All this talk of 4g/carrier relation should stop because this happens over facetime audio with no sim card present.
No, I’m not going to wait it out.I’m not young but I don’t really use my phone for calls and the noise isn’t that bothersome to me. But I do agree this is a phone and making a call shouldn’t be rocket science.

You aren’t gonna stick it out? Lol I totally understand. Honestly if I had a 7 plus I wouldn’t have upgraded. Considering the fact that I have a 6 with so many issues my new iPhone 8 plus is great minus this one thing.
[doublepost=1506426304][/doublepost]Aside from the crackling noise, is anyone having any other issues?
Yesterday I had two strange things happen to me.
1. My phone kept adjusting brightness on its own. I had the settings for that turned off but one setting for auto brightness was on. So I hope that’s why it did that.
2. I have my protrait orientation locked yet when I turned my phone to the side the screen moved.
Both these things haven’t happened again so maybe it was just a settings issue but idk it doesn’t help that the phone has this crackle problem. Makes me worried I have a faulty devise.
This makes no difference for me, I’ve tried it multiple times over the past few days.Experiment time!
Can everyone with this issue please do the following -
Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G then select Data Only..
Then try making test calls.
I just did this on my 8 Plus and so far I have not had the static / clicking noise at all.
Will be interested to hear other's experiences.
This does not work for me.
What makes me think this is not a hardware issue is that every time I call a landline the crackling is inexistent. It only happens on calls with another cellular user. Very strange.
Same as me.
Landlines are fine, mobiles crackle.
The issue is intermittent, you are not hearing it when calling landlines out of luck/coincidence. The issue even manifests itself when making a call over facetime audio. People should stop jumping to conclusions prematurely and instead read what has already been discovered/disproved.Same as me.

They would never admit hardware problem until absolutely had too. Especially in early stages. The will quietly fix and take care of those that complain.Any Apple correspondence says it’s software(if they have even heard of it) Most people think it’s software.

I’m sorry to hear this but the iPhones currently in stock will most likely all have this issue. I think that there are a few options here. At least for me.
1. Replace the phone with a new one right away and if the noise is there wait for an update hoping it’s a software issue
2. Wait to replace until they “make” new ones and possibly fix the issue which is most likely hardware.
3. Keep replacing the phone until they get it together lol
4. Do nothing bc this issue is very minor and the pros outweigh the cons.
Idk yet what I’m doing but I do have an appointment with a genius today. I’ll update how that goes.
My carrier does not support hd voice, other people have experimented turning off hd voice with no change to the issue.lol. U ok bro?
I've made enough calls today and yesterday to landlines and mobiles to be able to safely say on MY phone it's a mobile only fault.
I've made 6 calls to landlines today, all fine. The 3 mobile calls I received yesterday had the issue and the 4 mobile calls I have been on today had the issue.
As has been said in the thread it could be the HD voice causing it, which would only occur during calls to mobiles or FaceTime where HD Voice is supported.

Ridiculous considering this design has been around long time. From Phone's Arena:
In an unexpected upset, Apple really drops the ball with click-ridden voice-calls
It feels like for the vast majority of phones we review, we can breeze right through the call-quality tests; so long as nothing goes horribly wrong, there's usually not a ton to say. So we're a little surprised to find ourselves thinking so hard about the iPhone 8, after running into some unexpected issues with its voice-call performance.
While engaging with callers, we often observed an intermittent clicking sound coming from the phone's earpiece. This artifact doesn't seem to be emanating from the distant end of the call, and only popped up when testing the iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus, which we'll be addressing separately).
Curious if this might be a consequence of the phone's noise-canceling feature, we tried turning that off, yet the clicking continued. It's possible we just have a bad phone (or rather, bad pair of phones), but we're a little shocked to see an iPhone get something so simple so wrong. It's not like the clicking makes calls unintelligible – and some users will dismiss it as too minor to care about – but for a phone of this pedigree, and this price point, we expect voice-call perfection.

OK, I'd like to share with you a fact that makes your conclusions untrue: I can confirm the same noises during a call to a landline number I've just made, one minute ago.
I'm in Spain, Movistar is my carrier (supports HD voice), iPhone 8 silver 256 GB.

It is happening to me on both mobile to mobile and mobile to landline sadly.I'm planning to wait and see what happens. Hopefully Apple can fix it with software. I'm hesitant about swapping because as you say, the new phone may do exactly the same thing.
As I've said previously, I only get the noises when dealing another mobile, it hasn't happened when dealing a landline yet.
Calm yourself down. Who is getting high and mighty? Due to the intermittent nature of the issue if there is already confirmation from others that some things do not make a difference what is the point of suggesting that it might be related to those things? Otherwise we will keep going around in circles.Whoa take a breath and calm down dude...
I have now made a total of 20 calls to my Telstra Australia voicemail number “101” tonight. Every call I make with mobile data set to data and voice has the crackle/ticking noise in the silences between the recorded voice menu options. If I turn it to data only I get nothing but silence in those same points between recorded menu options.
Clearly everyone’s mileage may vary but we are all in this together and trying to share our experiences and get a resolution. No need to get all high and mighty when people are trying to help....
I’ve already done this and it did not rectify the issue. It has still been present. I always have mine set to Data Only. =)

So we have differing experiences. Doesn't make either of us wrong.
It's a fact you've had it on landline and a fact that I have not.
What now?

Just to add to your list, it has also been reported to occur with hd voice off and with carriers not supporting hd voice to begin with.I agree, I only wanted to prove that, so far, the issue has been reported to happen during:
1. Calls to/from mobile lines.
2. Calls to/from landlines.
3. Audio facetime.
This issue is intermitent, and I think that, in most cases, we're talking about the same issue.
And as far as I know, nobody has yet reported it during voice memo.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The speaker could be working perfectly and just producing the sound it is given. Putting finger on it would change it.The crackling noise occurs for me regardless of call type. I’ve tried calling cellular, landlines, and voice over IP lines. LTE on or off doesn’t matter, neither does turning off noise cancellation (as Apple suggested to me). Listening to a voice mail also triggered it one time.
If this is software related, why does putting pressure around the noise canceling mic / camera flash area exacerbate the issue? This part of it confuses me, how can software be sensitive to finger pressure?
The point being the intermittent nature of the issue. I can get lucky and get 10 consecutive calls with no issue and other time I can make 10 calls that all have the issue. All calls made to the same source without hd audio involved. Therefore, in my opinion, suggesting that hd voice is the culprit is counterproductive. I think we need to move on and consider other possibilities.Because I am up to 25 test calls to my voicemail now with mobile data set to data only and the crackling simply isn’t there. It comes back as soon as I turn it back on to data and voice. Clearly some of us are seeing different occurrences and results so it is worth a discussion. Since I assume none of us are Apple engineers all we can do is discuss it and share ideas any way.... where is the harm in that? There’s 19 pages here now, easy to miss something...
