First impressions of the iris scanner. Not good. May need to do the setup again

Its not working at all
.

Do you wear glasses or contacts ?

Engadget reviewer had issues with it recognising theirs with glasses.

I wear glasses most of the time and have specialist prism's on my lens prescription, so I am not expecting it to work at all and will just set up fingerprint only myself.

it would be nicer if they would not forget to port it back to the other devices. The S6 was released not that long after the Note4 and they included themes support in Touchwiz. That feature never was pushed to the Note4 even with the recent Android 6.0.1 update. I don't know if there was a technical reason.

100% agree with this. It'd be nice if Samsung updated their current flagships to the latest TouchWiz UX.

One thing I don't like about the AOD notifications. They are hard to press. Most times I find myself pressing it at least three to four times before it registers. Don't know it that's the nature of AOD or cause the notification icons are too small. I would bet it's a little bit of both, cause the pinned note icon is the same size and quickly registers when I press it.

What I do like about it, once the press is registered ..... the Iris scanner is so fast, it just takes me to what I pressed on the AOD.

I hope Samsung updates with bigger AOD notification icons and/or make it as easy to register my press as a pinned note.

I wonder if the touch sensors are off to conserve battery for the AOD, and it's not "waking up" in time to register your touches. Sounds like a bug possibly?

The Note 7 is tempting me. I like my Apple ecosystem but Apple just doesn't make a good phablet.. The iPhone Plus is too big and uncomfortable. I thought the iPhone was due for a redesign this year, hopefully with smaller bezels, but apparently this is not the case.

The scratch thing got me worried though. Since you can't get a decent tempered glass protector for an edge display, you have to rely on the original glass itself, and for me a scratch in the wrong place can ruin the experience of a phone..

I tried it with somebody's clear prescription glasses, worked. Tried it with my lightly tinted aviator sun glasses, worked but not as quickly. Tried it with my dark shades, can't get it to work at all.

The knife scratch test shown positive results though. So it's best to wait for user experiences, if you're that concerned.

No glass or contacts. I did have Lasik a few years ago though. I think I read it could cause issues. The weird thing is the setup wormed great and it worked a couple times perfectly. Now not at all.

Well I'm out of the club. Refused delivery of my 2 Note 7's as I was having 2nd thoughts on the phone, but also AT&T. I'm going to hunker down for a bit and see if Verizon comes out with a BOGO, I have until 8/30 to do the ATT BOGO. But I had other concerns as well. Mainly the price is very steep, but also I am very concerned about the step backwards in terms of scratch durability. I may also just wait and see what Apple comes up with, I usually go back and forth between Apple and Android and I guess maybe it's time to revisit the Upside Down world. There is also the new Nexus that might be interesting.

My first impressions (less than 24 hours) coming from an iPhone 6S Plus and Nexus 6P before that...

  • Design is incredible. Hard to believe that this has a larger screen that the Plus and is physically smaller and lighter
  • Always on Display seemed gimicky at first but it makes great desk clock and I already find it useful
  • Fingerprint scanner is as fast as the iPhone's but I like the Nexus 6P's execution better
  • Touch Wiz has been a pretty smooth experience. If you hate the cartoony looking icons, just go to the theme store and download a theme. I am using Material, which was free.
  • I was a little squeamish in shutting off iMessage at first, but there are only two people I really iMessage anyway. Everyone else has WhatsApp, Facebook, and Hangouts. I got over it in 30 minutes.
  • Bloatware on the T-Mobile variant isn't so bad, but it still sucks. At least you can easily disable it
  • I use both OSX and Windows with Chrome as my main browser. Chrome does an excellent job in integrating the experience (continuity) between your phone and Mac/PC. I have a bunch of tabs open in Chrome on my Mac, and then when I need to take a dump or something, I can just continue off what I'm reading on my phone
  • Notification light: It changes everything.
  • Performance was slow at the beginning after installing a bunch of apps, but once that was done, everything now flies
  • Feels great using my Moto 360 again, even though it's the first gen - Android Wear is light years ahead of Apple Watch
  • Being able to scribble notes right on the screen just by pulling out the SPEN without opening any apps or waking the phone has been a godsend. I've owned the phone for less than 24 hours and I have used it A LOT already
  • I had tacos for dinner and had food smears all over my phone but I didn't care. Just washed it all off in the sink and my Note 7 is all squeaky clean again
  • Bluetooth performance was as good as any smartphone. Paired it with my LG Tone and watched Netflix at the gym. Sound and video was great
  • Android Auto worked perfectly in my 2016 Volt. I like it a lot better than CarPlay
  • Built in speaker isn't as bad as some reviews say that it is. Definitely could be better though but it is no worse than the iPhone's
  • No issues with call quality, we hear each other loud and clear
  • The fast charging (wired and wireless) is really impressive. Like holy crap it's fast. Battery life... so far not too impressed but too early to say.
  • Camera is as good as everyone says it is... however some may hate the post processing and that Samsung tends to exaggerate the saturation of the photos. Here's a super quick comparison between the Note and iPhone

Corning give a politicians answer to the issue of scratches.

A scratch is a scratch to me whether it's there by transference or not. Your screen is essentially marked. A screen protector seems very much recommended.

