Saw this article and immediately thought of this issue. Note that I mentioned the calls I heard the crackling on were SUPER clear calls and NOT wifi calling. I don’t use wifi calling.Hey all, Im here having the same problem on my iphone 8 plus with tmobile, and i noticed a possible correlation from a reddit thread with people having the same problems. One person who is also on tmobile complained of this issue, while another person on the EE UK carrier complained about it as well.
The commonality between these two carriers is that they both support a feature called EVS

What carrier is everyone on? Do they know if their carrier supports EVS as well? If apple just now implemented this in the iphone 8, maybe this could be the cause of the issue?
Right, all US carriers support HD voice. But from what I understand, EVS is an "evolution" of the HD Voice codec technology which certain global carriers are touting the iphone 8 is one of the first phones to support this evolution of the audio call codec (example: http://www.tmonews.com/2016/04/t-mo...oice-services-available-now-on-select-phones/ ). I havent found confirmation if VZW or ATT support it yet.Verizon. They do support HD voice. Pretty sure it worked on my old 6s+ just fine.
Just for reference, in the article i just posted in my reply to sharpsteve, the article does imply that EVS can work over wifi, cellular or VoLTE, just in case anyone is reading this and has experienced the problem over wifi calling or cellular. So far ive experienced it in both cases.Saw this article and immediately thought of this issue. Note that I mentioned the calls I heard the crackling on were SUPER clear calls and NOT wifi calling. I have this noise too but I've only noticed it when receiving calls from mobiles. I've only noticed it when speaking to someone on a mobile. For instance, I phoned a client on a landline and I didn't have clicking or static, then phoned my sister on her iPhone and the line was excellent but it suffered with popping and hissing, then I phoned Apple on a landline and it was fine.
Apple suggested I ask for a new sim card from my provider but they've offered to swap the phone out for a fresh one if I wanted to do that instead. I'm hesitant to swap out the phone as it's a waste of a screen protector and I'll have to start again with setting it up, pairing everything, it's just hassle!

I wouldnt bother swapping out the phone... just yet. from what i read on Reddit, people got their phones swapped out and still had the same problem. Also, I called a couple of businesses as well as my voice mail and i could hear it. Like some have said, its not super loud, but just enough to be a nuisance.
Okay... Thats interesting. This actually worked for me! Tried calling my carrier multiple times and multiple 800 numbers and they are clear. It didnt work at first, im assuming because the phone had force itself to disconnect from the LTE network when the first call was made, but every subsequent call i made after that was fine. I havent tried calling a mobile phone yet.Experiment time!
Can everyone with this issue please do the following -
Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G then select Data Only..
Then try making test calls.
I just did this on my 8 Plus and so far I have not had the static / clicking noise at all.
Will be interested to hear other's experiences.
Was fine on 1st call, then was back on 2nd.Experiment time!

Didn't fix it for me. ATT 8+
Interesting. Since I turned it off on mine I have had crystal clear calls when dialling in to my voicemail. If I turn it back on again the crackling is very prominent in the silence between my voicemail option messages.
