If (s)he already update the OS, and no OOTB card around (not necessary Mac EFI card, any OOTB card can do the job), it's possible to use remote control to install and activate the web driver.

This is the current process I shared or target mode could do the job.

This is the current process I shared or target mode could do the job.

Target disk mode can't help (directly) UNLESS (s)he pull out the drive and completely do the OS upgrade from another Mac.

The reason is once OS update is done on the cMP. The web driver will be disabled. And target disk mode cannot help to set the required PRAM parameter to enable the web driver.

Therefore, either pull out the drive. Do the update from another Mac. Or use remote control to re-active the web driver.

Target disk mode can only help to install the web driver, but cannot activate it.

However, (s)he can setup remote control via target disk mode, pull the hard drive back into cMP, and then further use remote control to activate the web driver.

Hello. Have a quick question.
I finally upgraded my Mac Pro 5,1 to high sierra from El Capitan. I have a non flashed gtx980ti card that I took out during upgrade and used my original gt120 for upgrade. Installed 10.13.5 and latest nvdia and cuda drivers. Remote access is enabled as well. Did I miss anything before I remove gt120 and put back the gtx980? Do I need to disable sip and do pram reset?

Thank you

i suggest you, to keep the gt120 plugged in one of the 4x slots while the maxwell card is in the first 16x...it worked perfect for me all the time when the fruit company release a new update and you have to wait for a new web driver.
just plug the ( DVI ) cable to the 980 and enjoy as long as the web driver is up-to-date.

NEVER perform PRAM reset unless absolutely require. This will disable the Nvidia web driver.

From what you described, you are good to go.

Anyway, you can install the 980Ti with the GT120 still there. And only remove the GT120 if the 980Ti is correctly identified in the OS.

Thank you. Can’t keep both. All Slots are in use.

If you are taking about installing OS upgrade / driver. I don't think you really need all other 3 PCIe slots for just the "update". Most likely some of them can be temporary offloaded (e.g. USB 3.0 card).

If you really want to play safe for the GPU driver. You should swap out one of the non necessary PCIe card. But if you don't want to do that. Then simply swap the 980Ti back in is fine. In worst case, just perform a hard shutdown, and swap the GT120 back in for trouble shooting.

However, as long as you can see the web driver is activated from the GT120. You should be good to go.

I did the upgrade from 10.11 to 10.13 using gt120 card. Confirmed everything was working and Just swapped the cards. Screens are not working. I remotely connected to the mac. Nvidia driver is active but i get no video on both screens.
Any suggestions on what I can try?

I think i see the issue. Looks like the card didn't get detected correctly. THis is what i see in the about this mac video

When you remote control the Mac, what did you see in the system info (graphic and PCI sections).

Is there anything (for the web driver) in the security panel waiting you to "allow"?

[doublepost=1530465072][/doublepost]Also, what you see in the Nvidia driver manager control panel?

reseated the card. checked the power connectors. all good. Card lights up inside the mac. 8 pin and 6 pin cables are connected as well

Can you confirm if the driver is really loaded properly?

In the Extensions page, use Version or Last Modified to sort the list. And then locate the Nvidia stuff.

Did you try recycle (OFF then ON) the web driver, or re-install the web driver?

Also, Do you know if your SIP and Gatekeeper are enabled or not?

Did you try the terminal command "sudo nvram nvda_drv=1" yet?

Didn't try recycling it yet. Don't know if sip and gatekeeper are enabled. Didn't try terminal commands yet.

for the toggle - do I switch it to Native, reboot then switch it to nvdia or do it without reboot?

Better with reboot
[doublepost=1530468823][/doublepost]If nothing work, try re-enable BOTH SIP and Gatekeeper, then check if anything in the security panel.

toggle loaded the nvdastartupweb but its still showing nvida chip and screens are not working.

To reinstall:
use the uninstaller, remove, reboot. download latest drivers and install?

just did it. waiting for reboot

to enable SIP can i do it via command R without swapping cards? Also should i run
sudo nvram nvda_drv=1 ?

Driver reinstalled, extension loaded but still no video

graphics still shows nvidia chip model

Card is good. I accidently rebooted into 10.11 installation that i had on my clone and it booted into 2 screens. now my primary ssd is not showing up and booting into 10.13. 10.11 install also doesn't see it. crap
[doublepost=1530472980][/doublepost]Ok . Took out one pci card and installed GT120. Booted back to 10.13.5 and I see gt120 listed correctly but gtx980 is still dead.

Any ideas on what else i can try?

I'm also unable to get into recovery. I press command +R combo after restart and it doesn't go into recovery menu so i can't enable sip either

Ok got recovery to work. Enabled SIP and enabled gatekeeper. Nothing is showing in security. GT120 shows fine and gtx980 still shows as nvidia chip . Anything else to try?
