You seem to be missing the whole "and run OS X" thing here. People seem to be interested in the 4850 equipped iMac so that they can run OS X and boot camp into Windows for the occassional frag fest and do it all in one box and get decent gaming performance. Obviously the iMac with any graphics card is not going to satisfy someone who wants top notch game performance, but those folks probably will run a dedicated Windows PC anyway for gaming.

Also, I don't think you'll find too many people looking at the iMac who think that a FrankenMac Hackintosh box is "just as good".

Fine, but I don't really understand why running OSX would be a requirement unless people have apps exclusive to it that they need to use. Maybe they like using OSX more, but would they rather have OSX than great game performance? It's really up to the person I guess.

I personally like OSX better for laptops than windows vista since I don't do much on my laptop anyway, and I personally believe Mac OSX has better power management, although I can find pc notebooks with better battery life than my macbook. But I don't know, mac osx just feels a lot better integrated into apple's laptops than Vista does into pc laptops. I don't know if windows 7 will change that though. However, I wouldn't want OSX in my main desktop machine.

Ordered on March 5 and it's finally shipped!

After contacted Apple, they upgrade my shipping to priority shipping.
The order status became "Prepared for Shipping" this morning and now "Shipped."
I will have to wait a bit until Fedex updates the tracking info to know where in the world my iMac is shipping from.
I am in BC, Canada, btw. :)

Here's my configuration, FYI:
2.93GHZ INTEL CORE 2 DUO
4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM-2X2GB
ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB
640GB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
IWORK '09 PREINSTALLED
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
WL KYBD & USER'S GUIDE
COUNTRY KIT,IMAC 24

I'd suggest everyone still waiting to call :apple:. It would definitely help.
I am surprised how fast they responded to my inquiry.

The primary reason that people choose an Apple is often OS X! I'm an MCSE, so basically I have a 3rd degree black belt in all things Microsoft, and I vastly prefer OS X because I find that I can get more stuff done with it with less headaches, especially when using the Terminal.

I like having full control of the machine without tons of annoying pop ups, slow downs from spy sweepers and anti-virus, etc. I like not having a bloated registry that requires a wipe of the hard drive every 9-12 months!

I have a 4850 equipped iMac on order so that I can run this nice operating system and still occassionally boot camp into Windows if I want to play a game or use some utility that doesn't exist in the OS X world yet.

I'm a Windows user myself and I've wanted to switch to Mac for a long time. Why? because i want to get rid of the stupid crap that messes with my system and get work done. i hate it when there is a problem with my PC while I am doing research or writing a report. it just annoys me!

Macs have problems too, just less of them since OS X was written from the ground up without dinosaurs like the registry, fewer entry points for mal ware and other exploits.

Also, if you know UNIX systems then the Mac is a dream to work with because it is running UNIX under the hood and you can do full blown scripting and file manipulation from the terminal quite easily.

big meh from me. Windows is so much more customizable, and i do it all without popups (just disable uac) and ive never heard of people needing to wipe their drive every 12 months. If you do, i hardly doubt "you're blackbelt windows" I hardly ever run any antivirus/spyware software and I never get any viruses or spyware. Its also pretty much a fact that OSX has more security vulnerabilities than windows XP and Vista combined in the past 2 years. The only difference being people dont write stuff to take advantage of them in osx. Windows vista is actually much more secure than osx.

I'm not very good with the programing/scripting. I want to learn soon but i have my studies to do! I'm in high school. Also i want to do some video editing for the family and for a friend of mine who wants to start a Youtube video series. I've heard that Macs are good for editing so i'm ready to go on that part.

I know that macs have problems but the support from apple is fantastic. The iPhone support is the best ever.

Well I'm probably one of the most angry people on the forum about Apple not giving shipment to us March orders...

...but apple finally shipped my order today. Will arrive tomorrow. That's 5 days earlier than the original est. shipment date. However, it was 39 days after I ordered it!

30 FPS doesn't necessarily mean at times you are getting 50fps and at times 10fps. If you can get a constant 30 fps, I would call a game playable and others do. In fact a lot of console games are at 30 fps.

And if people are getting the imacs with the 4850 for gaming, I'd recommend they skip on the imac. You don't need a mac for sexy. You can get a nice unibody all aluminum case like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163120 and fill it in with a q6600 and a gtx 275 or 4890 for much cheaper.

It is impossible to get a constant 30FPS because if you lock the game to the refresh rate on your monitor and you were getting a solid 30FPS with no variation you'd have a major headache.

Consoles, on the other hand, have to work with TVs (both new HDTVs and old CRTs). Of course they a programmed for 30FPS because a normal TV can't display a faster refresh rate (hence the vertical bars you see on TVs captured on film).

I hardly ever run any antivirus/spyware software and I never get any viruses or spyware.

Lucky you! Be happy that you're a member of the select few. Ask any of my friends/relatives who have had me clean spyware/viruses/crapware off their Windows PCs on a regular basis.

Fortunately, my days of working for them are over, as most have now switched to Macs (and I no longer provide support to those who stuck with Windows). :p

Yea New iMAc. Boo Time Machine!

So my new iMac came and it's sweet! However, I used a restore from Time Machine to get it going. Everything is in working order except it won't use my time machine backups anymore. What gives? Do I have to start a new backup?