I suspect Gg5 is cornings misstep, much like Qualcomm's 810 v1 was a dud / misfire. Expect an inevitable interim revision v.2 of gg5 before they fix the issues with gg6 next year ...

For those of you new to Samsung, give the Samsung Browser a try over Chrome. You can download an ad blocker from the Play Store (Crystal or AdBlock for Samsung) which will make browsing much smoother.
I also use the fingerprint sensor to store my passwords.
I still use Chrome for those times I need to grab a tab from another computer or vice versa, but 95% of the time I'll use the Samsung Browser.

Wow already seeing discounted ones on Swappa. 3 Verizon ones for 800, that's a decent savings when you factor in no tax as well. I'm surprised so soon, if it was an iPhone it would probably be 20% more expensive if they were sold out on release day. I wonder what the price will look like in 1-2 months.

wow. especially when the seller will get dinged with PayPal fees too. Swappa used to be great (and still is) but it seems like PayPal's fees went up when they broke up with eBay.

They must have gotten the $300 trade in credit from Verizon so weren't worried about losing some $$ off retail.

I think it'll be just fine. I've seen a few other scratch tests on YouTube that seem fine. And if GG5 is this bad, we should see more videos exposing this.

Whilst dramatic looking a hammer actually isn't a proper test as the hammer material isn't as tough as you would think, same with keys or razor blades . The MOHs picks are the only really accurate way of testing hardness.

I'll be screen protecting up regardless. Out of interest did Samsung release official screen protectors for the S7 /S7e ? Or is the Note 7 the first time they've released official screen protector? I can't seem to buy official Samsung ones here, I'll have to import.

Acurate? Yes, but representative of real world events? Most likely not. Other than sand, most of us will not be doing what we did in that video with the picks. Keys, loose change and fingernails are what most well be hitting their phones with. Let's see how this plays out though.

Well I'm on the beach 3 times a day. My car, my pockets and everything else end up collecting sand particles, so for me it's a genuine danger.

Managed to get the official Samsung ones ordered from mobilefun. A little expensive but they look good

I'm actually having second thoughts, as well. I'm thinking it might be wise to wait for the iPhone 7 and 2016 Nexus devices before making a final decision. I'm also finding it difficult to pry myself away from iOS. Been an Android guy for years, still love it, but tried out a 6s Plus back in December and haven't seen an Android phone that could pull me away until the Note 7. It's a beautiful device, that's for sure. But Samsung always has its share of issues, and the lack of updates worry me. I can't believe I'm even saying this, but staying Apple might be a wise decision for me. The phone switching game is just getting incredibly old.

*REALLY like the "Stranger Things" reference!

Just went and got the last Note 7 that they had in the store.....setting everything up now. I hate that I paid my iPhone off and now have to wait 14 days to unlock it. Anyone know a way around this?

Ugh I HATE screen protectors which have those huge cutouts, it just looks so cheap. I'm very surprised Samsung released something like that. The Note 5 had some decent ones which went edge to edge both vertical and horizontal and made it look as if there as no screen protector on there (with the added benefit of covering the Samsung logo). Let us know how it feels, in particular if it changes the feel of the S pen.

BTW do you work at the beach? Or are just lucky enough to be there every day?

I think it's a load of BS. If what we are seeing is material transfer, and if they say material transfer is almost impossible to remove, then what's the difference? It looks, acts and smells like a scratch so it should be afforded the same negative, especially when you didn't see that scratch or material transfer on GG4. It also didn't make sense for them to hint that they thought the load used was inconsistent, but then say that glass could never be scratched by a 3 or 4 pick, if that's the case then the load should be unimportant.

Great write up. I feel very much the same way as many of your points, including the ones about how easy it is to get over iMessage, the worry-free nature of being able to wash your phone, and how fast wireless charging can be.

Which of those two pictures would you say most accurately represents the real life colors of the objects you photographed?

My issue with the iPhone camera for the past few years is what it does to some shades of blonde hair. My hair and my daughter's teacher hair are the same shade of blonde and this shade turns out looking really weird like dandelion yellow highlighter. I was really shocked in a good way when test photos with the demo units of the Galaxy 7 gave results that looked like my hair really looks with no boosting of brassy tones. I know the saturation is exaggerated but there weren't any weird tints that I've been getting from iPhones.

My iPhones also tended to shift blues to purples.

I'm just lucky I have beaches on my doorstep (5 mins drive) around me and as I work from my home office, I like to get out with the dogs for a walk 3 times a day otherwise I'd go stir crazy.
Don't make me hate you! I'm so jealous! :D See, I'm green. I'm going to the beach soon but I don't get to live near any. Maybe when we retire.

i do love it, couldn't live without it now. It's a fantastic facility to avail of just for your own mindfulness.

Where I live it's very rural but also very scenic. I have a number of ireland highest mountains to climb within 35 mile drive, the beautiful Blasket isles and Skellig Michael (where they shot the end of Star Wars Force Unleashed) just an hours drive and multiple beaches some ideal for surfing, some diving, some horse riding, some just chilling out and national parks to avail of too. It's a good place to live, even on the windiest, rainy bleak days :). Even the gym & leisure centre is only a short walk from the beach :) (indeed its main income is from holiday homes during summer)
