I also don’t really need an iPad pro, but i want one because I really enjoy using it.

I don’t want a MacBook (pro) as for me it’s just another boring laptop. For content consumption and private use, I find the iPad better suits my needs and is more fun to use because of the touch and modularity, and it functions well as a work companion device.

When it comes to regular computers, I prefer desktops Like the iMac

I think Apple needs to differentiate the Pro models from the regular ones, maybe with dual booting/multiple accounts etc. As much as I love my iPad Pro and even dock it with TB3 Dock, display etc and use Stage Manager, it often frustrates me when simple jobs like formatting a disk can’t be done, on a Pro device this is unacceptable.

Apple has a device that could redefine computing and it appears it intentionally cripples it to protect Macbook sales.

I hope it wont alway be a “what if“ device.

For me it’s 100% a consumption device. My MacBook does all the heavy lifting. And I’m thinking of getting a ProMax next time I upgrade my iPhone. With the bigger screen size do I really need another similar device that’s only a few inches bigger?

Kudos to all the creatives and people who use iPad as their main device—the new M4 iPP is a great machine. But I’m thinking of maybe simplifying my ecosystem and getting rid of this thing, that took me twice as long to type these paragraphs on as it would have on my Mac, lol.
I’m thinking the same thing, having my next iPhone be a Pro Max. I may even go as far as removing my MacBook from my ecosystem at that point. I regularly use a bluetooth keyboard (and occasionally mouse) with my iPhone. It does everything and sometimes more than what I do with my MacBook. The mouse isn't required but makes working with spreadsheets and text editing a lot easier and faster.

The Mac unfortunately can't use Fitness or Journal apps (fingers crossed they're announced at WWDC). Both apps I regularly use with my iPhone.

My iPhone is always with me, and my keyboard is usually with me in my bag - that my MacBook won't fit in. The only thing that would perfect this set up for me is external display/stage manager support on the iPhone. We already know it's possible with a jailbroken iPhone. I just don't see it officially happening anytime soon, unfortunately.

Of course, I'll probably end up eating my words and eventually have another iPad again soon anyway.

It’s great we having options to chose from, except for small iPhones…

If you don’t find a use for iPads don’t get one, but I really like the iPad Mini 6, it fits perfectly between my laptop/desktop and my iPhone for sofa surfing, media consumption, reading and basic daily usage.

I go through the no iPad cycle on a regular basis. The only time I really need it is for annotation and notes for when I'm on holiday. I could take a notebook and pens and just lose the iPad to be honest.

But here it is.

I hated my 12.9 iPad for a long time because it was a powerful but restricted device due to the OS. I preferred to use a laptop when moving, so the iPad was a costly content consumption device. That has changed.

I took the time to understand it and work with it. It's not perfect by any means, but it now does everything I would typically use a laptop for when on the move. Any other time, I am at my desk at home and have the Mac Studio, and the iPad sits on a stand. It is used for tasks that I don't want to see on my desktop, and that causes distraction from what I am currently working on.

It's still used for watching things and general browsing, but it is so much more now. Before, I also had a laptop to compensate, but now I don't—just a Mac Studio and an iPad. My iPhone is used as a phone (to speak to people), a camera, and nothing more.

It took me many years to accept the iPad for what it is and find a way to work with it, but I'm glad I now have; it's justified itself both in use and cost.

I see people speed typing on their phones and am amazed. But I'm old ...
I’m faster on the phone than when I put my iPad in landscape and try the keyboard. It’s much easier to move my thumbs quickly across the tiny surface, than to correct the multiple missed keystrokes that happen because of glancing blows or because I tapped two keys too rapidly.

But I’m still far faster on a physical keyboard than in my phone.

For me it is all about screen real estate! My 15PM is simply too small to do what I love on the Internet! After years of using the on screen keyboard, I am quite fast and accurate. My speed and accuracy on the iPhone keyboard depends a lot on the spell checker! :p

Do you not use the Magic Keyboard then?

I struggle with the balance. If I could achieve it, my ideal state would be an iPad and a desktop (Studio most likely). Ditch the iPhone, the Watch, the MBPro. It will probably never happen.

I really enjoy the 12.9” for functionality but it annoys me for portability/one-handed use. So for the third time I’ll probably return to the 11” size… but this time I’ll have used the 12.9” model for about two years rather than the handful of months my first shot at it lasted. Remarkable how much habit plays into these things… too bad Costco doesn’t sell cellular versions - the 90 day return policy would be excellent.

In the beginning, I also thought it's only an impulsive purchase for checking news and occasional entertainment. But over time, the iPad as taken on an organizing role that's dramatically improved my life. I really don't want to lug around an ungainly laptop nor sit at a desk in front of a computer. iPhone display is much too small.

Instead, easy and portable access to documents, files, contacts, calendar appointments, notes, books, PDFs, manuals, outside weather conditions, photos, camera, online investment accounts, shopping, etc. And with Google Voice, a VOIP phone. And that's not counting some music and videos.

It's really become an indispensable device that goes everywhere I go.

I've felt the same way ever since the Apple Silicon Macbooks came out.

It feels like Apple has perfected the concept of the laptop. These machines are so capable, so slim and light, with such great battery life that I'd rather just carry around a Macbook than an iPad.

iPadOS is too limited in what it can do. It's needlessly subject to the app store walled garden. Multitasking is wonky and awkward. Basically anything I might want to do on an iPad I can do on my phone, and for anything that I need a bigger screen for, the Macbook it is.

Sounds like you’ve achieved my ideal state, nearly. I’m just waffling on the 11” vs 13” and waiting for the Studio to offer Thunderbolt 5.

The iPhone has other tasks as well for me: notes and text messages and Wallet, etc. Little things that are simple when the device resides in your pocket but more of a pain point if you have to carry it separately. So I’ll probably have to keep it…

I just got a 10th gen ipad a few weeks ago after not having one for many years. I found what I'm using it most for is as a compliment to my Macbook. It's so easy just to stand it up right to the side of my Macbook and move my curse over to it to control it (along with using the keyboard on the mac to type on it). Using that feature way more than I thought I would because it didn't exist last time I had an iPad.

Glad you posted this info. I wasn't aware of this feature.

I'm replacing mine with an e ink tablet

Still use the ipad sporadically for procreate and comics ...but yeah truth be told I tried hard to force myself but never could get into it and the whole workflow thingie. I prolly use it 4h per month. Worst investment ever lol

It doesn't feel good for writing . It has bad battery. It doesn't feel rly good for reading (compared to e ink that is) . It is severely limited in so many ways. Most creative stuff apart from drawing (video editing , photo editing , music ) I'd rather do on my Mac .

Weird I just went from a Remarkable 2 to an iPad Mini6. The Remarkable 2 is an amazing device for what it does but suddenly when I put a paperlike screen protector on a Mini 6, it does pretty much the same for note taking and there is a whole lot more on an iPad mini: Safari, ToDo lists, Netflix, Spotify etc etc...

It does a lot and yet it doesn't do much, at least in my case . Jack of all trades and master of none. The paper like ****s text clarity sadly last I check and eats pencil tips like a 1k horses car drinks gasoline . And don't get me started on battery
