Also foldable market is tiny. Apple can easily spend few more years r&d this concept to see if it flops and if not (which I doubt) release their own model.

Apple want you to spend $1200 on an iPhone 15 Pro and a further $800 on an iPad Pro. This gives them double the market for accessory upsell.

From a business point of view it makes no sense for them to even build a foldable iPhone nor one that can output a desktop to a display.

Its Apple and we all know they only release perfected and polished products so it wont be a duck for sure.
Not to belabor the point, but you still haven't answered WHY. You're telling me that it's Apple and this won't be a duck. Okay, fine.

But WHY? For what reason does Apple have to do like every other manufacturer and release a foldable?

What money?

Apple isn't going to shank it's iPad and iPhone sales for a foldable that caters to a market segment the size of the iPhone Mini. And in my opinion, that's the size of the crowd that wants foldables.

You're all very vocal about what you want, so is the group who wants a new iPhone Mini. But that has not apparently translated into enough sales for Apple.

This is probably the same argument against all the 32" iMac rumors. Does Apple think releasing a new product is going to get net new purchases or just cannibalize some other product offering? Do they see people demanding these devices switching to alternatives outside their offerings?

It’s called hard reality vs vocal minority. Apple iMac accounts for less than 5% of Mac revenue. Even if you assume All Mac Pro and IMac and Mac mini users will buy 32 inch iMac, it’s still a tiny portion of mac revenue. Just doesn’t make sense for a tiny niche. iPhone mini was a disaster, older iphone models, iPhone SE outsold the mini. Apple has to invest, support and take the risk for a niche market. If Foldable phones were all that, Samsung and others would be selling and generating revenue and bragging about how many iPhone users switch to fold.

Not even if they price it correctly? Like, foldable phone would cost same as iPhone + iPad + little extra and iPhone than can output to a display (“Ultra”…?) would cost like iPhone + Computer. o_O

Apples foldable could very well cost more than an iPhone 15 Pro and Ipad Pro M4 combined. And you have to remember being Apple, they know that people will clamber to buy Apples most elite product whatever the cost. Its the opposite end of the spectrum to the iPhone Mini. Also in terms of Why, just look at the Z Flip, it has a very cool and trendy factor to it, is appealing to younger people and with some Apple marketing magic would be a killer product for them.

Just to go back to Gurman and other rumor sources: the rumor is Apple is working on a foldable flip phone and a foldable 20" iPad for 2026 or later. Not seeing any rumors for something Galaxy ZFold size. A foldable iPad will definitely cost more than $2k starting price. And even with a cellular BTO, it's still a huge compromise to use that as a "phone."

Do you believe that with the current state of foldables, Apple could sell this device? Even if we say that Apple makes a better device are you going to plunk down $2000 for a device that has a crease in the middle and only somewhat better quality than what's out now?

Oh, but Apple will make it better. Right, got that. How much better considering the current level of technology? Still worth paying $2000?

What about all the devices that break? How's Apple going to deal with that expenditure? You have to factor that in to the equation as well.

Very cool and trendy. Appealing to younger people. So, Apple should lurch from trend to trend in order to make a 'killing' off younger people.

Because that's what got them to the spot they're in now.

The thing is as one payment it seems astronomical and all you have to show for it is one single point of failure.

For the price of a Z Fold 6 you could buy an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPad Air and all the extras you’ll ever need. When you look at one device vs a pile of stuff your brain says ‘more = better value’

Well it was the iPod that got them to where they are now. Their marketing campaign with the iPod, the cool Gorrilaz advert etc turned the generic mp3 player into something that everyone wanted for a fairly high cost. iPod turned into iPhone and here we are now.

Anyway eyoungren i get you dont really like foldables and have no desire to buy one, but surely you must see why some people might want something like this.

Wonder why, with all of the forward thinking innovation, Apple is so far behind (years actually) in the production of a phone like the Galaxy Z. Were I not such an Apple addict, and like the integration of my devices, I would seriously think of switching. Nothing like this from Apple until 2026!
Samsung Fold has a nasty crease in the middle. When Apple does it, there wont be a crease. See the difference. Perfection takes time.

I can totally see why some want it. I just don't believe that it's anything more than a trend that won't last long. People are looking/desiring something new in the cellphone space and right now that's a foldable phone (because "cool!"). The moment there's something else that's either 'cooler' or better, attention will shift to that.

I'm not saying there isn't a market for foldables. Just that the market isn't that big and it's not worth Apple's time.

Wishcasting won't make it so.

A few patents have shown up for a folding iPhone over the past few years. I think that Apple is developing a foldable iPhone but they are watching the market and making the best folding device possible and if they can’t make it better, I don’t think they will make one at all.

Absolutely agree with you Nebula. Apple have taken their sweet time with foldables, probably because of durability issues and crease in the screen. The durability issue has pretty much been ironed out now, but the crease remains but if you look at the One Plus Open the crease is also slowly disappearing. Honestly as soon as Apple announces their version of the Z Flip it will be a day 1 purchase for me (Hopefully next year according to some rumours).
I think this is the reason. Until that crease is flawless or close to it I don’t see Apple releasing it. And to be honest, why would they do it sooner? Does anyone know if Apple is losing any of the market share in direct relation to the foldable phones that are out there?

Why wait? Buy a foldable! Enjoy the Crease and the flimsy screens 😊

Actually… those two together are roughly the same price as a flagship foldable, so…
😉

If useful in a closed state, they will be squarish and clunky when open. If squarish when closed then I’d have to open it to get any use out of it, in that case you’ve got an extra step before you start.
Presumably, the solution to that would be a second fold! Just like how you would fold an A4 letter to put into an envelope. Probably more of a challenge than it's worth though. I agree with the interesting point you made though - a squarish phone would be weird.

Accessory sales are nothing. There's no guarantee the customer is silly enough to buy a $59 FineWoven case.

You think an Apple foldable will only be priced at $1,999?

This is why AT&T has decided to not carry the Pixel Fold. Either they are worried about warranty costs or they already know that foldables don’t sell well.