Well, you no longer get infected running Windows by only visiting pr0n sites and downloading crap from underground pirate websites. You can pretty much just be online and get infected these days. Whatever though, if you're happy with the pile o' crap that is MS Windows then good for you. Does make me wonder why you hang out in the Mac forum.

As for reloading. If you install and uninstall a lot of software then that is a must. Windows applications, even today, are notorious for not deleting registry keys or DLLs. I've frequently run into problems with audio and video software screwing up codec assignments in Windows, which is a well known problem that MS provides no real support for. Often times it's easier and (slightly) less painful to deal with a machine that is developing these issues to simply wipe it out and reload it rather than debug the problems, which can take hours (and hours!).

I work with some pretty sharp people and we've all bemoaned the pile of crap that Windows has become since XP was released. It's only gotten worse. Win7 might be a bit better, but as long as there is a windows registry, and lots of things getting loaded into memory even after a program has been removed from add/remove programs, I don't want any part of it, other than running a boot partition for it for some light gaming.

Probably the wrong form to ask,.....but my brother in Mac :) I would say yes you would have to re-backup i guess just hope there is not some crazy freak power outage during the couple hours while it re-backsup

For what it's worth...

I placed my order for my 3.06 iMac with the 4850 on March 7th. At that time I was given a ship date of April 20 and a delivery date, to New Jersey, on April 24th. I also opted for the full size keyboard, no other changes. For the last two weeks I have checked my status multiple times a day hoping for a change. I finally came to the realization that it was no coming sooner and would be delayed if anything. Five min ago I received and e-mail informing me that my iMac was shipped from Newark, CA today with an arrival date in NJ on the 22. I went with standard shipping and was ready to call Apple like everyone else to get it bumped to overnight. Anyway I'm not sure what would take 5 business days to get across country, it seems kinda slow but I'm not going to complain too much because my new baby it on it's way...
Everyone else, hang in there, especially those of you who are getting one for the first time. Congrats on a wise decision. My Powerbook G4 is almost 6 years old and still going...

(now back to the topic)

I have been following this post since it first went up but had not posted until 2 seconds ago.

Ordered mine on March 5th (24" iMac: 3.06GHz/4GB RAM/1TB/ATI Radeon HD 4850) from a Apple reseller in ON, Canada still nothing (sadly I have no idea when i should receive it because resellers do not have tracking info for the customers :(). but meh i will be happy when its here :)

Well now who will be the next shipping lottery winner??? Who will be next to get their status changed from Not Shipped Yet to Prepared to Ship?
Do you feel lucky? Well Do You? :p

Well, status hasn't changed yet, but they charged my card this evening! As of now it still says shipping 4/21, delivery 4/22 -- I'll post if that changes. So I'm really excited but worried at the same time; hopefully won't have the same problems the folks over in the "iMac freezing" thread are. In California btw, and ordered on 3/17.

Ok I went through this thread and no doubt missed alot of people, but the list below is who I see that has ordered in March and has not had their status changed from Not Shipped Yet to Prepared for shipping or Shipped. I only listed people I think are located in the USA. So if you are in the list and not from USA, let us know. This is just a status check for outstanding orders of any speed Ghz iMac as long as they have a 4850 option.

fezzik22 - ordered 3/4
blackbow - ordered 3/17
maj3stic - ordered 3/17
viva la ban - ordered 3/19
MTShipp - ordered 3/22
Krogren - ordered 3/29
WizardHunt - ordered 3/30
jmpage2 - unknown order date

If I missed anyone let us know post your name to the list or start another one. The above people are still waiting for their iMacs and to my knowledge are located in the USA. If you are not located in the USA your name was not put on this list. Reason: I think there is more delay in the USA than anywhere else.

PLEASE STATE YOUR LOCATION WHEN WANTING TO BE ADDED TO THIS LIST SO I KNOW YOU ARE LOCATED IN THE USA. THANKS!

I ordered mine on 3/18 and my status remains ships April 22 and arrives April 23, but my credit card was charged today so I'm hopeful that it will be shipping soon.

Ordered March 8, 3.06 w/numeric keypad. Haven't received any notifications whatsoever, credit card not yet charged, status still showing original ship date of 4/20 and delivery date of 4/24, to Brooklyn, NY.

Called support two days ago and was told by a fairly unsympathetic rep that no one could've received theirs yet, and that there was nothing she could do.

if its any help, I live in NJ as well, and the last two computers I got from apple, my g5 tower and 17MBP both only took 2 days to get here, as I recall. So with any luck you'll have it by friday anyway.

I ordered on the 3/9 and just got my shipping confirmation today too, so looks like they might be working semi-regionally.

Ordered on 6th March
Sydney - ordered the 2.93 GHz, 4850, Numeric Keypad.

Was meant to be shipped end of April but it got brought fwd. Delivery date Friday 17th but they came 2 days early and I wasn't home - now arriving tomorrow - oh yeeeeah. :D

Just to start another conversation in this thread, I have the latest build of Windows 7 and a fresh key and plan to install it and Crysis over the w/e. Anybody know if I will run into driver problems for running DX10 etc on the 4850 card?
