That kinda sucks. Anybody know why it's pedestrian only?

Because there are enough jack****s looking at their phones while driving (texting etc) that having someone look down at their wrist instead of the road is an accident waiting to happen.

I am not saying that in a negative way towards your post, it's just that some people have no personal discipline or care/concern for others on the road.

Also, that watch is HUGE! (at least for me...) I would have to use one of those old pocket watch type scenarios. I think it will be a long wait for small wrist tech.

not sure it would be worth an extra $120/year on my wireless plan, but that's obviously going to vary person to person.

Obviously, as it's 1/2 that cost on Verizon. You make all valid points though.

I like it but i'm still in the honeymoon period, and I had a Gear 2 Neo before it that I really was ambivalent about. If I can get it to do more with my work Exchange server I'll be happy, right now I can't get it past just showing me the sender and subject on the notification.

Actually if you think about it, watch on wrist hand on steering wheel it's about inobtrusive as it gets. Can't think of a way short of it being attached to the wheel.

And if you think less of it as a watch, and more of it as a cuff it's not as bad. Pretend you're on home confinement and it's a GPS device :)

Anyone here get their Gear S to reply or create and email either from the email app or as a reply from a notification? XDA has some discussions on this but so far only 1 or 2 have gotten it to work.

Another Tip: Screenshots can be done by pressing/holding the home button and swiping right.

Anyone found a solution for protecting the screen? Don't want to bump my hand into something and shatter/scratch this puppy...

Yes. A couple of options popped up on Amazon over the weekend to ship on 11/14. I placed an order last night. $6 to $12 for front / front & Back. I bought the $12 one.

Update on Battery Life

HUGE day of use primarily with notifications and texting. Up and fully charged at 7am and now at 5:30pm I'm still at 48% battery.

  • On Wifi
  • BT Tethered
  • Clock off
  • Brightness at 60%
  • Vibrate/no sound
  • GPS Off - which I think is a HUGE key to success. No need to have it on unless needed anyway.

Very happy.

Do you think it runs GPS in background if no app using it is in foreground? From my observations with Nokia Here, if the watch is untethered [and without cellular service] it takes quite some time to get the lock on satellites if there are long enough breaks between using this app, which suggests GPS is "cold" in between.

Not sure. I just know that I more than doubled the battery life by turning it off with everything else the same. I even used it way more today too. 14hrs and I'm at 35% left.

How do I reply to a text received through Hangouts? I have Hangouts on my daughters wifi iPad Mini but when I get a message from her, the Gear S notifies me but I can't reply...just like with emails. Regular SMS messages I can reply of course.

No, you can not listen to the voice message on the Gear S. I have AT&T's Visual Voice mail set up and I get a notification that I have a message and it will list the contact name but it only offers to dismiss it or open it on the Note 3/My device.

Here's what I have installed so far:

Voice Memo
Samsung Wallet
Timer
Find my car
Yelp
TipCalculator
Gearam Music ID
Endomondo
TeraCalc

You can reply right from the phone, there is an icon you hit and it lets you reply. I even get the sent text show up on my phone.

I thought you meant you found out how to reply to hangouts from the Gear S. I can do it on my phone sure. Thanks.

Yes I was talking about replying on the Gear.

Edit: Just saw my post, I meant to say watch.

You can post on forums on your watch?

Yes, from Opera Mini browser using either little [but surprisingly accurate] keyboard or voice dictation. So, Gear S officially passes MacRumors Smartwatch Certification: if you can post on MR using your watch, it's a true smartwatch. Otherwise, it's smartwatch imposter. :D

Stand-alone with built-in 3G data or tethered to your phone? If stand-alone that would make it Dick Tracy MR level smartwatch.

It's a stand alone unit but tethers when in range. I used mine all day today calling on clients. Got over 100 email notifications 25+ text messages and tons of other notifications, made several calls and from 7am to now 5pm, I'm only down to 60% battery. It's getting better every day it seems.

So far the watch is working great with Google Voice, rings my watch number just like my other number on Voice. The only features I am really missing from my 360 is the ability to control my Google Play Music from my watch, and the ability to use Google voice commands directly from the watch. I'm not a huge fan of S-Voice yet. At this point I'd say its a great watch but you might find several faults with it if you really use Google services for everything. If you like tech its awesome to play with and looks cool, I plan to keep this watch and my 360, because I like different aspects of each.

Mine doesn't have a plan, and the browser cannot load the data using Bluetooth tether to the phone. So it must be standalone on WiFi to use Opera Mini. And I do always have my personal "surround" WiFi - my data plan is on AT&T Unite Pro mobile hotspot which is always with me.

----------

pdqgp, I think you're right about disabling GPS to improve the battery. I like to have my clock always on, and despite that, I'm seeing a very strong battery performance. This thing is awesome.

Can you put your Gear S on one hand, 360 on the other, turn on S-Voice and G-Voice, and try to make them talk to each other? That would be funny as hell. And a good test of their "intelligence".
