You have to wait and see and check once it is installed, theoretical maximum speeds are not always reflected in practice. Also, generally the larger the drives the faster they are. You can see that from the Sabrent 2242 specs, the 1TB drive is faster than the 512GB and 2TB units are faster than the 1 TB.

Then there is a max speed which is sometimes not maintained for a longer period. I have a very fast Samsung X5 with TB3 connection to my Mac Mini 2018 - It can be very very fast, as fast as the internal drive, but on long continued use it can throttle down substantially.

In my experience the difference between modern fast SSDs, say between 2400 and 2000 MB/s really is very difficult to notice in normal use.

That said, I would love to hear from Jabo the speeds he is getting from that Crucial P1 and whether it is a 2242.

I am waiting for the adaptor too, probably will not be here before mid June.

I am interested to see how your installation goes, the actual installation process as well as how the laptop responds afterwards.

Have you done BlackMagic speed tests to be able to compare with the results afterwards?

Please post a detailed report of the process of fitting the adaptor and the new SSD

How are you going to clone your new SSD? You might be best off with a m.2 NVMe to USB C case and use Carbon Copy or SuperDuper to clone your new SSD.

Keep us updated, please.

Yes, I think we are all waiting upon China mail! I was quoted mid June through early July - That said, I have quite often received things a bit sooner than planned. Mine is through eBay.

Salv, when were you told it would be delivered?

Yes, I took a screenshot with blackmagic of my 128gb ssd which has a W / R speed of 750mb / 2100 mb. I have not yet decided whether to buy an adapter like this to clone or perform a clean installation from scratch with a bootable usb stick. As a cloning software I would like to use Acronis True Image. As for shipping the adapter from china yesterday, my shipment was cleared through customs and left China, so I think that in 7/10 days or sooner the adapter should arrive. If I can I will make a video of the assembly procedure and a speed comparison with the old ssd.

That all sounds good. A clean install is always the best if you do not need to transfer over too much. If you already have an Acronis True Image license, sounds good. If not, SuperDuper, that has been a essential Mac tool for decades, has a free basic version that does a full clone.

yes, SuperDuper is also good ... honestly I have only one perplexity ... as the adapter is manufactured in China but it is not known who produces it, there are no guarantees on its durability or if it is fully compatible with the SSDs (in the sense that it doesn't make them work in less than optimal conditions).

Yes, that is what we get for $10... I would not go ahead if I can't get the original connector and SSD off with out damaging it - Just in case...

I have similar sourced adaptors to fit NVMe's to a Mac Mini 2014 and a MacBook Air 2015 - Both have worked perfectly. So fingers crossed.

I also have this NVME adapter on my Mac Mini late 2014. Right now I'm installing the system on my new Sabrent 512GB NVME 2242 received today.
But the transfer speed will not be the same because this Mac Mini only has PCIE 2 x 2 lanes and only reaches R/W 700 MB/s

I have a Sabrent Rocket 256GB NYMe 2282 in my Mac Mini late 2014, with a single adaptor. Others have an adaptor to the Apple style NVMe and then a second adaptor to change it to M-Key.

Yes, the speeds achieved are a lot lower as it is 2 lanes. I get about 700 and something read and write. Still better than a Sata III 6 SSD and so much easier to install. I have one in the Mini too, but installing it is a lot more complicated and fiddly.

Hey,

I've just installed the Sabrent Rocket 1TB 2242 using one of the adapters i saw on here and so far so good. Feels like it runs a little hotter but other than that no problems so far. Hybernate/Sleep all work fine and the drive is quicker than the original. saved me about 500 quid on an apple drive so happy days.

I'm still waiting to receive my adapter, I will install same item as yours but in only 512GB.

You will be more than happy, been using it for a couple of hours tonight and battery performance is unchanged. Heat has also calmed down now and feels the same as before not sure if the drive indexes or something when first setup making it heat up a bit.

