By employing a vertical camera layout, Apple could bring Spatial Video recording to the base model iPhone 16, expanding the feature's overall availability to the entire iPhone 16 range.
That definitely seems to be the main reason for this design "reversal". The cameras need to be on the same plane in order for the 3D capture to work correctly. It's a shame they didn't do this for the 15.

I wonder if Apple will make it where the 16 models capture spacial video at 1080p and the 16 Pros will capture at 4K. I'm sure their longterm goal is for spacial video capture to be as good as it can possibly be on an iPhone since that is what most people will be capturing spacial videos with.

This is not even breaking news,
Y’all know what breaking news is? Loyal Apple Fans are officially returning the Apple Vision Pro and I don’t see MacRumos covering it, the hypocrisy of this site is at another level, they just don’t wanna hurt Apple Sheep‘s feelings……..

apparently you missed this article that MR put out...

People return things all the time. Heck we have had threads here about people returning iPhones like 12 times to get the perfect phone lol. This is not news. Now, if actual numbers get released that show the rate is remarkably higher than standard new product release, my guess is MR will be happy to share those.

But until then, we have people speculating and sometimes using derogatory terms. That's hardly news.

I'm glad that even though Jony Ive and many of the designers who worked under him are gone, Apple is still out here making bold design choices. I mean, moving from a diagonal camera setup to a vertical one? This is truly worthy of being called Apple's greatest iPhone yet. 🤪
It's not a marketing driven design change, it's a technical change to allow for spatial photography across the iPhone line. You can already to it on the Pro versions :) Though I guess one could argue that's still marketing...

Any chance we'll see the reintroduction of the technology to integrate cameras INTO the phone as opposed to sticking out like a wart?

I mean, come on! Can't even tap at my phone while it's flat on a surface without the damned thing wobbling. No I don't use a case. No I don't think it's a viable solution to the wobble.

It’s necessary to have the 2 camera’s lined up because of spatial video recording. If one camera is offset, it is incredibly harder to compute 3D spatial videos. The fact that they’re moving the orientation suggests Spatial Video recording is coming to the iPhone 16.
A motivation for Apple to discontinue the mini model, which necessitated the diagonal arrangement in the 13 mini originally.

Maybe that phrase itself is a some sort of commentary on our society.

Maybe the need to ascribe fandom to a corporation's product's customers is itself problematic.

Maybe the incessant war-thinking, the combat mentality, over these toys is not a good thing.

I wonder if the Pro models will change to a different camera layout... Upside down L? (I'm not good with Photoshop lol)

I'll be the first to say it. This looks DE-evolutionary! Prepare for the incoming "doom and gloom" stories: has the Apple lost its luster? Is the era of the iPhone over? Has Apple lost the crown on innovation? Who will take the spot formerly held by Apple? Etc....
