Corning has responded to claims that GG5 is less scratch resistant

http://goo.gl/CjLUZH
Following that worrisome Samsung Galaxy Note 7 scratch test video, I spoke to Corning about Gorilla Glass 5's seemingly poor scratch resistant properties.

So basically GG5 does nothing?
Er did I miss something? He said it beat the 6S and survived over 50 drops on the face and is the third more durable phone ever tested. It's a beast!

But yeah, drop it on the back and it's going to have cracks along the edges and an all metal iPhone won't. Shocker.

I'm putting a Ringke clear case on it for starters. I kept an iPhone 4 caseless for over a year, no problem.

Corrected my weird typos. No...I'm not drinking and mixing tranquilizers.

drugs and alcohol ....

Pop a few horse transqualisers and wash them down with an industrial tasting £2.50 bottle of Aldi or Lidl liebfraumilch ... Two weeks will fly by.

Hmmm well I currently don't do either (and have never done) but I could give it a go!
It's even worse because tomorrow I'm in CPW and WE HAVE THEM ALREADY so getting to play with it is just going to make it hurt more.:p

Although in other good news - I ordered from Vodafone through my corporate perks site (which gives me 30% off line rental), but they also can give 'wow points' for purchases on new connections.
I didn't think it would work as it was a pre-order, (you basically just have to shop through the corporate link, not Vodafone direct) and since I ordered I've not heard a peep and my wow points haven't moved.
Just got an email now though saying my wow points are pending - 5000 in total which is a nice £50!

More than pleased with that! Add the CPW discount for cases / screen protectors / memory cards / any accessory (which are also 3 for 2 at the min) and it's savings galore! :D
I'll stop bragging... but I need something given this long as s wait.

Rumors are Apple is going back to the glass next year with the iphone 8 too. So you wont buy either then?

That rumor is not happening. Apple doesn't change the design of their phones 2 years in a row. It's already being redesigned for the 7. Either way, there are nice other phones out there.

Yeah, seems the glass is weaker too.....This is why I won't own another Samsung phone till they move away from the glass.

Don't all phones have glass?

I sure hope the iPhone 7 rumored design isn't around for 2 more years.

I don't think I saw this answered anywhere but is it possible to have the battery replaced by Samsung? I searched for the S7 and only saw some small shops doing it. There is also a possibility of breaking the back glass while doing it. Battery replacement, scratch test and the lack of OS updates may make me switch back to the iPhone.

I already have bad scratches on my Note4. My last iPhone was fine.

Yes it is possible to get a battery replaced by Samsung, at your expense unless it develops a fault in the warranty period. Samsung will likely just use a licensed third party repair agent.

That's like saying the S line will last forever. The 6S was probably the last S.

Apple has to do a redesign for the iPhone late 2017, just based on the fact that it will be the iPhone's 10 anniversary, and Samsung will be pushing out some impressive phones.

The iphone 7 is a complete redesign? News to me...Apple is redesigning the iphone 8 (2017) for the 10th anniversary of the iphone. Rumors are it will have a glass back and wireless charging. But this years iphone will look exactly like the current generation. Infact it has been reported here on MR a multitude of times.

I have to say, I'm tempted to get the Note 7. I stopped in the store yesterday and was really impressed. Just having a hard time justifying the move since I have a MBP, Watch, ATV4, ATV3, and a couple of plugs that are Homekit enabled.

I had this same problem back when the 5S came out. I got the Note 3 instead and really liked it but then Apple came up with the 6+ which solved my biggest complaint in wanting a bigger phone. But now I find that I have really missed the SPen and the display on the Note 7 absolutely blows away my 6S+.

Decisions, decisions.

thanks and sorry for the lack of detail, I wasn't expecting this to be free. I would happily pay for it.

The Spigen Ultra Hybrid case looks pretty fantastic on the Note 7

My eyes are playing tricks on me. If the phone was put face down, would the glass touch the table or the case edge's are taller than the display?

We always predicted Samsung will build upon their new features: http://www.droid-life.com/2016/08/18/galaxy-note-7s-always-display-actually-shows-notifications/

Galaxy Note 7’s Always-On Display Actually Shows You All Notifications, Unlike the Galaxy S7

This is sort of why I like Samsung's release cycle. They hop between the Galaxy S line and the Note line, sharing features, improving upon each other. What the Note gains, we'll likely see in the GS line; and what the GS line gains, we'll likely see in the Note line. And with each iteration, their features get better and more refined.

I'm hopeful the S8 will build upon the IRIS scanner, for example. A rise-to-wake function would go perfectly with the IRIS scanner.

The glass does touch the table

First impressions......device is beautiful. It's not as smooth and fast as the iPhone but for the first time I really don't have an issue with it. Screen is just so amazing. Already used the s pen once sign something. Brilliant. Smaller than the 6 plus. Touch responsiveness is great. That was a big problem for me in the past.

I actually came across a case in t mobile called the incipio NGP advanced. It's grippy and has 6ft drop protection. Buttons super responsive. Sending my spigen back.

Loving android notifications. Biggest gripe with iOS.

Always on display. 6 thumbs up. So simple but so useful.

Ok I keep finding more to say. I just took the case off. omg this phone feels like heaven. Narrow but comfortable. Zero hard edges.

More to come!

it would be nicer if they would not forget to port it back to the other devices. The S6 was released not that long after the Note4 and they included themes support in Touchwiz. That feature never was pushed to the Note4 even with the recent Android 6.0.1 update. I don't know if there was a technical reason.

One thing I don't like about the AOD notifications. They are hard to press. Most times I find myself pressing it at least three to four times before it registers. Don't know it that's the nature of AOD or cause the notification icons are too small. I would bet it's a little bit of both, cause the pinned note icon is the same size and quickly registers when I press it.

What I do like about it, once the press is registered ..... the Iris scanner is so fast, it just takes me to what I pressed on the AOD.

I hope Samsung updates with bigger AOD notification icons and/or make it as easy to register my press as a pinned note.
