For me it’s 100% a consumption device. My MacBook does all the heavy lifting. And I’m thinking of getting a ProMax next time I upgrade my iPhone. With the bigger screen size do I really need another similar device that’s only a few inches bigger?

Kudos to all the creatives and people who use iPad as their main device—the new M4 iPP is a great machine. But I’m thinking of maybe simplifying my ecosystem and getting rid of this thing, that took me twice as long to type these paragraphs on as it would have on my Mac, lol.
I'm in a somewhat similar boat. I'm trying to simplify the Apple side of my ecosystem. I have often found that an iPad mini makes an 9.7-11.1-inch iPad redundant; plus I find myself wanting to use/take it in/to many more places than I would said 9.7-11.1-inch iPad. I enjoyed a 12.9-inch iPad Pro and love the idea of a 12.9/13-inch iPad Air. But, if I'm being honest, a 13-inch or 14-inch MacBook Pro will do everything I wanted that large of an iPad to do, but better.

Suffice it to say that I've owned at least one of every model of iPad over the years. But, nowadays, I really have no justification for anything that isn't the iPad mini.

iphone 4 and originall ipad mini worked well for me for years till I upgraded to 7 Plus. I replaced my iPad Mini after 809 years with an M1 iPad Pro and upgraded my iPhone to 13 PM. 12.9 iPad Pro is my go to device on the road and at my desk. iPad Pro can be a consumption device or an excellent test bed for my work. I do code reviews, run tests, and also connect to my Linux workstation or Mac as needed.
I dont use my 13 PM unless I am on the road with out my ipad Pro. Between Apple Watch S6 and iPad Pro, iphone barely gets any use.

Yep just overpriced bigger iPhones really, but I’ve always had one as well as a Mac.
Hard to justify now though when a 11” M4 256gb with keyboard is $2000AUD with edu, same as a
15” M2 MacBook Air 16/1TB going out the door sales on now.
Probs still get the iPad though lol
This is why Apple needs to upgrade the OS and let it run Mac Apps. And people can say oh it doesn’t work that way. It’s the same base code they just need to spend a little money developing it out. It makes zero sense having an M4 in an iPad Pro that runs iPadOS as is now. And we have hoped for years Timmy would allow us to actually use these things. They’re a joke all based on the OS!

I have a 2021 16" M1 MacBook Pro, so I don't need my 2021 12.9" M1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, but I sure do like them. I bought the iPP combination to replace my 2015 MBP, found that it wasn't a replacement for my needs, and bought the 16" MBP. I use the MBP as a backup to my work-issued Windows laptop for Adobe CC, as well as for Logic Pro and various photo-editing apps, and I prefer macOS for most things. However, I use my iPP more often, for watching movies and TV shows while I'm on the treadmill, responding to texts and email, browsing the Web, reading, drawing in ProCreate, and now playing with Logic Pro for iPad. If I had it to do over, I might skip the MKB because of the price, but it's nice to have. I also have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, which I use for phone calls, taking pictures, Apple Maps, Apple Music, and anything else I need to do when I'm on the go. So, for me, it's an ideal combination of devices. My wife, on the other hand, uses her iPhone 15 Pro Max for almost everything. She uses her iMac only when she needs a bigger screen or when writing documents in Word, and she doesn't use her 2017 standard iPad anymore and says she doesn't want a new one.

It's really more than just a few inches from an area standpoint. It's a huge difference. I don't see the point. Obviously people have been buying iPads for years and I think I've owned four. *You* may not need an iPad but.....but that's all.

I’m honestly not much of a creative or producer of things but I love my iPad Pro, it’s awesome for consuming content. Do I need it? Probably not really, but I do really like it and I can afford it so why not.
This is my dilemma. My iPad use is completely covered by an iPad mini 6 but I really like the iPad Pro but it is such overkill for anything that I would use it for. I keep putting an 11" in my cart at the online Apple store but even the minimal configuration with Apple Pencil Pro, Smart Folio, and Magic Keyboard is $1706. And I would much prefer not to get the binned M4 so that puts the price at $2306. I can afford either configuration but I can't convince myself to hit the buy button. It is just too much money for what I can use an iPad for. I could remove the Magic Keyboard since I wouldn't use it much but that only helps a little.

For me, the iPad is definitely a "nice to have", but not a "need to have". Whereas, I need my MBA for productivity apps and other tasks. That said, I am pretty happy with my iPad 10 for casual computing, reading, and content consumption. Recently, I took it on a 2 week vacation, and it was great. It also makes a nice secondary screen to work in conjunction with the MBA.

I think the iPad 10 is a heck of a good deal right now at $349, and I am sure there will be sales at $299 before long. It will probably get a processor bump in the Fall, and will keep chugging along.

I broke my iPad Pro and have not and don't intend to replace it, I have a M2 Max Mac book and iPhone 15 pro and that will do. I can't justify the $1000 + cost of replacement.
You might be able to get a used one for a lot cheaper. I bought an iPad Mini on Ebay, which runs the latest iOS, for 75 USD.

No brainer for me . With gift cards from friends, family and Apple, I was able to purchase an 11” 256GB cellular M4 iPad Pro with Apple folio for around $400. I’m coming from a 2018 M1 iPad Pro and I love my new OLED iPad Pro!! It’s a want, not a need and I’m ok with that .

I’m in the all-in on iPad camp again now that I upgraded with the MK and Pencil. I still love my M3 MBA and it’s still necessary, but I grab my iPad first all day everyday. It’s amazing what good hardware does.

Upgraded MY m2 11 to a m4 11 just cause I wanted it, I have been iPad only since the iPad Air 4, between the phone and iPad I am all covered.

I do a lot of Affinity work on it, some consumption but mostly my work on it. Did I need the M4? Probably not, but it was a nice upgrade for me (wouldn't recommend to upgrade from any ipad if you have an iPad Air 4 or above if all you do is media consumption).
Wondering if we will ever see a little step forward on iPadOS, but I am already pretty happy as it is.

The new workflow took time to get into and adapt, but since going iPad only I never looked back and pretty satisfied.

Wow, this blew up a bit!

I’m not throwing shade at the iPad fwiw.

It’s great for what it is. I like mine a lot. I just don’t use it enough, to the point where I’m questioning the justification for owning it. But I’m not positive what I will end up doing in the end.

A few inches bigger? iPad is quite a bit bigger than an iPhone.

Ultimately, this is why I divested myself of my M1 MBA and made the full transition to my iPad Pro as my primary computer.

Different devices for different people - that's why Apple makes both.

Correct. I’m finally at a stage where I can excise the last vestiges of laptops from my life. I have always detested them. They’re a small and expensive version of a desktop. An iPad, however is a different beast entirely… and that’s why it will become my main travel computer and pretty much has been for years. My MBPro is a portable desktop that is wasted in its present role. And your view and approach can, and probably should, be different.

That said, I’d still leap at a reborn 12” MacBook…

Of my trinity of devices (laptop, iPad, phone), my iPad has always been the least vital and I expect that it always will be. Still incredibly useful and I would hate to not have it, but the other devices would be much harder to live without. The iPad is a really great supplement to the other devices.
