Can you edit vertical videos on it? Why is the UI designed for 16x9? The entire internet/social media is vertical or square video, and that’s presumably what most people will be using this for. Anybody doing 16x9 video will just use a Mac. Why would they do that??

There’s an obvious reason TV’s, computer screens and movie theatres are all horizontally oriented: the position of our eyes.

Therefore, anybody producing vertical videos should be banned from the internet for life.

Valid points! But I rather pay One Time Fee for a photo/video editor and not have to worry about paying monthly or yearly.

The subscription model denotes its intended for the pro-consumer

What all of you folks need to understand is that high one-time prices for software are absolutely uncommon on the iPad, and for that reason alone, probably wouldn't catch on with iPad users. Hence whether you like them or not, for developers subscriptions are the only viable way to monetize their efforts.

iMovie on iPhone ‹ Finalcut on iPad ‹ Finalcut Pro on Mac.

For casual Youtube videos I will stick with Lumafusion.

For me the question is should I buy an iPad Pro for FCP and Logic? I have a Mac Mini that I work on now but would like a mobile device to supplement my workflow. An iPad is pretty close to meeting my needs. However, it’s just now there yet. I need XCode, or at least a better version of Playground. I also need FCP and Logic. I could probably get away with Logic Pro on iPad, but FCP lacks external storage and the ability to work on projects started on Mac. These are deal breakers for me. I love my iPad Air and would love to be able to use an iPad for my work, but I don’t think it’s there just yet. It’s getting closer, but it’s just not there yet.

The problem is that she's basically just marketing products to her audience and not really telling the truth about them, especially their flaws. She spins every product to be amazing, life changing, fantastic & must-have. Which is exactly what the marketing people need her to say in return for the early access they give her to products/software.

She's just a marketing mouthpiece these days.
I agree. For a chuckle take a look at her recent "interview" with Spotify's Daniel Ek. You will also likely be chuckling at Ek as well.

They should have offered full and subscription. What happens when they see the subscription model is lucrative and no one minds because there’s no other other and the same thing happens to the desktop version

Which is, of course, her business model.
Only few channels grow big by criticising things.

Right, but essentially misinforming people isn't really a way to enhance your credibility.

I have no problems with praising good products, but there has to be a balance. All her videos follow the same template by a ridiculous unboxing performance (where its hardware) then providing all the info and buzzwords she's been asked to say then demo it in the most basic way possible to make it appealing to everyone.

She's obviously a very highly skilled video editor, but the only one of the top popular TechTubers to essentially gush over FCP on iPad when all her peers essentially told their audience what's good about it but more importantly what it's missing, the restrictions and talked through the current flaws, none of which she did aside from mentioning the inability to edit from external drives.

What makes you think you can't? They prominently note Auto Crop in its features so if it's anything like Auto Crop on FCP on the Mac, then yes you can.

Auto Crop
Intelligently adjust footage for vertical, square, and other aspect ratios so you can deliver your videos to multiple destinations with ease.

I’ve come to completely disregard the ’reviews’ of many content creators precisely because they’ve allowed themselves to become part of Apple’s PR machine, meaning all the viewer gets its hype and no critical evaluation of substance.
THIS. I (after a brief loss of reason) stopped watching these long ago. I would rather try things myself and if I like it, great, and if I don't control-alt-delete...

I disagree completely. What makes it totally offensive is that you never own anything and will keep paying forever.

If they (Apple) gave you the option of paying a minimum x number of monthly rates and then qualify for an unlimited license of the current version of the app, it would not be offensive. If you want/need the latest version you will have to keep the subscription active though - all that would be acceptable in my book and it would still maintain a constant cash income for Apple.

I don't think we ever own software if you read the license agreements - even for one-time purchases.😛

Sure. I think the truth is that long ago, when software was boxed and shipped on CDs, the developer would put in a certain amount of work and then ship it. Relatively speaking, software wasn't updated, upgraded and the developer never had to work on it after it shipped out. They would work on a 'new' version and users would have the option to buy if they wanted the features.

These days, with computers always being online we expect software to be updated/patched continuously which means the developer never stops working on it. There is background infrastructure to be maintained such as servers, hosting etc. (e.g. we can download software over and over from the developer site, and not have to reinstall on physical media or have to back it up ourselves).

