My review of the Note 5 after owning it a little over a week:

Build quality

The build quality was absolutely gorgeous on the Note 5. The M8 always held my crown as the best built phone but after holding the Note 5 in hand, I had to give the crown to the Note 5. Although it was incredibly slippery in hand, I had to buy a case so I could feel safe if a drop was to occur. Also you know the back of the device was a fingerprint magnet but all that was solved when I slapped the UAG case on it. Other than that, great built device and the best built android device to date.

Display

Here is another category where the Note 5 shines. As you know the Samsung devices are always top notch with there amoled displays and the Note 5 screen does not disappoint. Hands down, the best display and screen I have ever used on a cell phone period. No need to go into detail there.

Software

Here is where I have the love/hate relationship when it comes to Samsung devices and my biggest gripe when it came to the device. Yes, Touchwiz is scaled down again and is less heavy than before but TW is still the same resource hungry hog. I know this is to be expected when it comes to Samsung devices but ti irritates me that Samsung has not figured this out yet! The whole multitasking tidbit really doesn't matter to me since I'm not flipping through a bunch of apps on the regular basis but it is something that sits in the back of your mind. Yes for the time that I owned the device there was very very very minimal lag if any, sometimes on my AT&T version it will not register my screen clicks and lock up for a second and then proceed to making my screen selections (no it was not a bad device because I had to take back my first Note 5 and it did the same thing). Deep back in my mind and even though the experience was very lag free, I feel a little down the line this device will act just like any other Sammy device and slow up and lead to nothing but a frustrating experience. But I cannot assume that and wait to hear peoples thoughts after a few months of use. If you are leery about the TW experience, yes it is still there but scaled down more than before.

Camera

No need to get into great detail regarding the camera besides it is the best shooter on any cell phone to date imo. My time with it I didn't really get a chance to snap a lot of picture but the few I did snap came out flawless like any other latest Sammy devices camera. Like I said, can't really comment in detail regarding the camera since i didn't snap many pictures during my time with you but you should already know what to expect.

Battery Life

This is the most important factor when determining my main cell phone that I plan to use as a daily driver. The Note 5 battery life was just ok for me. I do not get caught up with everyones else saying my device gets this much SOT and all that because everyone is not going to get the same battery life based on a lot of deciding factor but for my personal use, the Note 5 battery just wasn't getting it done for me. I know there are a lot of tips and tricks with disabling this and turning this and that off, I know I have said this before and I will say it again, I personally feel that you should not have to turn features off of a "smartphone" in order to get decent battery life. Maybe I was a little spoiled coming from my 6 Plus where I would not have to even think about battery life because I know I have enough to do what I have to do throughout my day. With the Note 5, I felt that I had to be aware of what I was doing and always had to think about my battery potentially running out later in the day. I want a device where I can use all my features without disabling anything and still get great battery life and that is the main reason I went back to the 6 Plus. This first thing everyone says is turn off VoLTE, I happen to like VoLTE since I live here in Metro ATL and most of my friends have a VoLTE enabled device and its kind of refreshing to be on a high quality call when able.

S-Pen

This is also one of those features as in you either use it or you don't. I use my S-Pen from time to time but this is an area where I do not have to comment on because if you are use to the S-pen then you know its functions and uses. I love the addition to let you jot down notes while the screen is off, very clever idea. The S-pen is in a class of its own and if you use it then you will find it very beneficial.

Conclusion

The Note 5 is one and if not the best Android device that I have ever owned. TW is toned down to where you can actually tolerate it. It came down to a lot of basic functionality for me that I feel I have an better experience on iOS such as to how the Note handled group messages, the stock app is horrible and when apps like Google Messenger and Hangouts handle group messages well, they lag horrendously. Its little thing like that that irks me when it comes to Samsung devices. I feel if you like this device it will serve you well for a good while but for me personally, I had to cater to a few different needs where my iPhone excelled over the Note 5. You never know, Sammy may push some updates to the device to clear those little kinks out since the device is early in it life but if I'm going to pay $900 plus for a device, I simply want it to work without any worries!

Hangouts definitely lags. I don't know why Google can't get it fixed. It hangs when switching convos, it hangs when switching apps to hangouts, and it hangs when going to hangouts from a notification.

Mystery to me why.

Back to note 5...

Guys, I have actually done the same, went back to my 6 Plus. Note 5 was a great device but I couldn't get past the battery life and disabling features that shouldn't be disabled on a smartphone. I will stick with iOS for awhile and I will see what the new Nexus devices are like once they are released.

That sucks, so how bad is the battery life on the Note 5 ? Like something crappy getting only like 4.5h Screen On time ? Which would suck, and be useless.

Yeah I had the 6 Plus, and it was a beast for battery life, just never had to even think or worry one bit about the battery, you just knew it would last the entire day easily. But iOS for me just doesn't cut it, too limited and locked down, with zero customization. But if you like iOS and what Apple gives you, it is a great phone.

