For me it’s 100% a consumption device. My MacBook does all the heavy lifting. And I’m thinking of getting a ProMax next time I upgrade my iPhone. With the bigger screen size do I really need another similar device that’s only a few inches bigger?

Kudos to all the creatives and people who use iPad as their main device—the new M4 iPP is a great machine. But I’m thinking of maybe simplifying my ecosystem and getting rid of this thing, that took me twice as long to type these paragraphs on as it would have on my Mac, lol.

i feel i enjoy my mac for a lot of things and i've felt like you. but i recently got a mini and it does actually help because i know i use my mac mainly for consumption. reading articles and watching youtube really. not even movies, just youtube, unless it's on a flight and i found a mini is perfect for that.

For most people, iPad is not something they need, but more on they want. It’s luxurious item that made its users more comfortable in doing stuff. So yes, if you talk about needs, most of us (including me and people surrounding me) can still alive and productive without iPad.

Yep just overpriced bigger iPhones really, but I’ve always had one as well as a Mac.
Hard to justify now though when a 11” M4 256gb with keyboard is $2000AUD with edu, same as a
15” M2 MacBook Air 16/1TB going out the door sales on now.
Probs still get the iPad though lol

I have a 15 ProMax, iPad M4 13", iMac and the iPad is by far my most used device. It does not replace my desktop but I find my M3 iMac uncomfortable in my lap, sitting in my Lazyboy! If I could only have one, it would be my iPad. No way I could use the iPhone to replace my iPad.

Hi Makisupa Policeman,

Well, you're not alone in your sentiments...after listening to my sweetie rave about her iPad at the time I finally jumped in with a 12.9" Gen 2 Pro some years ago. The poor thing has sat around unused (and has been "up for grabs, free!" with my nieces and nephews for their kids, no takers! Haw!), using a touch screen and dealing with the restrictions of iPadOS I've been quite happy getting my computing done on my (now-aging) 2019 i9 iMac.

In fact, I'm so nonplussed about swipey things I've been giving serious thought to ditching my iPhone 8 Plus and just going back to a flip phone with real buttons...seriously. Truth is, after truly trying to embrace and enjoy the swipey life I can honestly say that every cent I've ever paid for any iOS or iPadOS app has turned out to be money wasted. Same goes for my AppleWatch...I'll be getting a wind-up with a seconds hand when it's time to go.

Folks that love their iDevices, more power to 'em...done that, not for me.

My 2¢, :)

I have an iPhone 14 Plus and it feels tiny compared to my new iPad Pro 11”.

I now leave it in the kitchen and solely use my iPad for a better experience all round.

ipad is glorious for reading news, my YouTube premium and other stuff.

I recently made the decision to remove YouTube and any consumption apps from my phone and only let them live on my iPad. It’s a phenomenal device but less convenient to just sit and scroll or whatever. It’s cut my screen time way down.

My phone is for communication, email, weather, banking.

My iPad is for fun, but it’s not always on me.

My MacBook is for work.

I feel like this gives the iPad some uniqueness over just being a larger phone. It has apps that I won’t allow on my phone, and that means it has it’s own purpose.

All apple devices, and this goes with just about everything in life period, gets boring. The honeymoon phase quickly dissipates in a short period of time and at the end it was money not well spent. Upgrading only makes sense if your device no longer works or struggles to. People that go from M1 to M2 or M3 is charity giving to a trillion dollar company with no tax deductions!

I have had iPads since the original, mostly under used. I just bought a new house with a beautiful wooded fenced in back yard for my dog. I really enjoy sitting on my patio, watching nature and using my M4 11” iPad Pro on my lap. The bright new OLED screen is perfect for this and if the dog would stop barking at the deer all would be good.

Sure happy with mine after several years, pretty long for just a honeymoon. And everything in life gets boring? I'm into my eighth decade and I couldn't disagree more.

It's up to you, but this is an example of what you're calling "only a few inches bigger":

‘The swipey life’…🤣 love that! I’m the opposite really, I’m a tech nerd. If it computes, I want, no, need it 🤓.

I just find that I use my iPhone for the majority. Take iPad traveling ? Most times it goes unused. iPhone? Use all the time.

At home? iPhone. Read books? iPhone. (At least 100 books a year read). If not tv or computer then iPhone for short videos. It’s always in pocket. iPad is charging somewhere. Not worth the effort to go get it.

Only when I’m specifically wanting to play an iPad game or read some comics from way back when then time to grab iPad.

Practice young Padawan, practice. An Apple Store employee said with a couple of months of daily practice one can achieve a level of proficiency equivalent to using an external keyboard.
Some tech bloggers have reported typing speeds of 80, 90 and even 100 wpm with the software keyboard.

I see people speed typing on their phones and am amazed. But I'm old ...

I feel like ipad is a luxury for most people tbh. I don’t need it and my life would be fine without it, but I enjoy using it because of the compromise of screen size and portability for reading, journaling and youtube. I prefer using it when I am on the bed especially. My phone is when I am on the go, and my macbook is for work and other heavy tasks. I wish there are more games that can utilize the m chip made for the ipad tbh, so that I can just use my ipad to play games instead of my macbook.