Plus - nowadays, software is so full-featured, that making compelling reasons to update to V2.0, V3.0 etc. is near impossible. I mean, who needs a more powerful version of MS Word? A 20-year old copy would be good for 99% of people's needs.

In short, I hear you, and I don't disagree with you - I hate all the monthly subscriptions on my credit card bill. But it's not going to change.

To each their own but, personally, I think it's great that Apple isn't charging more than $5/month for something as powerful as these apps. What can be done with them is absolutely mind-blowing! I also love that FCP is now in the reach of people who couldn't afford the $300 purchase price. What I would have done as a kid to be able to get Logic Pro with my pocket money (allowance)!

Without support for external SSD editing, I won’t even try it. DaVinci, Lumafusion can do it both.

IMO, best thing about these hitting now is that obviously Apple did not think they could fit into up to 3 hours at WWDC. These certainly SEEM like something "new" that could have been revealed there and probably filled upwards of 20+ minutes with some "ooooh" and "ahhhhhh."

I recall them spending a good chunk of time during the AppleTV portion a few years ago to basically talk about the release of Amazon Prime. These apps seem much BIGGER than yet another streaming service.

What's coming at WWDC that moved Apple to go ahead and let these cats out of the bag only a few days before? (that's somewhat rhetorical, more so expressing anticipation instead of actually asking the question. If we don't know by now, we've been reading rumors wrong). Bring on the goodies! Show us something entirely NEW!
I thought about this also. I've been wondering if Adobe is planning on a more robust Premiere for iPad to be revealed like they did with PhotoShop? I'm not holding my breath though...

Ok good; but they still designed the UI with 16x9 video as the focus. Which I think is the wrong direction.

Check out RAW Power on the Mac App Store. It's developed by the old Aperture team and is essentially a newer version of Aperture. It also has an extension for the Photos.app to edit things directly there. It's a $39.99 one-time purchase.
Yes, I know about RAW Power which is the only place to really go but then I am going to have to use Photos and the organization stinks. Last time I tried to change a pile of image from JPEG to RAW as the front/main version of the image, it can only be done one at a time! One at a time! Like... seriously. In Aperture, you just select 1000 images and change the front photo to RAW or JPEG with one selection and click. And that is just one of the major show stopper issues I was having.

Love RAW Power but need some sort of DAM solution to actually replace Aperture libraries. Otherwise, it is difficult. I'd love some solutions to the issues but I don't know of any yet.

Sadly, Apple wants to keep their service sector growing, and they are not gonna do it by selling you and me a video editing app for $80 one time.

As for people saying “it’s only $5”, sure, it is. But rarely anyone has subscription for FCP alone. Therefore, they add up more and more.

Completely agree! VVS needs to be spoken about more. This presentation never gets old:

Not pointing out flaws is not lying. It’s about expectations. A YouTube reviewer has two goals to achieve if they want viewership—to give information and to entertain, but they aren’t obligated to hit any level of either. They just can’t give false information, of course. It’s similar to comedy news. John Oliver delivers news in a hilarious way—all as factual as possible I’m sure, but not anywhere near the whole story. That’s because people watch his show for his personality, not because they think he’s a hard hitting journalist. If anything, his reports should just spark interest and cause people to do actual research into a story before they make a judgment. Same with “reviewers” like iJustine.

Maybe it’s the term “reviewer” that we use for her that is throwing people off. What she does is historically relatively new and niche, so maybe there isn’t a better word for it yet. But maybe a more accurate label would be “tech personality or influencer”. I don’t think “marketing mouthpiece” would work because I don’t believe she’s being told what to say, nor being paid by companies. Because if she were, then she would need to divulge that. It’s pretty clear iJustine is an entertainer. I don’t think she’s deceiving anyone. And as long as she isn’t, I have no problem with people making a successful business for themselves.

Well there’s also 1 billion vertical devices in everyone’s hands. Feature Length movies or tv series, yes make them horizontal. But for everything else, people don’t rotate their phone . There’s a reason TikTok/Instagram Reels/YouTube shorts are what they are.

Editing software like CapCut are nativity in vertical and I think that’s what Apple should have done here also.
