i plan to install Ubuntu or Lubuntu remix on my PB G4, at least with that I can somewhat use my machine more comfortably. Leopard was nice and I like the idea of the ones trying to get Snow Leopard to work, but I think it’s time for all of us to end MAC OS X on PowerPC and go Linux or BSD. That will be our future, unless Leopard can be reversed engineered.

I have decided to destroy my PB G4 out of anger due to this app.. I have come to the concliusion that PPC is worthless, garbage that just doesn't work anymore for internet. It was a waste of 80 dollars, but I will never go back to PPC ever again after this.

We've heard this all before. The definition of insanity is to repeat the same mistakes over and over again, and expect a different outcome. Here is what I did with a PowerPC G4 Powerbook this am on the internet:

I watched Leeds vs Fulham highlights in tenfivetube.

I casually surfed the web. Emphasis on casual. I went to low resource news sites like text.npr.org, and lite.cnn.com and read some news.

I listened to some music and watched some videos I downloaded from back in the day (2009).

I didn't expect my Powerbook G4 to be a Macbook or Macbook Pro. I treated my aging PowerPC machine with the respect and dignity it deserves. I enjoyed the nostalgic feeling I got hitting these old keys. Is it just me or do they just feel....better?

The bonus of destroying your PB G4 is that you won't ever have to come back here and experience the frustration you feel currently.

You're not alone on this one. I love the Aluminum PBG4 and MBP keyboard. It's much much better than the unibody keyboard to me. I wish I could find a 2007-2008 MBP with fixed GPU so I could run a much newer OS while keeping this classic design. My 2006 17" on Mavericks is overall pretty good though, but it would definitely be nice.

I've actually tried this on my G5 running Leopard, and I can't find any evidence it's working. "Safari can’t connect to the proxy server" isn't much of a useful error message but it's all I've got.
Sounds like you may have forgetten to "trust" the certificate, or have the wrong proxy setting. They should look like this:
squid-settings.png

It's also possible squid didn't start. Check activity monitor. If you are trying to connect a PPC to another "newer" machine running squid, you need to copy the certificate from that machine to your PPC, import it, trust it, then switch the proxy IP to that machines IP port 3128. PPC Leopard support is still experimental, but it is known to work for some. @Wowfunhappy and i both recommend going the route of using anothing machine to run squid, and keep the load off the PPC machine.

Glad you still find TFT useful. Just curious why you still use the older v3 when v5 has been out for awhile now with tons more features. Unless of course you just prefer v3 for its simplicity. ;)

Cheers

No, that is useful, actually! So (1) the installer worked, and (2) you've enabled the proxy in System Preferences, but the Mac can't connect to the proxy server. Most likely because the proxy isn't running for some reason.

What happens if you run this in the terminal? /Library/Squid/squid -d 0

This will (attempt to) start Squid manually, and output debug messages to the Terminal, which will hopefully give a clue as to why it didn't start in the first place.

how does one optimize iceweasel to speed up loading macrumors or eBay ? On my PB G4 titanium 1Ghz I get a lot of beach balls and it has an M2 sata SSD ? I know SSD doesn’t make web pages load faster, but what could I do to speed it up ?

I can answer this - version 5 seems much slower than 3 for some reason, since all G4’s can only view videos at 360 at least - maybe 480p, version 5 seems to drop a lot of frames. But under Lununtu remix, YouTube runs flawless.

...that's interesting, I was actually expecting Squid to crash (but hopefully with a useful error message). If it can be started manually, why didn't the LaunchAgent start it automatically?

What's the output of launchctl list | grep squid?

Running it did give me quite a few errors, despite running.
Thanks—those errors are normal and always show up, so nothing helpful there. But...

37587 - 0x1105e0.squid
37585 - 0x1103c0.squid

Now that makes it look like the LaunchAgent never got installed, somehow. Does the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.wowfunhappy.squid.plist exist?

But it's hard to argue with the results.
Yep, I'm just trying to make it so you don't have to manually start the proxy each time you reboot. It should run invisibly in the background and "just work".

@Wowfunhappy and i both recommend going the route of using anothing machine to run squid, and keep the load off the PPC machine.
I think I can see why, it's a very demanding piece of software, and not the most stable on PowePC Mac.

It does, and I wish I knew more about this stuff.

Yes I prefer the simplicity of v3 over the Flock based TFT, but that is just me. I use tenfivetube for one purpose only, and that's to watch 360p youtube, as long as v3 works as well as it does, I will keep using it.

Yeah, no L3 cache, it's the 1.67 ghz so yes, 7447a chip. Only thing that could make this faster would be a SSD, which I am now seriously contemplating. I might be crack smoking but the newest Tenfourfox FPR 31 feels...ever so slightly faster to me. Probably just my brain making it up.

🙄

Sigh. I really hate launchd sometimes.

Is there by any chance a message in the console (search for it) that reads:
launchctl: Dubious ownership on file (skipping): /Library/LaunchAgents/com.wowfunhappy.squid.plist

And, what is the output of: ls -l /Library/LaunchAgents/?

Edit: to be clear, that eyeroll was directed at launchd.

There are no errors even remotely related to launchctl in that mess, unfortunately. And as for output:

The thing of it is, this software, even when it's working, really seems to like crashing a lot, which is an absolute shame. Yes, I know, it was recommended that it be run on another device, but it was worth a shot. I just wish it crashed cleanly, and didn't try to take up as much of the cpu as possible.

The thing of it is, this software, even when it's working, really seems to like crashing a lot, which is an absolute shame.
Oh. Well that would explain why it wasn't running initially (although I would have thought the job would still show up in launchctl list).

@wicknix Was Squid actually stable for you in PPC Leopard? It was crashing for me on Intel Leopard too (and Intel Tiger), which is why I set the installer to require 10.6 minimum on Intel. But I figured MacPorts's Leopard toolchain was probably better tested on PPC, for obvious reasons.

The command does start it, and it works for a bit, but eventually it seems to get stuck while trying to max the cpu. It doesn't seem to get started automatically, and given the way it's unstable, that's probably a good thing at the moment.
