How can Apple make it mandatory then?

Edit: I guess because Apple controls/owns the hardware and software

Not mandatory, just stock. Include it as the only messaging solution with the google package. oem's such as Samsung are free to use their own messaging apps. I don't see what the issue is, you get a PC and it has MS Edge installed as a browser, yet you are free to choose whichever browser you like.

Did anybody preorder at Best Buy? Did you get to pick up the 256 GB card the day of your preorder? I preordered through Verizon and may want to scrap that and go with Best Buy if that doesn't require any dealing with Samsung's website to get the free gift.

I can't recall, does Allo have SMS/MMS integrated as well? If not, it's gonna fail. The overwelming majority of users, at least in the US, just use the default SMS/MMS app and unless they're prompted to use it right out of the box, it'll suffer the same fate as Hangouts. And in parts of the world where WhatsApp is the overwelming choice, why choose Allo instead?

For Allo to have any chance, it needs to be the default messaging app on all Android phones and have SMS integrated.

I'm not sure, everything I've read mainly talks about the encrypted texting, which is odd to me because it's tightly integrated with google assistant and the two just seem at odds. From what I understand there is yet ANOTHER app for video calls called Duo, which I suppose is to compete with facetime.

What Google needs to do at this point is, allow your phone number to be tied in with hangouts/Google voice/or Allo/duo. Then they need to set an api so that oems can tie in that service with their messaging app. So when you first set up your phone and log in with your Google account it'll then ask you to opt in and from there it could work just like imessage. Only downside is Google wouldn't have control over what the messaging app would look like as the oems would still have control over that. But they could still make their own messaging app in the app store that you could use if you wanted.

Google did state that Allo will be tied to your phone number. I think it will ask to be a default messenger at setup, but highly doubt it will be integrated into a manufacturer's skin message app. It will just take over as the messenger with the Allo UI.

I'm in the same boat. All friends and family use iMessage. But why does that stop you from switching? Granted it's easier to use iMessage when everyone else uses it but shouldn't SMS/mms work fine (although it sucks compared to iMessage).

I was on the same boat too, however take this into perspective... if your friends or family think it's worth it to make a small effort to install WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts, etc... then they are usually the ones you keep in touch with the most. If not, then you hardly talk to them or they hardly talk to you anyway so it doesn't even matter.

I only have 2 people that I constantly use iMessage / Facetime with. Everyone else has the alternatives listed above.

Two cases arrived today

Problem with this cases is your premium phone feels now like a cheap piece of plastic. I would only use a pouch to feel the superb materials samsung has used for this phone.

I've used pouches in the past but find them annoying getting the phone out and don't like the thought of scratching such a great design. Certainly when I buy and sell my phones each year

Hopefully we will all start getting shipping email notifications the end of this week or beginning of the next :)

Agree with your first statement...would prefer to use my phones naked but in reality, the better handling offered by a case sometimes trumps naked beauty. That's why for the most part if I use a case I try to stick with a slim, leather case when possible. I've used Apple's leather case for my iPhones since the 5s.

I used to use a leather sleeve but also find it a nuisance to constantly take it out, especially now that with iOS 10, being able to raise my 6S+ to wake it and unlock the phone with my fingerprint capacitively (no longer have to press the home button) means my phone is unlocked quicker than ever. Fiddling with a sleeve ruins all of this.

It's premium in more ways than just the exterior. The screen is top notch, chipset top notch, camera is amazing, the stylus is in a world of its own, so on and so forth. A plastic case is not going to suddenly negate all those premium features.

Yeah, I hate using cases too. But after what happened with my edge (and it was in a case too no less) where I broke the screen with a 4 ft drop, I've become a little more paranoid and have been using cases more than before. Heck around the same time I was handling my 6S Plus, my headphone cord got cought in my car door and yanked the phone out of my hand and it hit the concrete, giving me a nice dent on my mute switch. Luckily everything still works and there wasn't even another scratch on it, but still.

Add project Fi to the mess, as that's what many think will eventually eat up Google Voice. Personally I'd prefer if they simply start charging for google voice and then support it properly.

Sure it will, no I'm just kidding, kind of. I can understand why some of you want to protect your investment. I'm pretty careful with my stuff, but things happen to anyone. But that's what insurance is for. I always spring for squaretrade, it's pretty cheap and they are an awesome company. Yeah you eat the deductible, but that's the risk you take. I don't see how those rinky dinky thin cases are going to protect it from a fall anyway, you need a nice thick padded case for that. As far as every day scratches I find it almost impossible to scratch my phone. MRU brings up a good point though as he is at the beach all day long (taking pictures of dogs? :p) and the sand can be an issue. But honestly I abuse the crud out of my Note 5 and there isn't a single blemish on it. I'm VERY excited to be using the Note 7 swinging in the wind naked.

Gorilla Glass 5 claim that it will protect the device from shoulder height drops onto hard surfaces 80% of the time, pretty awesome. I never worry about scratches, now I don't have to worry about drops.

Remember the caveat is how the oem designed it, so a curved glass like the note will be more susceptible to breaks then the 80% Corning is claiming.

We'll find out more when YouTubers get a hold of them and start doing drop test and torture tests.

Yes the samsung leather case is also a nice option I also have this one for my s7 edge. Adds a layer of protection but also feels very premium. It's coming for the note 7 too, will look awesome with the black one.
