Yeah, I'd agree with this. Apple and Samsung are in a league of their own now. They have tighter control over their own phones now and can properly optimize software and hardware.

However, do we have any info on the US variant of the S6/S6 Edge? Are we also getting the Exynos model or will it be watered down with a Snapdragon SoC, like it has been for the past few years? Samsung needs to push the envelope like Apple and release one model for the US that supports ALL our bands.

Samsung has been very vocal the last couple of months, dissing the Snapdragon 810 publicly. Samsung blames the overheating issues. And finally has their factories ready to pump out enough Exynos chips to handle a worldwide release.

We in the us do get exynos.

That is a good review. I always take battery life with a grain of salt from reviewers. IMHO unless you actually use the phone as your daily driver over at least 2 weeks.....you will not get a good feel for battery life.

Yeah very strong review. This stood out:

"Combined with Android 5.0’s new ART runtime and Samsung’s homegrown EFS 2.0 storagesolution, the S6 is not only the fastest Android device I’ve ever tested, but the first in which I haven’t noticed anything resembling slowdown. From the sub-second opening of the camera app to the way (well-coded) apps scroll, the S6 achieves what Android has been striving for years towards: utter smoothness."

And the bit about the camera sounds really great.

If the S6 is slightly thinner than the iPhone 6, why does it look thicker here?

Is it just the angle/lighting?

Made the switch to the 6 plus recently mainly because I was tired of Touchwiz. Interested in seeing if there are any improvements this time around

Seems like a lot of reports on the 810 may be fabricated to serve a marketing agenda .....

Basically wait till people actually get the devices before believing anything on face value as we are constantly being manipulated ....

That being said i have no issue whether it's exynos or Qualcomm as long as I get performance I expect. Chipset alone certainly isn't one of the things I worry about buying a flagship phone (as I know it's going to be top of the range, and I highly suspect 95% of regular consumers/buyers of the S6 will not be even thinking about exynos or snapdragon or likely even know there is a difference).

I dunno. How does one equate if Qualcomm and Exynos specific chipset is on equal playing ground as far as what is in the Samsung Alpha? In other words 12 inches equals a foot. I don't know how to measure the Q versus the E in the device to tell if one or the other is a shortchanged chip. All I know is the Alpha sitting on display at Best Buy with the Qualcomm does not impress me in the least as far as performance but your review using the Exynos certainly does.

Yeah the Alpha with snapdragon is a quad core chip, the Exynos model I had was octo. The new 810 essentially is same octo big little as the Exynos so hopefully it should perform equivalently.

The Exynos alpha was one fast little handset despite people just pigeon holing it as a mid level device, where everything bar screen resolution was flagship.

There actually is an interesting thread on XDA Note 4 forum regarding an office benchmark pitting the Note 4's 805 against the Exynos in the Note 3 ...

Then there is the overheating issue. If it overheats it will throttle performance.

If the Alpha had a bigger screen I would be a buyer with the Exynos chip. Currently it probably could be had for around $350 brand new in its current size. I know Amazon is selling it for $395.

Thats what the article is debunking. The overheating issue which it says has been fabricated. Whether true or not you should read the article it's very interesting and gives pause for thought as it examines the sources or these rumours and the traffic ...

I guess we will find out soon enough. The LG Flex 2 and the HTC M9 both will be benchmarked and any issues will come out then. Both have the 810 chipset in question. But you can't blame Samsung for going with their own chipset for their phones. By all reports the Galaxy S6 benchmarks are off the charts. the performance is there.......
Does anyone really think there is a conspiracy to make Qualcomm look bad?

I think the main point is that we live in a world where the press and media manipulate often by psychological Chinese whispers and often a greater emphasis should be focussed on what's not being said that what is - especially pre-release of anything.

So until we actually get real user confirmation I'm not going to jump on the all hate this because of certain processor bandwagon.

Essentially the processor would be least concern at this stage than say camera performance on M9 or Touchwiz memory management on S6/edge

All of which will be unveiled in time without the need to pre-condemn which tends to be rife in forums like this.

All will be revealed is quite true.

I hope for HTC's sake they are wrong. This might be the final nail in the coffin for them. No hate for HTC or Qualcomm from me......
But if after release the M9 under performs in benchmarks. Then we all know it is being throttled so it doesn't overheat.
The site reporting the M9 overheating issues was Dutch not Chinese. But it doesn't matter what the country origin was......

When I say 'Chinese whispers' it's an expression not a destination ;)

I stopped into the Samsung store in NYC. Got to handle both the S6 and the Edge, and both devices are indeed gorgeous and feel great in the hand.

The Edge screen is quite spectacular and now I may be leaning back towards getting that, pending availability and price. The screen is a thing of beauty. The dual-edge display is subtle, but it also cannot be ignored. In a weird way, it immerses you into what's happening on your screen. And yes, slide-out menus are easier to do because of it. I don't know how else to explain it; there's just more to reach for on the screen, I guess both literally and figuratively. It feels VERY good.

The bezel-less sides are insane. It completely makes you ignore the top/bottom bezels because the screen is just so captivating. It feels like you're operating and staring at nothing but screen. Very unique and special feeling.

The S6 regular is also quite nice. It felt very simple after handling the Edge, to be honest. TouchWiz felt great! No stuttering or lag whatsoever. And I tried to switch apps and do a lot with it. Everything was just spot-on, responsive, smooth, fast. The best way I can describe is that the software just felt confident. Everything happened as it was meant to be.

I walked away impressed by both devices, but captivated by the Edge. Really excited to own this device.

----------

Regular iPhone 6 = 6.9mm
Galaxy S6 = 6.8mm

Maybe the camera protrudes out the back more on the S6 raising it higher on the table

Ah, right. I think you nailed it.

Cool. Yeah I've got no interest in the regular 6 it's the edge and how it feels and is different to anything I've had before is the real compelling reason for me. Hopefully won't be too long now before we get pricing (although I find carriers here tend to keep it secret until day it's released).

And yes, the S6 felt really tame compared. =X

I figured if anyone had it on display fairly close to me it would be the NYC store. I know we are only a week away from BB having it out but I may just take the trip anyways. Color me jealous, it is great you got to see them!

If you can get there, go for it. The staff were very friendly in letting you try the devices. They're also on display, too. I forgot to see if they had a gold platinum on display. D'oh.

If availability or even price is a major issue with the Edge, I may hold off until it becomes more readily available and/or the price comes down. I really want the Edge now over the regular S6...
