I used the speaker today for the first time in months.. Usually use the phone as a phone (my only phone, no land line).
Of course the call to apple the call was clear as could be...no garble....like taking your car in for a problem. There is something up.....enough info from us folks and it should get figured out.

I've done a few resets with no improvement. Hard reset, memory flush, network reset, power cycle.
Seems to be about 1 out of 3 calls are garbled for the listener ....no static/clicking sound on my end (yet).
Go to the Apple store. I’m sure you can trade for a crackling one.
I’ve seen a few people report about the garbled thing. On my crackling one the other people can hear me fine like normal.

yes. if we keep swapping them for a new one maybe we can end up with one that doesn't work at all....laughing,.

Is anyone else experiencing a crackling static noise from the earpiece during facetime or cellular calls? Strange thing is this noise happens randomly, roughly 1 in 3 calls. This is happening on iphone 8 plus.

Hey ive Contacted apple also they told me they dont have more reports
Of that issue.

Some more analysis - if you listen to the rhythm of the static noise, it’s aligned to the voice speaking which would suggest a mechanical vibration. Perhaps toggling the speaker separates the materials causing the vibration until they settle again and restart the vibration. If this is the case, it’s a design flaw and will need a manufacturing change to resolve. In which case we’ll need to return our handsets and wait. Which would suck.

That was my initial thought as well. But even with that observation, it could still be software - the preamp screwing up with some sounds in some situations. And that could be fixed via software.

Same issue on my 8. There's a pop when the call is answered then ongoing static during the call.

I got a direct confirmation from an Apple rep yesterday that it was a known issue, thought to be software and that it was being worked on, no ETA on the fix. This was in response to my launch day complaint follow up a few hours ago.

hey guys. is it the same if I recorded my voice with the voice memos and played it over the earphone? I can't put my sim in the iphone right now. Has anybody tried this way to confirm if this produces the same crackling sound?

I just did this on my ip plus and my wife's ip and ran it multiple times (5-6 times each) and could not hear any static or crackling.

That's a glimmer of hope what we got here.

Yep, first call noticed it right away, which led me to google the issue and here I am. Dang it.

Brand new phone unboxed today with factory fresh install (no migration of old user account done yet.)

Tested the voice memos several times with my faulty iPhone 8 and there's no trace of static nor crackling noises. I only got these during some audio facetime or cellular calls.

Thanks @JLeal It doesn't make sense to me. If it's hardware, then it should happen with the voice memos as well because they are being played back on the earphone!

I'll try it with an actual call as well tomorrow..

I also Call Apple, After Diagnosis and long call with many Questions, the Engineering Team will now search about it. In 3 or 4 Days i become a Call about this issue and then we will See...
Here my Video about this Problem i have made.

I think the same as you.

Has anyone had a replacement that doesn’t do this - or a device that doesn’t have the issue?

Yes I got a replacement right then and there! The genius took my phone and told me to call his phone. He went to the back to see if he was able to hear what I heard. A few minutes later he came out and confirmed what I had told him. He then said I was the first one that complained about this issue. He then proceeded to offer me a brand new unit, accessories and all.

Now onto my second phone.. sadly to say, the static/crackling is still there. Not sure what I should do. Not sure if I should bring it back or stick with it and hope for a software update that will fix it. Just knowing that it’s there is annoying as all hell.
I’m sorry to hear this but the iPhones currently in stock will most likely all have this issue. I think that there are a few options here. At least for me.
1. Replace the phone with a new one right away and if the noise is there wait for an update hoping it’s a software issue
2. Wait to replace until they “make” new ones and possibly fix the issue which is most likely hardware.
3. Keep replacing the phone until they get it together lol
4. Do nothing bc this issue is very minor and the pros outweigh the cons.
Idk yet what I’m doing but I do have an appointment with a genius today. I’ll update how that goes.

Any Apple correspondence says it’s software(if they have even heard of it) Most people think it’s software.

Not sure if you are a young or what but #4 is not acceptable. Some of us work and need to make business calls. That noise is very distracting and its hard to focus on my customers hearing that almost every call.

I really hope so. But the fact that the same noise happens when the phone is off has me thinking otherwise. Software would resolve this but I don’t think it is that.

I’m not young but I don’t really use my phone for calls and the noise isn’t that bothersome to me. But I do agree this is a phone and making a call shouldn’t be rocket science.

My wife does NOT have this issue with her 8 Plus. Gold / 64gb / Verizon

I’ve had two Space Gray phones with the issue...returning today for the 7 Plus.
You aren’t gonna stick it out? Lol I totally understand. Honestly if I had a 7 plus I wouldn’t have upgraded. Considering the fact that I have a 6 with so many issues my new iPhone 8 plus is great minus this one thing.
[doublepost=1506426304][/doublepost]Aside from the crackling noise, is anyone having any other issues?
Yesterday I had two strange things happen to me.
1. My phone kept adjusting brightness on its own. I had the settings for that turned off but one setting for auto brightness was on. So I hope that’s why it did that.
2. I have my protrait orientation locked yet when I turned my phone to the side the screen moved.
Both these things haven’t happened again so maybe it was just a settings issue but idk it doesn’t help that the phone has this crackle problem. Makes me worried I have a faulty devise.

Hi all, iPhone 8 Plus 256GB Space Grey owner here. I am in Australia on our Telstra Network in metro Melbourne and I heard the noise we are all talking about on the very first call I made with this new phone. Since then I have heard it reasonably consistently.
Just got alerted to this thread from an Australian forum called Whirlpool. There are a few iPhone 8 owners on there that just started talking about this issue today.
Tonight I tried calling my voicemail number and got the noise on two of three calls. Tonight it sounds like a repetitive click or tick noise to me. When I first heard it my initial thought was it was a static type sound. My wife heard it and said she thought it sounded like a record with a scratch or when it finishes playing and keeps spinning with the needle at the end of the record grooves for those here old enough to have listened to records!

If you have to make a call for voicemail you will hear the sound, if you have visual voicemail you shouldn’t hear the clicking as it’s not a call as such. Try testing voice memos app with the receiver speaker, there shouldn’t be the audio popping with that.

Seems to just be calls affected/ any voice over network.

According to the Apple rep I spoke with, it’s known to them and they are working towards a software fix.

Hey all, Im here having the same problem on my iphone 8 plus with tmobile, and i noticed a possible correlation from a reddit thread with people having the same problems. One person who is also on tmobile complained of this issue, while another person on the EE UK carrier complained about it as well.

The commonality between these two carriers is that they both support a feature called EVS
(More info here: ) https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/25/iphone-8-enhanced-voice-services-evs/

What carrier is everyone on? Do they know if their carrier supports EVS as well? If apple just now implemented this in the iphone 8, maybe this could be the cause of the issue?
