From reading the story I don't think Skypeout calls will work over 3G, will it? Can any one confirm please - I am no T-Mo!? Just got to see how they are restricting it - as a policy or something technical, inside of the app or the phone.

AT&T network is another thing though - even if it does work, the call quality is going to be absolutely crappy.

Apple restricted VOIP to only Wi-Fi.

So it's an app limitation. If fring submitted their application working on 3G, then Apple would have rejected it.

Why Free?

Why is this app totally free though? Seems like people would actually pay for something like this if it works?

Just prayin it's not a "all your passwords are belong to us" plan! :D

Very BIG bug in FRING,

It will not accept mail adress like name.lastname@gmail.com , i mean that it will not accept the dot ".".
Very annoying for those who have this kind of mail.

Yep -confirmed. I wasted about 10 minutes trying to figure out what was the mistake - then I tried one without a dot in it and it worked.

Actually, if you're using Gmail, 'name.lastname@gmail.com' is the same as 'namelastname@gmail.com'. From Wikipedia [and verified by myself]:

Gmail does not recognize dots as characters within a username. Instead, it will ignore all dots in a username.[26] For instance, the account google@gmail.com receives mail sent to goo.gle@gmail.com, g.o.o.g.l.e@gmail.com, etc. Likewise, the account goo.gle@gmail.com receives mail sent to google@gmail.com. This can be useful in setting filters for incoming mail. However, when signing in, it is necessary to include any dots used in the creation of the account.

And just so I understand from reading the website, you can only use VoIP to call other fring users; you can't call landlines/mobile numbers without some sort of VoIP minutes provider (a la Skype). Is that right?

EDIT: Looked around, and answered my own question.

(It's yes, btw.)

Macrumors gave you the link on the iPhone tab. Just click on the icon on the right side where it is shown as a new application!

Yea, duh. I'm at work though (ie not at home with iTunes) - I was trying to download it through the iPhone app store...on the iPhone :p

funny... the screenshot shows the fring call working while 3G is active. ;)

should work with the new iPod Touch and a Mic.

arn

Ahh, those lucky developers...Restrict VOIP to Wi-Fi for the App Store...allow it on 3G for them xD.

Skype voice is good but with a delay.
That dot in the username part of gmail addresses is immaterial. You can leave it out and the message will be delivered correctly.

Edit: I posted before I got to the end of the thread - I see this was also verified by another user a few posts up.

Awesome

Awesome, love it, been waiting for REAL Skype out since the iPhone came out. Just made my first Skype Out call on it and was very pleased. The interface works although I hope it gets a bit prettier :) Yay, yay, yay! I do happy dance! :)

Heres a working link if you are on your Mac and don't mind adding it through iTunes http://www.fring.com/download/iphone/

I've got fring to connect to my Asterisk box at home. It seems rather buggy, though. Sometimes calls terminate immediately after dialing. Audio quality is poor and a little choppy. Audio out only through the earpiece, I haven't found a way to enable the speaker.

Hopefully they'll clean up the bugs, improve audio quality, and add speaker support :)

I just called internationally (I'm in Barcelona and I called my parents in the States), the quality was great! It was even better than if I called with my normal cell phone connection. It's great! 2 cents a minute calling from Spain to the US. Amazing! :)

For some reason I cannot make any Skype Out calls. After it starts to ring, it immediately says Call Terminated. I've tried 2 different Skype accounts and they both have the same problem. I can make calls out fine through Cellular though. Also, I can dial out fine via Skype on my Mac. I've tried unsubscribing and re-subscribing Skype a few times to no avail.

Anyone else having this trouble or have any suggestions?

*EDIT* Just in case anyone else is having this issue... I was able to dial out using Skype Out after adding +1 to the number. It seems you have to have the country code before the number.

The good news is I was able to sign onto Skype...the bad news is that a couple test calls had completely unusable voice quality, whereas using Skype on my desktop on the same WiFi connection is perfect, even for video chat.

The call history also seems wrong, since it lists all the calls as exactly the same number of seconds and I'm sure they weren't. It also seems to be losing the connection to the fring service, but that might be their servers getting overwhelmed with everyone playing with it, which has been an issue before when new apps have launched.

Fring is awesome. Just trying it out now and I love it! The call quality is excellent as well. I couldnt ask for anything better! Just fix the email period bug and it will be perfect...
