I am very interested to see some performance numbers for 4k 10 bit hevc. The current macs leave a lot to be desired. I think they top out at around 30-60fps. Given nvidia's significant speed advantage, I am hoping Apple Silicon can speed this up a great deal. The info shown so far seems inconclusive.

This makes sense and what I suspected Would happen. Geekbench does not measure this. These apps take advantage of the acceleration hardware which does not exist on Intel chips.

Apple has been suspiciously coy about benchmarks because they dont want to tip thier hats ro the shock and awe that will happen when the Apple silicon workstation chips arrive.

Judging from the fan being silent, I’d say the stutters he experienced are probably from the lack of a bigger memory.

This is from a photographer in Australia. He got the device today and posted this on Weibo in Chinese. I guess I’ll translate a bit.

Exporting H.264 Sony 10 bit 422 footage with just one rec709 lut takes:

- 11 minutes and 30 seconds on his iMac Pro with Vega 56 and 128gigs of ram.
- 10 minutes and 20 seconds on thenew MacBook Pro with 8gigs of ram took. Wow.

Thanks for the post! I do a lot of photography using a Canon 5d mkiv and Sony A73, and built a desktop this year to do my RAW processing and video. I won’t get into the build details unless interested, but it’s based upon an AMD Ryzen 3900.
I miss my Mac! My 2015 MBP just wasn’t up to the task, so I ordered the M1 MBP with 16GB / 1 TB last week so I can do my work away from home.

For what I use it for, it’s looking good (fingers crossed). Needed to upgrade anyway.

Gu posted one more weibo, and I'm blown away. He said he's gonna work on a review video now.
He edited the canon r6 H265 video on battery and it came up with 85% left, his own 16 inch macbook pro would have been left with 50-60% on a good day. And the new M1 chip Macbook Pro was dead silent. (I'm not gonna translate his metaphor tho...)
BUT there has been some compatibility or optimization issues. During his workflow, the computer was not able to play sounds, and had a forced quit. Airdrop doesnt seem to work.
Editing wise, when he had a extended timeline, he definately feel a bit stuttering happening. But once again, it is the 13 inch base model.

I think the Apple Silicon still new. Give it some times to become perfect

I know this thread title is about FCPX but I'm curious about Premiere and After Effects (i know rosetta) but just wondering if those are usable.

Man, what a disappointment. Barely faster than the 2014.
Huh? Disappointed that they were roughly 30% faster on a machine that costs $1000 and has a 15 hour battery.

This is not really a great test as its just a single clip export. There is no complex effects or transitions which I'd guess is where we are really going to see the M1 is going to shine.

The MacBook Pro in 2014 STARTED at $2000 and has around the same processing power as the 10th gen i5 that is powering the 2020 intel MacBook Pro 13 (which is still $500 more).

Nothing close to an Apples to Apples test.

- They are running tests via live stream

Final Cut Stuff at around 40mins ... The Air is damn impressive considering it's completely fanless despite not quite as fast as the 16 inch MBP.

Are you saying 4k 60 video is faster to work with than a 1080p 60 video?

No he is saying the M1 has 4 big cores to do hard work and 4 little ones for light work. 1080p 60 video might be considered light so the little cores work on it. Hence not much of a speed difference compared to the 2014 MBP. 4K 60 is harder so the big cores take that task on and make light work of it where the 2014 MBP would really struggle more.
