Hey all, Im here having the same problem on my iphone 8 plus with tmobile, and i noticed a possible correlation from a reddit thread with people having the same problems. One person who is also on tmobile complained of this issue, while another person on the EE UK carrier complained about it as well.

The commonality between these two carriers is that they both support a feature called EVS

What carrier is everyone on? Do they know if their carrier supports EVS as well? If apple just now implemented this in the iphone 8, maybe this could be the cause of the issue?
Saw this article and immediately thought of this issue. Note that I mentioned the calls I heard the crackling on were SUPER clear calls and NOT wifi calling. I don’t use wifi calling.

Verizon. They do support HD voice. Pretty sure it worked on my old 6s+ just fine.
Right, all US carriers support HD voice. But from what I understand, EVS is an "evolution" of the HD Voice codec technology which certain global carriers are touting the iphone 8 is one of the first phones to support this evolution of the audio call codec (example: http://www.tmonews.com/2016/04/t-mo...oice-services-available-now-on-select-phones/ ). I havent found confirmation if VZW or ATT support it yet.

Just for reference, in the article i just posted in my reply to sharpsteve, the article does imply that EVS can work over wifi, cellular or VoLTE, just in case anyone is reading this and has experienced the problem over wifi calling or cellular. So far ive experienced it in both cases.

Well I tried over the last few days to even turn off the voice over LTE to try to fix the issue. it did not... so I am thinking this isn't the problem but who knows what else is going on in the backend.

Same issue on my 8 with AT&T. I haven't used it for many calls yet, but did notice it on a couple. It was a very light crackling, not very loud, but enough to be irritating.

I have this noise too but I've only noticed it when receiving calls from mobiles. I've only noticed it when speaking to someone on a mobile. For instance, I phoned a client on a landline and I didn't have clicking or static, then phoned my sister on her iPhone and the line was excellent but it suffered with popping and hissing, then I phoned Apple on a landline and it was fine.

Apple suggested I ask for a new sim card from my provider but they've offered to swap the phone out for a fresh one if I wanted to do that instead. I'm hesitant to swap out the phone as it's a waste of a screen protector and I'll have to start again with setting it up, pairing everything, it's just hassle!

I wouldnt bother swapping out the phone... just yet. from what i read on Reddit, people got their phones swapped out and still had the same problem. Also, I called a couple of businesses as well as my voice mail and i could hear it. Like some have said, its not super loud, but just enough to be a nuisance.

Can everyone with this issue please do the following -
Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G then select Data Only..
Then try making test calls.
I just did this on my 8 Plus and so far I have not had the static / clicking noise at all.
Will be interested to hear other's experiences.

I'm planning to wait and see what happens. Hopefully Apple can fix it with software. I'm hesitant about swapping because as you say, the new phone may do exactly the same thing.

As I've said previously, I only get the noises when dealing another mobile, it hasn't happened when dealing a landline yet.

I am close to a TMO store so may go get a fresh SIM and make sure my device is tied correctly to my account.. MEID.
[doublepost=1506432327][/doublepost]Agree that swapping in hopes that new device will resolve the issue will be a waste. The only reason to ‘swap’ would be to ‘buy’ 14 days for Apple to resolve. Hoping there is an 11.0.1 today as iOS 11 is pretty bad.

Okay... Thats interesting. This actually worked for me! Tried calling my carrier multiple times and multiple 800 numbers and they are clear. It didnt work at first, im assuming because the phone had force itself to disconnect from the LTE network when the first call was made, but every subsequent call i made after that was fine. I havent tried calling a mobile phone yet.

From Phone's Arena:

In an unexpected upset, Apple really drops the ball with click-ridden voice-calls

It feels like for the vast majority of phones we review, we can breeze right through the call-quality tests; so long as nothing goes horribly wrong, there's usually not a ton to say. So we're a little surprised to find ourselves thinking so hard about the iPhone 8, after running into some unexpected issues with its voice-call performance.

While engaging with callers, we often observed an intermittent clicking sound coming from the phone's earpiece. This artifact doesn't seem to be emanating from the distant end of the call, and only popped up when testing the iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus, which we'll be addressing separately).

Curious if this might be a consequence of the phone's noise-canceling feature, we tried turning that off, yet the clicking continued. It's possible we just have a bad phone (or rather, bad pair of phones), but we're a little shocked to see an iPhone get something so simple so wrong. It's not like the clicking makes calls unintelligible – and some users will dismiss it as too minor to care about – but for a phone of this pedigree, and this price point, we expect voice-call perfection.

Didn't fix it for me. ATT 8+

Interesting. Since I turned it off on mine I have had crystal clear calls when dialling in to my voicemail. If I turn it back on again the crackling is very prominent in the silence between my voicemail option messages.

I will try again and report back. Maybe the LTE wasn't fully disconnected on voice.

Tried this early on as part of my troubleshooting, issue came back even on 3G.

I'd like just to remind you that in my case, I have the issue during a regular cellular call as well as during an audio facetime call.

Just got my Space Grey iPhone 8 Plus yesterday. 256 GB AT&T. I have the crackling and noticed it on my very first call with the phone today. ANNOYING!

This does not work for me.
What makes me think this is not a hardware issue is that every time I call a landline the crackling is inexistent. It only happens on calls with another cellular user. Very strange.

What carrier?
