The point being the intermittent nature of the issue. I can get lucky and get 10 consecutive calls with no issue and other time I can make 10 calls that all have the issue. All calls made to the same source without hd audio involved. Therefore, in my opinion, suggesting that hd voice is the culprit is counterproductive. I think we need to move on and consider other possibilities.

I agree, based on my experience with my own iPhone 8 and on what you all guys are reporting, I think that the HD voice hypothesis has to be discarded.

I'd just like to check in and say that I experienced this issue on a call last night to a landline. Hope they get it resolved.

AT&T network
Unlocked/SIM Free iPhone 8+ 256 GB Space Grey.

The speaker could be working perfectly and just producing the sound it is given. Putting finger on it would change it.
Maybe the issue is in the mic, not in the earpiece... Because when I used youtube or apple music over cellular I never had the static. The thing is the mixture between the earpiece and the mic. That explain when you touch near the mic you hear the static noise...

It could be an interfere between both...

Just called 1800-PICK-UPS with LTE on and off and cracking is there with both calls.

Also called with Noise Cancellation on and off. Cracking there on both calls.

Experiment time!
Can everyone with this issue please do the following -
Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G then select Data Only..
Then try making test calls.
I just did this on my 8 Plus and so far I have not had the static / clicking noise at all.
Will be interested to hear other's experiences.

Didn't work for me - tried it for Data only and then not at all. Crackling still there.

A fault in software could easily be exasperated by touching around a sensitive component. I think the engineers over at Apple are paid enough to figure this out now the issue has been raised with them. This might be easier though without other issues such as creaking devices being brought into the mix or any other complication for that matter that don’t directly pertain to the issue at hand. Apple has confirmed to me and others that this seems to be software.

Right. The sound coming from the earpiece doesn’t “change” when I put pressure on the flash / mic area. It just exacerbates the high pitched clicking. The clicking sound is always the same when it is present. This is why I think it could be hardware related. Guess we will all find out sooner or later.

@Polymerpouch - I hope that is the case!

My concern or ‘issue’ is that once we are outside of 14 days we are at the mercy of Apple. I just went through a month of issues with Butterfly keyboard, including the Repair Depot leaving the tests running on my 2nd repaired machine. I used their tests to confirm an immediate fail. Since, I have returned my MBP/MB as I am done with Butterfly.

Who’s to say that outside of 14 days this cracking doesn’t become normal operation on low-blah blah cellular networks..

The connection and amplifier issues (which I think someone here raised) are concerning. We will see..

If it's not fixed within 14 days mine is going back - too much money for poor design and build..........if that turns out to be the issue and if they do exchange handsets later, you're into the Apple screen lottery. The 8+ I have is perfect every other way.....grrrrr..........

Agreed. Love this phone.. but not keeping a cracking call phone.
What do we go back to? 6S? I can’t do Android as much as I would like to try.

Good luck! I was lucky to have a genius that actually acknowledged the problem and was able to hear what I heard. Other than this issue, I love my 8+. Its so smooth and super fast!
Yeah I agree I love my phone. I don’t want to replace it unless I’m guaranteed a fix.

Shame, design, software, or supplier. Either way hard to move forward.

I don’t think I’ll be returning mine. I love it too much lol

I've had this issue on my 8+ on AT&T since I opened it out of the box on Friday.
I made a genius bar appointment yesterday. Genius confirmed he could hear the crackling/static and replaced the device on the spot. Phone was fine for the rest of the day yesterday. Today, the static is back in full force.

The device does creak when touched around the camera area.

I’m not disputing that. Mine personally doesn’t. It feels solid. That isn’t related to the static issue as far as I’m concerned. I’d take your device for replacement if it creaks.

I hope you’re right. I don’t want to return mine replace sure. But are you replacing yours or returning it?

Yeah

I’ve replaced mine with my carrier on day one, the replacement phone suffers with the issue. Whether you replace/refund with your device is only something you can decide.

Just hope a software fix clears this issue up, the phone is excellent otherwise. Probably the nicest feeling iPhone I’ve owned.

I have the exact same issue! When I got my second device, I heard the static almost instantly but it went away. This morning it came back.. ughhh this is so annoying
