As an Apple products consumer since 1983, I've worked in mixed environments for most of my life. While the Mac is generally easier to use, there are a few areas where it falls short. I'm not a fan of high-resolution Apple displays because desktop apps often make the hierarchical file system icons look tiny, like 8-point size. You can scale up with Command +, but it always feels like a workaround. For day-to-day computing, I much prefer the 3:2 screen ratio with lower resolution, which is easier on my eyes. The attributes that once made the Mac famous are no longer as cutting-edge as they used to be. Frankly, if I were to buy a new computer today, it would be a custom Windows machine. 🤷‍♂️

I flip-flopped again (about a week ago). Ditched the Mac and iPad Pro. Now just using my i7-13700X, 32GB RAM, 2TB, RTX 4060 Acer Predator Helios Neo 16" I bought a while back as my gaming PC for $999. Coupled that with my Surface Pro 9 for note-taking and my travel PC. I think it might actually stick this time.

Only Apple stuff I have currently in use (not including my kids or wife) is an iPhone 15 plus and AW Series 6.

This, always been an annoyance for me.

Just found this thread. If this is also about dual booting between macOS and Windows, then it is interesting to notice that Windows 11 is running much faster then Sequoia beta, and even smoother. I installed Windows 11 using Boot Camp just to check quite sometime ago, but didn't use it since I upgraded macOS to Sequoia Beta. Actually, I was a bit surprised, as at the beginning, it was heating a bit, always running AMD graphics, but now after newest Windows updates, that's gone. Even Windows 11 needs less light to than macOS.

(Mine is a 2018 15" MBP doing so well with my use case (home office, light image editing etc) I don't feel like moving to M-chips yet.) Also the screenshot looks much livelier...

Update time.

I needed to free up some cash which meant turning my attention to my 2 system setup. I don’t do a huge amount of admin for my business so I could use my gaming desktop for that, allowing me to sell my Mac mini.

I then decided to sell the studio display because I can’t justify it solely for work, now that the mini has gone. So I picked up a Gigabyte M27U 4K 160hz monitor with built in KVM. This allows me to use it for both my work MBA and my gaming desktop.

All that was left to do then was return my 1440p gaming monitor and swap my peripherals around.

I just need to settle on what to do with music listening.

Is it only Intel Graphics, without the additional AMD graphics? What about the battery health?
It has a Nvidia 750 graphic.
Battery health is with 83% excellent, the NVRAM is set to charge 80% max.
OCLP enables the GMUX so that the iGP can beused on battery, providing the same runtime than OSX.

Thank you for the reply. Can you explain how you did all that, "the NVRAM is set to charge 80% max" and how "OCLP enables the GMUX so that the iGP can be used on battery, providing the same runtime than OSX." Or, can you direct me to links on that?

To limit the charge, you have some tools, like AlDente, or the excellent https://github.com/godly-devotion/charge-limiter. The limit set is written to the SMC and is vlaid for the whole computer, even under Windows.

You can enable GMUX under the "Settings, Extra" of OCLP before being installed to the EFI.

I’ve been thinking about simplifying my setup for a while now and have given my specific use case(s) some careful thought and have decided to experiment and see if I could use an iPad mini in place of my M2 MBA.

Lately, I’ve been using that (the MBA) to play music, stream YouTube and such while I play games on my dedicated gaming laptop. At one time, yeah, I was busy enough and could justify having two separate machines around like that.

Things have kind of tailed off over the past year and now most of what I did save for the MBA (office/web tasks, email management, light video encoding to name a few things), can be done just as quickly/easily on my other laptop when I’m not gaming. With a (old AF) Magic Keyboard and a bluetooth mouse, multitasking in Safari isn’t too bad on a 6th gen iPad mini. It takes some getting used to, sure and switching between apps isn’t quite the same in iOS as it is in macOS, but for now, it’s working out pretty well.

Is this the same monitor? I'm looking for a budget 4k gaming monitor and this seems like a contender? I'll be building a PC soon but need a second monitor immediately for work so am starting with this.

I do wish the ice white option was available.

That’s the M27Q, you want the M27U.

I have been building my own windows PC's for decades. When shooting professional sports I would use a MacBook Pro in the field for on-site editing, captioning and uploading to wire services and use a PC in my home office for archiving and editing stock images. After all these years I don't even notice or think about the differences when moving from one OS to the other.

I would build a new photo editing PC every three years while shooting professionally as a second job/hobby, but I don't shoot sports anymore and it has been 8 years since my last build. I still shoot a lot and have started 4K video editing and my PC can't handle all the new AI features in Adobe, DxO, and Topaz to name a few.

My build parts have started to arrive and since all my previous builds were Intel based I stayed with what I know. After the fact I learned of instability issues some experienced on 14th generation Intel CPU's including the Intel Core i9-14900KF I bought. Seems recent Bios updates have it under control. I'll find out soon. Here is my last build from 8 years ago.
