Hey guys, question will Zeus (still) work as a program to flash a rom I have for the GTX650 on Sierra or do I have to still have that card flashed in a PC? I'm in the process of ordering and receiving upgraded parts for a Mac Pro 1, 1. The video card was the most difficult part, but I finally found a rom for the card that fit my budget and offered decent performance.

Edit:
After more reviewing, Sierra is not yet, (if ever will be) able to be on a 1, 1.
El Capitan is what I'll stick with.

Flashing a GTX650 won't do anything for you on a 1,1 anyway.

Yup, found a Rom!

How would it not? I did finally, find a rom, would it not allow for more functionality with it?

Not on a 1,1, no. The newer Nvidia cards have ROMs that are EFI64 only. You have to go pretty far back to find an Nvidia card that supports EFI32. I could be mistaken, but I think the 8800GT and GT120 were the last.

AMD is a better bet for you if you want a compatible ROM. At the very least you can go up to 5870 and maybe later, but I don't know much about AMD cards and their ROMs or how to flash them.

I'm surprised you found a 650 ROM, would you mind sharing where that was?

But, if I am installing and flashing to 2, 1 with 8 core and enabling the 64 bit...?

MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 both have 32-bit EFI. As ActionableMango stated, the last Nvidia video cards that had 32 bit EFI firmware were the 8800 GT cards. Everything after has been 64 bit. 64 bit EFI firmware will not give you boot screens.

But, isn't that what the gpu rom i have, is for?

How does it not work? My research has seemingly mislead me...
What will the rom flash do, then?

A Kepler series Nvidia ROM flash will do nothing that I am aware of on a 1,1 or 2,1. In fact MVC alluded to it actually making things worse.

Flashing a GPU ROM can do quite a bit--that's what you probably saw in your research. But not all possible combinations are compatible. There is a minefield of exceptions, and newer Nvidia cards on older Mac Pros is one of them. You can do older Nvidia cards and many AMD cards for your 1,1.

No.

alright, lol, back to square one again.
Yah, I thought there was firmware cause I saw on the drop down menu OSX for the 600 series cards, but it wasn't so.
Thanks for the help.
Any specific ones, that you know of, off hand, that have the ability to function like I wish, that are not more than $120 (new/...used)?

Ok, soo... this 7950, flashed, WILL work? lol

Hey friends. I've searched around the site with regards to my question and found some good info but wanted to pose it here. I have a Mac Pro 3,1 and a very generous friend who has given me his EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ (model number 04G-P4-3687-KR, link to product).

I've seen posts like this one which suggest that I'm fine to go get a 6pin power cable and plug it in to the 8pin port on the card, along with the other 6pin port. Has anyone had experience with this? What are my other options for powering the card - it came with a 2x 6pin to 1x 8-pin cable, can I just plug that in and leave the card's 6-pin port empty? Or should I kindly thank my friend, return the card, and look elsewhere?

I just wanna play Civ 6 and my old 8800GT has finally been bested... thanks in advance!

it may work with two 6-pin to 6-pin but you may need 1 6-pin to 6pin & 1 6-pin to 8-pin.

Thanks for the help. How concerned should I be that the card is too powerful, that it might try and draw too much power and potentially damage other parts of the machine?

For that specific card there is no concern at all. Just use two 6-pin Mac cables like these. You do not need an 8-pin cable or adapter.

The cables that come with a PC card are for PC and cannot be used in a Mac. However, if you have one or two cables on your existing video card, you can reuse them for this card.

Great, thanks again orph and ActionableMango - cable is in the mail!

You said that there's no concern for this specific card - I don't doubt you, but how did you arrive at that conclusion? Is there something I should look for on spec sheets in the future, or do you know this from experience?