Paul, thanks for that promising info, I am planning on a 1TB too, to get the extra speed as well as the extra storage.

Good to know that all is good so far and that temperatures are not significantly higher. Do you have any fan control software installed, like Macs Fan Control, to see what temperatures you are seeing.

I think we would all be interested in hearing how the actually installation went, specially if you had any issue removing the original SSD as I would like the option of reinstalling it if ever needed.

Did you do a clean install or a clone of your original drive?

Have you tested speeds with Black Magic?

Thanks

Hi,

For a bit of background this is the first Mac I've owned and I've had it for 2 weeks so I'm 100% newbie. The installation was really easy I just followed the instructions from the video on this thread. Clean install and from taking the first screw out to finalising Catalina took about 40 minutes. It was easier than I thought TBH and think its probably a confidence thing that makes us worry it will be difficult. original SSD came out without problems.

I have no Mac fan control and no idea what it is lol. I will have a look into it and report back with any worthwhile feedback. I did run black magic though, again I don't really know what I'm doing but I've attached the images lower speed being the original Apple drive.

hope this helps.

edit: added a system screenshot showing device in use :)

Thanks a lot for all that info, Paul.

That is a decent increase in speed, as well as capacity. Probably means that the added cost of the 1TB unit is worth it for the speed too.

I have installed a very well known little program 'Mac Fan Control' on all my Macs, it sits in the MenuBar and you can see fan speed and temps.

To Catalina users who did the update to version 10.15.5, is it working well? Any problem?

Hi, A little review of my experience with the installation af 1708A adapter and Sabrent Rocket 2242 512 GB SSD. I have drilled out the 2230 thread on the 1708A adapter, which was quite easy. The SSD was quite difficult to get mounted in the adapter, but after some gentle "force", the SSD slided in. mounting in the computer was quite easy as there are a lot of guides for opening the mac and replacing the SSD. I did not prepare the SSD i any way, and had some problems erasing the SSD. After some research, found that i had not partitioned the Sabrent SSD. (so upper left corner in Disk utility, select show all drives) Sabrent can then be selected and GUID partition map can be selected. all in all, it took about a couple of hours to get sorted. Ran some test black magic speed test. write about (1200 Mb/s) read about (1300 mb/s) original drive 650 write and 2400 read. my concern is that the mac is now slower from boot, which untill now also has been confirmed. everything works fine, and i have not noticed anything different. I would however recommend not to use the Sabrent 512 GB, as the read speed is 700 Mb/s slower then the 1 TB Imagine read with 1TB would be about 2200 mb/s then it would be acceptable compared to origiginal SSD. N.B. Also remember to manually activate the TRIM function via the terminal command (there is a lot of youtube movies in this matter)

Please could you add a link to the bay source of that adaptor?

Could you also explain why you had to drill out the Apple SSD? I have seen this video and the guy gets out the original SSD without an issue. I have a MacBook Pro 2017 with 128GB without Touch Bar (2 TB3) and would love to update to, maybe, 1 or 2 TB.

This guy gets the Apple SSD out okay, though then uses a 2282 NVMe which obviously does not fit too well.
The Sabrent Rocket 2242 has ram block on both sides. Therefore the Thead of 2230 mounting is in the way. But really, it is very easy to drill out, as it will break of as soon as you start drilling

Very good review, thank you very much.
I have personally bought the 512 model because I don't need more capacity, I already have my desktops. Plus, this one is half the price of the 1TB model.
I hope that huge loss of reading speed does not make me think about to upgrade... I have to see because still waiting for the adapter.

what are the other SSDs that can be used instead of Sabrent's? It seems their 1TB SSD is now out of stock, has someone tried any other ssd?

In theory any equivalent M.2 PCIe NVMe M-Key in the 2242 format, the only one that I found was the Sabrent, but at least one person has installed a Toshiba. The Sabrent uses Toshiba NAND chips.

Just be careful that it is the right type.

If you find another make, please let us know here.
