Forgive me fit being new, but what is Kepler?

I also don't see why there is even a Mac edition card if any card will work?

The difference is "officially supported with a warranty" and "just happens to work". Many people want the official support, so that they can call up EVGA and get help or get a replacement card if things go wrong etc. You aren't going to get that with a non-EFI card. I mean, the folks on this forum and others will try and help you make it work if things go wrong, but that's a whole different realm than official support from the manufacturer.

I'd rather go with supported.

Does it matter what company I choose if I want it go be supported? I listed EVGA above and Gigabyte.

Will these companies support the card even if I song buy the Mac Edition.

Is the 7970 the most recent supported card?

there are only two officially supported cards:
Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition
EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition

If you buy a Normal\PC EVGA GTX 680 and call EVGA For software support on a mac, they wont be able to help you. However if you have a hardware issue (graphic corruption for example) and it does it on your mac and you test on a PC and it also has corruption, then they should replace the card since it's clearly a hardware issue with the card.

With the GTX770 are there any kind of power issues? Debating on whether to go for a GTX670 or 770 in a MP 4.1

Are any of the cards 6 + 6? I had a look and the ones I saw were 6 + 8.

May be MacVidCards can chip in on this as he has built EFI ones.

I will share a secret, I have a 2008 3,1 with Dual 3.2 CPUs

It is the one the craps out the quickest when power demands exceed abilities

It is my new tester for power

I can run a 770 at full clocks on it with Valley and never does it fade or quit

I have 2 different 4,1/5,1 machines here that never choke on the same things the 3,1 will choke on, so it is the weakest in terms of power

If something can finish Valley in the 3,1 I consider it doable in later machines

The 480 and 580s I clocked down but I am leaving 770s as is

the GTX 770 is just a slightly higher clocked GTX 680, however it has a TDP of 230watts, so you're right it would be 6pin + 8pin.

I want to double check the information I read from this thread is correct.

Any graphics card, whether its PC only or Mac Supported will work in a Mac Pro without issues? The only things different is the tech support/warranty if it's a non-Mac supported card.

Sounds about right?

NO @marker227!!! Be aware of the power supply trol!
Only when powered externally you are safe with all cards, but please check references fot the driver(s) issues and so.

Chose your PC card carefully and you'll have a bunch of fun with it!

Can confirm the EVGA GTX670 FTW 4GB with onboard PS works great in Mac Pro 3,1 / Bootcamp Win8 Pro X64

GL & Cheers!

As long as I don't exceed the power rating, any card will work?

(Updat) You know EVGA has a 680 Mac Edition. Why would one get a 670? It's a lower card.

What about the 770?

Cheaper, and the 670 is a 6pin + 6pin even with 4Gb. The 680 Mac is only 2Gb RAM. Most of the 680's are 6pin + 8pin, although a lot of people have found that will work fine with a 6pin to 8pin adaptor.

Zotac are the only 6pin + 6pin that I found and they are hard to find now. I had the last one from where I bought mine and they no longer sell them.

I realize it's cheaper and it's double the GB, but from what I understand gaming will never use all of the 4GB's.

If cost is not an issue, I'd like to upgrade to the most powerful card on the market. I want to again, future proof myself for some years.

Just by searching online, I found this link. Of course, I don't think I'd buy the Mac Edition if I can run the PC Version just fine. Food for thought.

I realize more GB is good to have. I have a 5870 1GZb and it does just fine on BF3 on high settings. I still don't understand why a 670 is a better choice than a 770 if its an older card.... Can someone enlighten me?

I think people just recommend it because it is 6+6 pin, whereas the 770 is 6+8 pin. A lot of people are comfortable with 6+8 pin provided the TDP is low enough, but likewise a lot of people prefer to stick with 6+6 pin for convenience or to stay within the spec.

One thing I don't understand is why the 680 is holding its price at or above the 770, which is faster and often less expensive. Everyone has been predicting a big price drop for the 600 line, but it hasn't arrived yet.
