@phone5g if your looking at a gtx680 and dont need boot screens (vary few ppl need them) then the gtx 670 is a valid option or a GTX760 there both cheaper used.

also if your on osx10.12 then an RX 460 may also be worth a look, 4GBvram no power plugs wont make much heat or sound + warranty and not far of the used price of a GTX680 (or may be cheaper)

if it was me unless you find a relay cheep GTX6xx/7xx card id look at the RX460 (if you can use osx 10.12)

I have a MacPro 4,1 flashed to 5,1 with a GTX 980Ti. It was working fine in Mavericks, but when I updated to Sierra I can't get the web driver to work. I just did the update so I have build 16B2657. I can get the latest 367.15.10.15f01 driver to install by editing my SystemVersion.plist to 16B2555. I revert back to 16B2657 after install and reboot. At first I get a message: "The default OS X Graphics Driver is now being used because the NVIDIA Web Driver 267.15.10.15f01 is not compatible with your current OS."

I edited the Info.plist file in the NVDAStartupWeb.kext to activate the driver for my build which stops the message about the compatible version. However, when I attempt to change to the web driver using the Nvidia Utility and reboot it reverts back to the stock driver.

When I run diagnostics on the kext file I get a code signing failure:

MacPro:Extensions $ sudo kextutil -t NVDAStartupWeb.kext
Diagnostics for /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext:
Code Signing Failure: code signature is invalid
kext-dev-mode allowing invalid signature -67030 0xFFFFFFFFFFFEFA2A for kext "/System/Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext"
kext signature failure override allowing invalid signature -67030 0xFFFFFFFFFFFEFA2A for kext "/System/Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext"
Invalid signature -67030 for kext <OSKext 0x7fad1965cec0 [0x7fffb2505c30]> { URL = "file:///System/Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext/", ID = "com.nvidia.NVDAStartupWeb" }

SIP is disabled.

I've tried repairing Kext permissions using KextUtility and reinstalling the kext to /S/L/E using KextBeast. I don't think it's a permission issue, but perhaps because of my edit to the Info.plist it has invalidated the signature and it just won't stick.

I'm hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction of what to try next.

Here are some directions to a workaround... HERE

That's actually the exact thread that I followed to get the driver to install. The issue I'm having is once I get the driver to install, I can't get the Web Driver to actually load. I believe it's related to my editing the Info.plist in the NVDAStartupWeb.kext. That seems to invalidate the code signing and I don't think kext-dev-mode=1 is actually working in Sierra.

I don't have any ideas what to do to troubleshoot other than rolling back to El Capitan and trying to get 10.12.1 build 16B2555 by downloading from the web (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1897?locale=en_US)

Can someone confirm the web version of 10.12.1 is build 16B2555?

Any other suggestions?

Are there any other cards besides the GTX 680 that are user flashable? What are considered better cards for the money if you are ok without the boot screen?

Seems like GTX680s demand a premium...

Yeah, I've wondered about that. Sometimes I wonder if the 680 is holding its price on the used market entirely due to its Mac flashability. It seems absurd that there could be so much demand for that, but on the other hand there's absolutely nothing special about the 680 to PC owners to explain the price from that side.

Anyway, there are many AMD cards that are flashable but the process is more difficult. R9 280X seems to be a popular one.

the GTX 670 is worth a look, there getting cheep close to GTX680 speed and faster than GTX760
i think the easiest cards to use are
nvidia GTX660/670/680/760/770 (all work on native drivers and the GTX670 are at good prices on ebay)
ATI the rx460 works in osx10.12 no problems i think, close in speed to a gtx760
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/amd-radeon-rx-460,review-33628-4.html
think the ATI rx470 is the fastest new card at a mo (osx10.12)

ps on gumtree in the uk you can get GTX680's much cheaper there's one near me for £60

Is it possible to get 4K (3840x2160) on a 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 and 660GTX?

Recently got an 27" LG 4K monitor (amazing) but in the system preferences, there isn't even an option for 3840. Max res is 3200x1800. "Default for display" is 1920x1080, which looks great, but wastes real estate. Is the OS using all the pixels but scaling it for readability? Is there a limitation I'm not aware of? Is it simply not possible with an older machine? Drivers?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere, I've searched and look through some of the 140 pages of this thread, but can't find a definitive answer.

Are people having a good experience with macOS 10.12.1 and the 367.15.10.15f01 driver? I sometimes have this problem when waking the computer from sleep where I can't click on anything for about 10 seconds (but I can move the mouse). Then suddenly controls comes back and all the input I made get performed as if saved in memory.

Can somebody explain to me the differences between all these subsets of graphics cards? For example, the GTX 970 has a ASUS STRIX, an MSI, EVGA, ZOTAC... I can't figure out how these are different and which one to go with.

I'm looking to add a GTX 970 to a 2009 Mac Pro to speed up renders in Adobe Premiere. Too many options and I just feel odd picking any of them because I don't understand the difference.

Those are different manufacturers. They all make their own versions of GTX 970 graphics cards with different GPU coolers and are often overclocked a bit.

Hi,
i have updated my CUDA driver to 8.0.51
but when i try to update the GPU driver 10.10.14v 310.42.25f02 to 346.03.15f01 or 367.15.10.05f01 the procedure give me this error:

Mac OS X version is not compatible
Mac OS X version 10.11.6 (15G1108) is not supported with this package. Please see NVIDIA’s website for further driver information.

Why?

thank's
