I wish you had the option of dialing numbers after the call has been placed, like going through automated prompts. It would be handy to check voicemail while overseas!

"As expected, Fring for iPhone only enables users to contact other Fring user’s. You cannot dial landlines or mobiles of which don’t own a Fring account."
- [This information appears to be incorrect]

It is noted in order to use Fring as a VoIP service, you are required to buy Skype talk credits.
Credits must be bought directly from Skype.com and are not available for purchase through Fring.

On a side note, for whoever searched my blog for the search term 'Fring' recently (you know who you are), and it returned nil -

dtmf tones don't work

Unfortunately DTMF tones (also known as touch tones) don't work. It doesn't generate any tones at all. This is a bummer. I usually call international almost daily using calling cards which need touch tones to work. Guess i'll have to wait for some other skype application to come by.

I used to have the windows mobile version of skype, and touch tones never worked properly on there too. But at least that generated the tones; just that the other end could never identify those. This application doesn't even try :(.

Continuing Fears over Apple Policies

As someone who really loves my Apple hardware I'm a bit shocked at my immediate thought when hearing fring was available...

"Must get it before Apple pulls it from the AppStore"

Apple are beginning to undermine my trust in their ability to run a company that takes care of all Stakeholders.

I know there are always clashes - but at the moment competition and client wishes take a back seat at Apple.

Fring is awesome. Just trying it out now and I love it! The call quality is excellent as well. I couldnt ask for anything better! Just fix the email period bug and it will be perfect...

Surely this has been around for ages my wife has been using fring & skype on her iphone for about a month, this has only made news because of it's app store appearance ? Have i missed something ?

It's basically a mobile client to serve the existing Fring community. I'm sure you can persuade your family and/or relatives to sign up for a free Fring account. ;)

Anyone having problems getting Fring to accept your Username/password for AIM? I've tried over and over again; I know they're both right.

EDIT: Now it works? I have no idea what it was doing in the beginning.

Not true. I just called my dad that's in the US. I called his mobile phone and yeah, trust me, he does not have fring installed on it. It worked perfectly. I also called my sister that's in the states and she has a blackberry that doesn't have fring on it either... and yeah, worked perfectly again.

Don't know where that paragraph came from but it's not true.

I'm able to dial a mobile user that does not have a Fring account just fine. Well, the call completes. There's a huge delay on the call... could be the wireless network I'm on at the moment. I'm also able to call my work (landline) which I know we don't have a Fring account.

*EDIT* What ^ they said.

Well for one if you make a lot of international calls then VOIP saves a lot of $$$!

and also, if you're abroad but have wifi somewhere, you can use this for a lot less money than roaming would set you back.

Wait so you mean to tell me it is against TOS to tether your laptop to your iPhone but it is not against TOS to provide other ways to use the phone for voice calls?

Tethering a laptop increases load on the cellular network, sometimes a lot.

Phone calls over wifi reduces load on the cellular network.

VOIP will most likely not work at all unless you have a really good (stable, high bandwidth, decent latency) wifi connection to the internet. Any 3G connection will be ignored.

works but lots of Bugs!

It works for me now, I can make a skype call with wifi but if wifi is off I get a message saying 'no calls with 3G' (or sometimes the thing just does nothing).
The sound quality is OK only, sounds a bit muffled.
I had to try about 5 times to log into skype and after the 1st login it terminated my calls right after dialing. Logged out an in again and it works now.
It also crashed twice already.

You have to predial the country code to make a call (+1 for calls within the US)

anyways: FINALLY!!!! GREAT!!!

So wait ... do I have to have a Skype account first?
How does Skype even work? Do you have to pay a bill to them at the end of the month?

Why exactly would one use calling cards with skype? Skype is very cheap already without calling cards - actually which card are you using that is cheaper than skype out (and does not charge you automatically $5 a month, $1 a day C10 a minute and expires 156h after activation)?

Very BIG bug in FRING,

It will not accept mail adress like name.lastname@gmail.com , i mean that it will not accept the dot ".".
Very annoying for those who have this kind of mail.
Skype voice is good but with a delay.

You do realise that Gmail will still send you the email without the '.' ...?

Glad Fring is here, but it'd be nice to be able to use 3G as WELL as Wifi...hopefully a future update will include it.

Awesome when I could get it to work. Tried calling skype out to the states and kept getting call terminated right away, finally I was able to get through to a landline and I was very happy with the call quality. Also all my skype contacts are grayed out, even though I know some are on skype. Any of these issues happening to anyone else?

Using Skype over 3G would be trying to use your wireless provider's network
without them getting paid for the call ... no cell phone provider is going to allow that.
And don't forget that if they own the network, it's their network, and as long as they don't violate
your privacy rights, they can control the content on their network all they want to.
