On iPadOS, admittedly. The OS the EU is investigating for inclusion as a gatekeeper.

Who says everything in a store needs to be profitabl?
Same argument as when Apple distributes free apps.
But the store could also simply make money by charging me for a download.

Sure - and there are many that sell direct and are cheaper - and I’ve bought apps cheaper from them.

Not necessarily but most probably. Others are proving it can be done for 12% commission or less, instead of Apple‘s 30 (for popular paid apps).

👉 Competition will settle that question swiftly.

Kind of funny how the fanboys’ and apologists’ best argument for justifying the fairness of a 30% rate is (physical) retail margins - when Apple themselves make a salient distinction by only charging for products/services not

Retail stores stock and physically secure their products - while software download stores have a totally different cost structure.

Sideloading has been around for years and will be - it’s just that Apple contractually doesn’t allow it for distribution to consumers - for commercial reasons.
Physical stores return a lot less than 70-85% of sale price to companies they sell.
Cost of goods to door for good businesses is 30-35% for importer/distributors and 65-70% for retail.
high retail rents, staffing, stock and returns it all adds up. it's inefficient.

and games consoles would love to stop retail. some have tried download only. but then stores wont sell the hardware...

30% is the max Apple receive. often 15% and many times nothing.

how competitive do you think an alt app store is going to be when the Technology Access Fee is 27%?
are they going to haggle with you and give you a cut of the 3% profit they make? ;)

Bring on the EU release and lets see how badly this fails ...

You're right, not everything in the store needs to be profitable. But most do if you want updates and new features added over time. A civic minded individual might release something for free. good on them. but look at how many people tried to copy and monetize Wordle clones.

You don't need to be a fanboy or apologist to be concerned about opening up iOS.
anyone who has a long history in IT knows what a pain viruses and locked devices can cause users and companies.
we have countries using attacks on devices to steal money and extort ransoms.
every opportunity to exploit a weakness they will take.

sideloading was always viewed by Apple as against their intent and a weakness and they kept changing it and breaking the sideloads with a new release. Just like Sony did on PSP.