What are the rumors of the 6s Plus having a smaller battery ? I heard something about the new "S" models coming out will actually have smaller batteries, compared to last year, Apple is saying that iOS9 is more efficient, and that battery life will remain the same, even with these smaller batteries in the new iPhone S. Is that true ?

I am personally waiting for the Huawei Nexus, word is it will be the same size as the Note 5, and very thin bezels, with a 5.7" screen, and extremely similar looking metal body as the Note 5 / iPhone 6, and the Huawei will have a 3,400mAh size battery. And of course running stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Just a heads up lipo packs need about 10-15 charge cycles to really break in and battery life will get about 15-20% better after a few weeks.

Yeah I would average around 4hrs SOT but that is with me barely even using it seems like. I hate looking at my android device and literally watching the battery life go down. I just like to be worry free and not have to worry about my battery ever. yeah iOS is limited and locked down but I don't do much customizing anymore these days so I just want a device to work and to work well.

Yeah they are reporting a smaller battery in the new line coming up with iOS 9 having better battery optimization. What I am hoping since I may not switch to the 6S quick is that when iOS9 rolls around, the 6 Plus will have even better battery management.

Jesus, that irritates me :( Just because iOS9 will be more efficient, they will put in a smaller battery to keep the thinner profile going, and battery life won't be worse, and not really better, but around the same.

How bout, keep the same battery, and also do the optimizations to be more efficient, and then give us super great better battery life. WTF, why can't they do that. It's not just Apple either, Samsung does the same thing.

Sorry rant over. Just seems manufactures aren't cool with giving us super battery life, they don't care.

well I think the device will be a little thicker actually with them incorporating the Force Touch technology. That's why I am waiting until the storm is over to get the 6S because I want to see how everything plays out.

I will point out once again we are dealing with QHD. What device that has that gets the best battery life? If the Note 5 is reasonably close well ...

Need great battery life? Do not consider QHD devices, that is my take.
thats a great point. BTW.... i am getting about 5 to 5.5 hrs SOT so far with the N5

Yea that is a very good point because every android device I have owned so far that is QHD always has given me lack battery life. All 1080 devices are great, OnePlus One and 6 Plus. You just go into thinking that you will finally get some optimization when it comes to that QHD but I guess not.

I hate when people bring up QHD as the scapegoat to all battery problems when it clearly isn't. Every QHD screen Samsung has implemented on their flagship devices has been more power efficient than the 1080p screen on the previous generation flagship device. This fact has been beaten to death by DisplayMate and Samsung has consistently received praise for it's display improvements in both efficiency and colour reproduction.

Samsung has proven they are a master of hardware efficiency but Samsung is nowhere close to mastering software efficiency. The excessive ram usage, influx of wakelocks and random services running in the background all lead to deteriorated battery life. Until Samsung trims the fat off TouchWiz, their devices will never live up to their true potential regarding battery life.

But imagine if they applied those newfound power efficiencies to a new and improved 1080p display. I also don't think it's a coincidence that in nearly every case, a device's battery performance almost always diminishes with increased display resolution. Name a single device with QHD that is a battery efficient monster.

I just personally think QHD is unnecessary in such a small device--ppi greater that 400 is still really damn good and I just find any benefit not worth the tradeoffs.

Partly agree with both you and msavic. The new qhd are more energy efficient on their own, but the soc has to run more to render all those pixels, so you might not be saving much.

As for qhd being necessary, I belive as long as Samsung continues to use pentile screens it is. My Note 3 which was 1080hd looked grainy even though it had a high pixel density, but my Note 4 and 5 dont. My iphone plus with 1080 and rgb screen also doesn't suffer from this grainyness. So yes, as long as they stay pentile they need qhd.

Any glass screen protector recommendations? So far I've tried JETech and Supershields, they both suck. The SS was cut horribly, no way to get it to fit property. The JT fits better but doesn't stick on the edges. Guess the screen has a slight curve to it.

Tried ZAGG...and well it sucks [ hello HALO ! ] .. then... I got this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013VPS66K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00

Well, it's better than Zagg is all I can say at this point...does not cover edge to edge, but will work till there's a better option out. The screen does seem to have a slight curve..

Ringke cases are very nice...for the price..but offer almost zero protection.

I've been using the Tech 21 case from Best Buy, Link : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/tech21-...es-black/4319702.p?id=bb4319702&skuId=4319702 and it's great for protection. What I don't like is that it's completely opaque, and the N5s ass is well.. kinda sexy :p Also, the power and volume buttons are a bit hard to press with this case on... I'll be returning it to BB because I don't see it being worth $45, tbh.

I received this one today from Amazon, Link : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VQKYSF6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00 Gonna try it when I get home today and post my feedback later.

I also ordered this case from Amazon, Link : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VN6NKH0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 It's coming in on Friday, so will post back then.

Another accessory I bought from Amazon, Link : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VLNT9KW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 I think it'll come handy, and I absolutely stand by Anker products!
