Ahh, now I see what you meant.

Nvidia Mac Drivers aren't like Windows ones.

You can't mix & match with different OS's. So would be very hard to tell if any differences are from OS , OpenGl/CL Framework, or Nvidia Web package. Any time you change more then 1 thing, you never get real answer.

The benchmarks were done with the default 10.8.2 drivers (295) whereas there are newer drivers available from Nvidia (304). It would be interesting to know what if any differences there are in performance as it's possible to change just that one factor.

Driver change

I considered the driver update but seeing as how the cards were working flawlessly I decided to not push anything yet. Honestly, I wanted to see if you could install 10.8.2 and run any card out of the box with those drivers (which we accomplished). As many have said before the main caveat with PC off-the-shelf GPUs is the lack of PCI data which poses some issues when using red rockets and additional cards.

Our systems both show "error loading PCI information" with the GTX570s so I can't tell what is happening in those additional slots.

I think I'll go ahead and install the 304 drivers and see if there is a performance bump. After that I'll bump it up to 16GB RAM and see if I can get 24FPS out of 08 blur nodes for each card. After that I'm going to test some HDR footage and 5K FF 3:1 with an additional Rocket and see where it starts to break down.

I still feel the GTX660ti 3GB has a lot of value. It's low wattage and much cheaper than finding a 2.5GB 570. I've seen some rough comparisons and it seems to compete with the 480/570 and I feel would surpass them in Adobe apps due to the additional memory. I think for $325 the FTW edition could be the best single GPU option for ML users.

Thoughts?

Update

I noticed that when using the GTX570 with your GT120 I couldn't pull up any PCI info, so it seems if any PCI card with an improper EFI is installed then it knocks out that tab in system profiler.

Update:

- I tried installing 16GB and saw no measurable difference with Davinci. Maybe 1/4 FPS improvement but not much. Probably more improvement in Adobe apps.

- Swapped the single Red Rocket into an 8X slot and ditched the GT120. I was able to get Full quality realtime 5K off the internal SW RAID vs 1/2 debayer playback in the 4X slot. Render differences were smaller though (a couple FPS slower in 4X slot).

- With two rockets my speed jumped from 23-25FPS to 40-44FPS out of Redcine. Can't test in Davinci since I'm limited to one rocket in Lite version.

Our EFI cards fix the PCI info section, allowing you to get accurate info.

If paid, would you be able to flash someone's card for them? I have 2 EVGA 570 GTX HD Superclocked cards as I intend to run SLI on the Windows side, and I'd like at least one card to be capable of displaying the boot screen for selection of boot drives. My ability to switch back to OS X will be gone once I patch the MBR for the sake if ACHI. I sent a message on eBay as I figured it more appropriate to ask there, and I looked for a contact link on your website to no avail.

Radeon HD 7950

Sapphire pictured a new video card for mac pro workstations. The HD 7950. The price range between 400€ - 500€.

I have 10.6.8, need to update to 10.7.4?

If you call Apple, they will send you a Lion link to iTunes (in 24-48 hours), but they "think" it's the last version, 10.7.5

Will 10.7.5 work with the GTX570, which I bought?

If not, where can you get 10.7.4?

GTX 570 will work in 10.7.5

Good to know, thanks for the reply!
I guess the earlier info in the thread (10.7.4) is dated.

Nvidia drivers are for 10.7.5?

Do you have the 570?

I don't have one, I just did a quick google search and saw that some people reported it working.

If you have a MP 5,1 as indicated in your signature, why would you want to go through all the trouble dealing with the Lion when you can upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 directly? NVIDIA's built-in drivers are universal which means they support most of their GPUs back to their GTX 2xx series. Better yet, the 10.8.3 drivers support PCIe 2.0 link speed (5.0 GT/s) in OS X for MP 4,1 and later models. You need to read the first post of the sticky FAQ thread to learn more about the NVIDIA GPUs. I have a GTX570 PC card, and it runs fine in OS X 10.8.3 as well as in 10.7.5.

thanks xcode, I never saw the FAQ thread- I thought this was the definitive GTX 570 thread.

And since this thread gives no indication of Mountain Lion working, I thought I needed Lion- silly me...

So yes, ML it is. Thanks for the clarification!

I took the same route as XCodeSyn and skipped Lion all together. By the time ML was on 10.8.2 it was just too easy to run the GTX cards that I had to take advantage and leave 10.6.8. All of our machines now run 570's as the stock card before jumping into 680's for the "hard work" machines. They are literally plug and play. I use a GT120 for initial setup and diagnostics because it allows me to see the displays during install. Love where Apple has taken Nvidia support.

So this post is still correct (with the exception of Lion)?

Correct.

1) Install Lion.
2) Update to 10.7.4.
3) Install the drivers from here.
4) Install the GTX 570.

At that point, everything should work fine.

Edit: To be absolutely clear, you'll need to use your original card for steps 1-3, the GTX 570 will only work once those steps have been completed.

Use the latest drivers from Nvidia???
270.00.00f06 ?

If you upgrade to Mountain Lion and bump it all the way up to 10.8.3, you'll have the most recent nVidia drivers available. nVidia has yet to release 10.8.3-specific downloadable drivers. I have a funny feeling they're not going to, either.

For what it's worth, what's currently in 10.8.3 is 304.10.65f03. I have one of Dave's GTX570s in my Mac Pro and it works fine with the built-in 10.8.3 drivers.

Asgorath- I read the FAQ- thanks for putting everything up top and keeping it updated- much appreciated!

I upgraded to 10.8.3, will install the card tomorrow with stock drivers.

Thanks Jason, also.

Hey guys, back again.

Installed 10.8.3 and the 570, which shows CUDA under System Pref.

I'm on Premiere Pro CS5 (CS6 after I get this sorted out).

In P Pro, I get MPE Software only- how do I get MPE?

thanks

You need to add the name of the card to the supported cards list. Someone who's done this can probably give you exact instructions.

Hopefully you're actually using PPro CS5.5 and not CS5. Either way, it's done one of two ways:
  • Delete the cuda_supported_cards.txt file
  • Edit the cuda_supported_cards.txt file and add GeForce GTX 570 to it.

That file is found in:

Code:
$ pwd
/Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5/Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5.app/Contents

If you're using CS5, adjust the directory names accordingly.
