I'm probably going over old ground and have I searched the forum but not found the specific answer or found it confusing.

I have a 4.1 Mac Pro in which I want to install a Gainward GTX 580. From my reading this appears to require both a 6 pin and 8 pin power line. So far so clear.

However when I look at my card it appears to have two 6 pin sockets. So im checking if that is the case or is the gap between the two sockets the space for an 8 pin power line?

I have included a pic of the card just in case i'm missing the totally obvious.

I bought the Mac Pro used and it currently doesn't have any PCI-E power lines so would be buying whatever cabling I need for this mission.

Any help and guidance will be most appreciated.

580 wont work on internal power, you would have to power the card with an external Power Supply.
You need a card that is 6pin + 6pin max to use internal power on the Logicboard.
You can buy the power cables on Ebay, or if you live near Toronto I have a pair.

That definitely looks like 2 6-pin connectors, are you sure it's a 580 and not a 570 or something?

Doh! So long since I bought the card I forgot it actually is a 570. Thanks for the help. ;) And a can of air will be giving it the once over soon. :D

They look like two 6-pin connectors to me.

These are the cables you'll need:

Also, get some compressed air and blow all that crap out of there. ;)

Im in the UK so need to order my cables from elsewhere. Would either of these be the correct cables?

And I would need x2 of these?

GTX 580 crashing constantly

Hallo. I recently purchased a GTX 580 from Macvidcards. Everything seems fine unless I try to run the card in Cuda mode under Sorenson Squeeze or any other program that supports cuda where the card switches off and computer stalls...Tried all the patching from netkas but with no luck. Tried different combinations of Cuda and Nvidia drivers, no luck. I'm on OSX 10.7.5 relatively fresh install..Any help here would be mnore than welcome..

Regards

how are you powering the card? does this only happen with CUDA, have you played games\benchmark to stress the card?

if you can game\benchmark\stress the card without issue then it's something with CUDA.

if it crashes with CUDA\Benchmarks\Stress Testing then it could be a problem with the card\Power Supply.

Turns out he has a 3,1 and the usual 3,1 and reference 580/570 issue, fan doesn't spin if in bottom slot.

Move up a slot and fixed.

Is that just a Lion issue? My wife & I each have a MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr in slot 1 of our 3,1 Mac Pros running 10.8.4 & they are fine. The only problem that I had was that a GT120 in slot 2 is so close that it obstructed on of the fans causing a lot of extra noise. Moving the GT120 to slot 3 cured the noise.

The issue is only with REFERENCE GTX570 & GTX580.

Pretty sure it's in Asgorath's thread at top of board.

Those cards in a 3,1 will have fan do little fits and starts but never really get spinning. Card overheats shortly thereafter.

Later revisions of card don't have issue.

I tried reading all the posts, but what is the overall consensus with what GPU is currently the most powerful?

I was thinking of buying a 680 Mac edition, but was reading the 660 might be overall better and you can just drop the card in without flashing.

680 Mac Edition is the most powerful card with an EFI available. Any of the other 6-series cards from NVIDIA should just work with Mountain Lion.

Forgive me fit being new, but what is Kepler?

I also don't see why there is even a Mac edition card if any card will work?
