That looks like another route, though not sure what the final cost would be for single 256 or 512GB unit.

If you do get one, please update here how it goes.

Finally, I have decided to go for this adapter

The link I sent you did not have the 1to one
I will find a 2242 ssd afterwards
The Sabrent is available in 1tb in UK so I will probably go for this one

I think you have chosen the better route and I will be going the Sabrent 1TB route too, almost certainly. I would probably manage with 500GB, but there is a big speed step between 500GB and 1TB

Keep us all updated.

In theory any equivalent M.2 PCIe NVMe M-Key in the 2242 format, the only one that I found was the Sabrent, but at least one person has installed a Toshiba. The Sabrent uses Toshiba NAND chips.

Just be careful that it is the right type.

If you find another make, please let us know here.

This one from WD with 5 years warranty seems to be an option even if limited to 500gb

Yes, it could be. But more expensive than the Sabrent that I can get at €89.99 tax & shipping included from Amazon, with a easy return policy. As opposed to €113.60 & shipping.

In any case I would prefer to go the 1TB route as read & write speeds are always faster with bigger SSD, so that I keep similar speeds to the original Apple SSD.

But it would be good if there was a wider variety of drives to choose from.

I think I will use the 1tb Sabrent
When I received the adapter, I will put the Sabrent in a external ssd enclosure.
I will use Carbon Copy Cloner 5 to clone my current ssd to the Sabrent
I will open the MBP and remove the original one and replace it with the Sabrent
Boot on the new SSD.

Does that look ok?

That sounds a perfect solution.

You have an external NVMe M-Key external enclosure? Which one? USB or USB-C? Asking as I will probably need one too.

I've been able to source a similar WD drive 500gb (because no one has 1TB for some reason) from a local dealer and just waiting for the adapter now. I'll post the results here once I get the adapter. The adapter is expected to arrive by the end of July (worst case)

I bought the same as the one my brother is already using: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ORICO-Encl...d=1&keywords=usb+c+nvme&qid=1591879810&sr=8-5

You can get it cheaper from China: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/32998009158.html

Have a nice day

EDIT 1: I have received the Sabrent SSD and put it in the enclosure

I cloned it with CCC and successfully boot on it

Only waiting for the adaptor now

Thanks

Obviously you are happy with it
After running some benchmark on the Sabrent in the external enclosure, it reaches the maximum of the enclosure which is 10Gbps

It is ok to use it like this until I get the adaptor, I don't really need to move my MBP recently :)

My adapter finally arrived today and I purchased the Sabrent 2242 mentioned above also which is due on Wednesday. In order to cut down costs, instead of ordering a caddy for the Sabrent SSD, could I clone my disk to an external hard drive, install the SSD on my mac and then copy the cloned external drive back on to the blank SSD inside the system?

Great news.

I don't see why that should not work. The only small downside is that you can't do an external boot from the Sabrent to check all is well before you do the change. But it should work fine.

What size of the Sabrent are you getting 500GB, 1TB or 2TB?

Could you do some before and after BlackMagic speed tests?

I think I‘m going for the 512Gb sabrent.
The 512gb model costs about 65€ vs the 1tb model about 160€, so the lower speed doesn‘t matter THAT much.

Do you guys have an idea how to install macos completely new without any old drives etc?
I bought a A1708 but theres no ssd in it..

I opted for the 1TB option. I'll do some BlackMagic tests before and after for you!

I may be back for help regarding the disk utility and restoring from external to internal lol!

sounds like that is the way to go. Thank you very much for the detailed reply. :) What do you mean drilling out the NVME stand ??

Theres two posts that you screw into to hold the ssd in place, we're using the furthest one for the 2242 size, but the second one is in the way as the Sabrent is double sided with its flash... so you can either file it down 5mm, or what i did was slowly drill it down so the bottom had clearance.

Also the adapter is found on ebay.

Sorry i havent kept up with this since i upgraded and sold this. Open for more questions.

Thanks, I will appreciate those tests.

Giving it further thought, I am not sure the exact steps that you can take to do it that way, as the Sabrent will not have a macOS installed when you want to do the clone.

Maybe you should start another topic on this, either here or in the macOS Catalina forum?

I have just received my adapter from sintech. The adapter looks to be very high quality in construction and material.

I have cloned my original drive using CCC on the Sabrent 1TB connected through USB enclosure.
I put the Sabrent 1TB in the Sintech adapter and put it inside the Mac.
Booted without any issues.

Here is a BlackMagic test

The sintech adapter doesn't have this issue
