  Mac16,8   MBP 14” M4 Max (384b)
  Mac16,9   MBP 16” M4 Max (384b)

Looks like you can BTO the 14" to the 512b M4 Max, so there's one model missing here.

Both Mac16,7 and Mac16,11 has M4 Pro. Which one is MacBook Pro and which one is Mac mini?

Dunno - online I've seen people say it's the MacBook Pro, obviously in my previous list the specific identifiers are less important than moving the Airs into the Mac16's and making the Mac17's Studio desktops. We should know for sure once Apple updates their identify your MacBook Pro model webpage and similar pages for the other devices announced this week. However, we know my list is wrong because, like the others, I didn't account for the multiple models of Maxes for different bandwidths. Something I should've thought of since the 15th generation did the same thing.

Here are my predictions:
Code:
M4 Macs
  Mac16,1   MBP 14” M4
  Mac16,2   iMac 24” M4 (2-port)
  Mac16,3   iMac 24” M4 (4-port)
  Mac16,4   DNE
  Mac16,5   Mac mini M4
  Mac16,6   MBP 14” M4 Pro
  Mac16,7   MBP 16” M4 Pro
  Mac16,8   MBP 14” M4 Max (384b)
  Mac16,9   MBP 16” M4 Max (384b)
  Mac16,10  MBP 16” M4 Max (512b)
  Mac16,11  Mac mini M4 Pro
  Mac16,12  MBA 13” M4
  Mac16,13  MBA 15” M4

M5 Macs
  Mac17,1   Mac Studio M5 Ultra
  Mac17,2   Mac Studio M5 Extreme
Interesting I like it. It's better than mine - especially since I hadn't previously caught that in the 15th generation Apple had split the Max MacBook Pro models up by bandwidth giving the Pro/Max 14" and 16" 3 models each (with the 14" getting an additional 4th model for the base M4). However, this raises a problem. You've didn't give the 14" the 512b model, but Apple is definitely selling the 14" with the full memory bandwidth. Not sure how to resolve that ... unless Mac16,4 actually does exist! :) 🤷‍♂️ I wonder why 4 was skipped?

Huh ... I typed all this before realizing there was another page of replies and that @mr_roboto had already pointed this out! Oh well I'm not deleting it!

As for the Mac17's ... you don't think the Studio will get the Max? Hmmm ... I think it probably will. If an Extreme exists it may only go into the Mac Pro and in fact I think Gurman sort of says that - although he isn't clear* if the Ultra is made from two Maxes or if the Ultra is a single Hidra die, two of which make an Extreme (or if the Ultra is 2 Hidra die, 2 Ultras still make an Extreme, etc ...).

*It's possible he is and I've simply forgotten.

Okay here's a really weird prediction ... based on thinking, yeah the Studio would get the Max chip ...

M4 Macs
Mac16,1 MBP 14” M4
Mac16,2 iMac 24” M4 (2-port)
Mac16,3 iMac 24” M4 (4-port)
Mac16,4 DNE
Mac16,5 Mac mini M4
Mac16,6 MBP 14” M4 Pro
Mac16,7 MBP 16” M4 Pro
Mac16,8 MBP 14” M4 Max (384b)
Mac16,9 MBP 16” M4 Max (384b)
Mac16,10 MBP 16” M4 Max (512b)
Mac16,11 Mac mini M4 Pro
Mac16,12 MBP 16” M4 Max (512b)
Mac16,13 Mac Studio M4 Max (512b) (spring/summer) - M2 Max only had one model number which referred to both Maxes because of course there was no binning by bandwidth (or CPU count) in the M2 Max. So I am positing that only the high end Max goes into the Studio.

M5 Macs
Mac17,1 Macbook Air M5 13" (spring)
Mac17,2 Macbook Air M5 15" (spring)

with later M5 macs being the high end Studio/Pro with Hidra chips (and of course eventually the rest of the Macs that are to adopt M5 eventually doing so)

I don't love this as the Mac Studio M4 would be sold as the last Studio version along side the M5 Studio released roughly in the same time period. That doesn't feel very satisfying. The only other solution is that there is another unreleased Mac model we don't know about yet. It can't be an iMac with M4 Pro, an M4 Pro SOC designed like the M3 Pro might've fit, but the actual M4 Pro? Nah, I don't see it. Too hot. I dunno, maybe the binned SOC it could (8+4/16). But that seems unlikely since they could've released that this week. So 🤷‍♂️

Of course the other possibility is that the model numbers found by @Jamie I are wrong/incomplete. Has anyone checked the file in question to confirm? We're now into the release of the actual OS, does anyone know which file it was?

I’ve done a bit of a dive into firmware stuff which should add clarity (I was wrong and for weird reasons). I’ll probably first post my findings at the other place tomorrow.

FWIW, Mac16,11 being the M4 Pro Mac Mini fits my prediction at #32, but Mac16,7 is wrong, I’ll guess it’s the M4 Pro MacBook Pro 16"

Apple hasn’t updated the “How to identify your iMac/Mini/MacBook Pro” pages yet, so here’s an adjusted guess:

Mac16,1 :: M4 MacBook Pro 14"

Mac16,2 :: M4 iMac (Two ports)
Mac16,3 :: M4 iMac (Four ports)

Mac16,5 :: M4 Mac mini

Mac16,6 :: M4 Pro MacBook Pro 14"
Mac16,8 :: M4 Max MacBook Pro 14"

Mac16,7 :: M4 Pro MacBook Pro 16"
Mac16,9 :: M4 Max MacBook Pro 16"

Mac16,10 :: M4 Ultra Mac Pro

Mac16,11 :: M4 Pro Mac mini
Mac16,12 :: M4 Max Mac Studio
Mac16,13 :: M4 Ultra Mac Studio

Mac16,5 is confirmed to be an M4 Max now on GB6 browser. Likely a 16" instead of a 14" for being a review unit.

