When I briefly owned the ip6+ I don't remember the side swipe working with every app; does it?

Not all no, but with iOS 9 we should have the - back to previous app option when opening links or following link to launch new apps from the previous which will also aid going back to previous app.

Ohh :( Check wifi settings - see if things like Always Allow Scanning or Smart Network Switch are enabled and causing additional resource pull.

_____ Cortana / Disabling Google search & Battery test...

Actually regarding battery in general. I've decided to give Cortana Beta a go - to replace Google Now. I've replaced Google with Bing in the Samsung browser and I'm just going to see with GN disabled what battery gains I would get whilst active and in standby - or whether there is a bigger hit with Cortana.
Well I've stopped using chrome due to battery drain

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is supposed to have some big "under the hood" optimizations for stand by time, and less services drain, giving supposedly a good increase in overall battery life when on 6.0.

Too bad the Note 5 won't see it until sometime next year.

Considering Google Now does not always update and gives prior day or days info, I might do the same.

It works with all the apps that you'd expect it to work. Like Safari, Messages, Mail, Settings, etc. Why, would you expect it to work elsewhere?

Thus, the need for a back button then. Does it work if using Chrome instead of Safari ?

Plus swiping on a large 6 Plus, one handed is tough, whereas a back button could be used with one hand all the time.

No, but it works on a lot of third-party apps, like Facebook, Instagram and WikiHow, etc. It's just a matter of developers including the feature.

Not all the time. Only when your holding the phone at the bottom. If you hold it in the middle, it's very awkward to curl your thumb up to press it. And the 6 Plus is small enough so that you can reach across the width of the phone isn't it? Doesn't matter where you hold it.

Throughout the OS. It's one of the reason why some value the back button on Android; it just works.

Question: does the swipe work with Chrome on IOS?

I mean an example. What can the back button do on Android that the side-swipe can't do on iOS?

The back button on Android works all the time, every time.

Windows Phone has the back button.
BlackBerry has the back button
Android had the back button.

iPhone does not have the back button, and was one of the big reasons I dumped my 6 Plus in less than 30 days. The back button is crucial to a smartphone, IMO a must have.

That's not answering my question. I asked for an example of how it works throughout the OS.
Let's say you get an email with a link to a bog. Once there you click another link to youtube, which opens the YouTube app. Once your done with the video you can hit back to go to the Web page and back again to get back to mail.

Yeah google now cards for me are next to useless - and i don't need traffic reports unless they can accurately predict cows crossing :) So as much as I like Google Now - it's fairly redundant to me.

While not crucial for me, I really like having a consistent way to go back in the same spot. My favorite though is still webos'es gesture area.

I had that mindset but I'm not really missing using it on my ipad

Think apple have built in a back option on ios 9 at the top of the screen to counter it a little

Between swipe back and the new iOS 9 back, the back button hasn't been overly exciting to me coming to the note 5. Pre-iOS 9, I could see the benefit

The feature is a great addition to iOS, been using it on my iPhone and iPad but the implementation is less than ideal as the button is in the top left corner...the very top where the network status is.

It doesn't offer any functional advantage...if the swipe option worked in every app on iOS. The advantage of the back button is that it's ubiquitous on Android. The swipe to go back/forward on iOS is contingent on the developers coding their app for it. It's a shame too because I tend to prefer the swipe...find myself inadvertently doing it whenever I use an Android phone or tablet.