Alright, this is what I've got:
Code:
M4 Macs
  Mac16,1   MBP 14” M4
  Mac16,2   iMac 24” M4 (2-port)
  Mac16,3   iMac 24” M4 (4-port)
  Mac16,4   DNE
  Mac16,5   MBP 16” M4 Max (384b & 512b)
  Mac16,6   MBP 14” M4 Max (384b & 512b)
  Mac16,7   MBP 16” M4 Pro
  Mac16,8   MBP 14” M4 Pro
  Mac16,9   Mac Studio M4 Max
  Mac16,10  Mac mini M4
  Mac16,11  Mac mini M4 Pro
  Mac16,12  MBA 13” M4
  Mac16,13  MBA 15” M4

M5 Macs
  Mac17,1   iMac 30” M5
  Mac17,2   iMac 30” M5 Pro

It seems that both of the variants of the M4 Max use the same firmware (perhaps some sort of chop or fusing) and thus do not require a different designations. Also, it's likely the M5 and M5 Pro are in a later testing phase, but not others in that lineup.

Edit: To be clear, I’m certain about those M4 designations, and the M5s are an educated guess.

Mac16,3 - Apple M4 4412 MHz (10 cores) - ? iMac

Mac16,5 - Apple M4 Max 4507 MHz (16 cores) - ? 14" M4 MacBook Pro ?
Mac16,6 - Apple M4 Max 4507 MHz (16 cores) - ? 16" M4 MacBook Pro ?

Mac16,7 - Apple M4 Pro 4504 MHz (14 cores) - ? 14" M4 MacBook Pro ?
Mac16,8 - Apple M4 Pro 4507 MHz (14 cores) - ? 16" M4 MacBook Pro ?

Mac16,10 - Apple M4 4405 MHz (10 cores) - Mac Mini
Mac16,11 - Apple M4 Pro 4510 MHz (14 cores) - Mac Mini

Mac16,12 - ? MBA M4 13"?
Mac16,13 - ? MBA M4 15" ?

Mac17,1 - Studio M4 Max
Mac17,2 - Studio M4 Ultra

No Mac Studio M4 Ultra but a 30” M5 iMac and a 30” M5Pro iMac. Sorry that fails the sniff test on too many levels.

Probably that will solve even for the M4 Max since the 14" Mbp can at some extend
Oh, it definitely would, given the expected interior volume of a 32" iMac. But my comment was meant humorously--I've no idea if Apple will be releasing a large iMac in 2025.

There won’t be a 32” iMac. The cost of the display alone would make this a very expensive machine, and the iMac has always been the budget option if you leave out the weird iMac Pro. Who would buy an all in one at the same price as a loaded Studio+Display? You’re talking 7-8K for an iMac.

Here's the most recent info. It appears that they have not used separate identifiers (like they did for M3) for the two variants of Max with different memory bandwidths. So it's a return to the M1/M2 format, in the sense that the high-end Max is double the Pro. In M3, the low-end Max was double the Pro.

The remaining, unclaimed M4 identifiers are Mac16,9, Mac16,12, and Mac 16,13. My projections for those haven't changed!

M2

Mac14,2 :: M2 100 (8/8, 8/10) MacBook Air 13"
Mac14,15 :: M2 100 (8/10) MacBook Air 15"

Mac14,3 :: M2 100 (8/10) Mac mini
Mac14,12 :: M2 Pro 200 (10/16) Mac mini

Mac14,5 :: M2 Pro 200 (10/16, 12/19) MacBook Pro 14"
Mac14,9 :: M2 Max 400 (12/30, 12/38) MacBook Pro 14"

Mac14,6 :: M2 Pro 200 (12/19) MacBook Pro 16"
Mac14,10 :: M2 Max 400 (12/30, 12/38) MacBook Pro 16"

Mac14,7 :: M2 100 (8/10) MacBook Pro 13"

Mac14,8 :: M2 Ultra 800 (24/60, 24/76) Mac Pro

Mac14,13 :: M2 Max 400 (12/30, 12/38) Mac Studio
Mac14,14 :: M2 Ultra 800 (24/60, 24/76) Mac Studio

Yes that may make sense, but I will be a little surprised if there are no M4 MacBook Airs.

Either way, M4 or M5, I’ll be ready next summer - Back To School Education Promotion - for a new MacBook Air to replace our 2017 non-Retina i5 MacBook Air.

Wouldn’t it be more likely for the MBA to remain on M4, while the Studio to be on M5 architecture?

Not necessarily. We saw the iPad Pro jump to M4, so the Air could do that and return to being the flagship for a new ASi gen instead of the laggard. There’s also the fact that, so far, we haven’t had any member of the family ‘jump the line’ just yet. It’s been Mx > Pro/Max > Ultra (for some) for M1-M3 so far so I assume we’ll continue that way.

I know Gurman is saying that (M4 Airs in early 2025), but if this identifiers list is gospel (not saying it is, but if it is), then it’s hard to find anything other than M5 Airs that work.

The only one I can think of is Mac16,12 and Mac16,13 for M4 Airs then…

Mac16,9 :: M4 Pro iMac Retina 30"

Not likely, but it’s all I can think of. Mac17,1 and Mac17,2 would then be the M5-generation Mac Studio. Mac Pro would come later.

What if… lol:

Mac16,9: M4 Max Mac Studio
Mac16,12: M4 MacBook Air 15”
Mac16,13: M4 MacBook Air 13”

So no M4 Ultra Mac Studio, nor Mac Pro.

Mac17,1 and Mac17,2: whatever that was rumored. The 12” MBP, the foldable 20”, the plastic edu MBA, what have you.
