This may sound embarrassing but I’m kind of excited by the thought of picking up this device for videos specifically. I’ve become obsessed with AMOLED the past few years and with this new aspect ratio of 16:10 it’ll give a nice boost in display area for 16:9 videos over my current 10.5” Pro.

If you take the diagonal measurement for 16:9 video on the Tab S4, it comes out to 10.22” diagonal measurement. My question is, will the device play YouTube videos at a resolution of 2560 X 1440 for 16:9 videos? Thanks.
As someone who owns a Tab S2, you'll love the display. Samsung makes the best panels.

I just can't get over the fact that they used a Snapdragon 835 in this thing when they already released a phone with the 845 six months ago.
Yeah that's disappointing they went with last years tech and are charging $650. OTOH, they are the only company making high end, premium Android tablets.

Seriously though. No reason for them not to and I’ll bet is a big determining factor for consumers purchasing this as a productivity device. I mean the A9X makes the 835 look bad, let alone the A10X and the next A series chip out this fall.

The 835 is a more than enough capable chip. The 845 is really not needed on the Tab S4 if you compare the difference to the 835.

It may be capable, but it isn't state of the art.

Apple, which is what Samsung needs to benchmark off of, does a small bump up on its processors when it releases a new iPad. Samsung is releasing the Note 9 this month with the Qualcomm 845, yet it couldn't be bothered to use it in the Tab S4?

I know this is slight thread drift, but it is getting to be more and more that the Android OEM's don't even want to show up when it comes to tablets and smartwatches. Yet they expect to be able to continue to sell smartphones at Apple prices.

You could argue the iPad isn't state of the art either, the screen looks pretty average compared to the oled screen of the original tab, let alone the newer model, and considering the screen is the interface, it's no small thing.

Who makes a state of the art tablet anyway?

Except LCD on the iPad still looks great. The iPad Pro is state of the art.

So tell me ...... What would be the noticeable difference between both processors that the Tab S4 would miss out on? Remember, this is a tablet, not a phone.

More powerful CPU, GPU, and better battery life. I'm sure you can figure out how those are useful for a device they're touting as a professional device.

Slightly more powerful CPU (by max clock, which it will not run on max clock the majority of the time).

Slightly more powerful GPU, might push unoptimized games for better performance, but the 540 is still in the same performance range as the 630. Which is why I ask for a "noticeable difference".

Battery life might already be satisfactory enough. Samsung claims a 16 hour video playback on a single charge. If that's even close to being true, then that already tops their competitors.

There might even be a chance that 4gb ram is good enough, being their software has extremely improved over the years. I know my previous S8+ ran like a champ.

So again, what's the need for Samsung to use the 845 chips that cost more, when the benefit will be minimal? Doesn't make sense for an Android tablet. Android phones, differ story.

Some people prefer LCD to OLED.

That is true but what would Raymond Soneria say?
I'll take oled over 120hz.
My point is there is no state of the art tablet yet, they all have misgivings of some form.

Also, my tablet use is pure consumption, no creation, so my criteria for "best" will be very different to a creator's.

Except there is, you're just pretending a state of the art LCD isn't state of the art.

Okay then.

Here I was lumping all displays together, I didn't realise we differentiate between types of displays.

I guess it's not really fair to compare an ipad and a android tablet the seeing they use different types of processors and software right?

The ipad pro is the state of the art apple tablet.
The galaxy tab s is the state of the art android tablet.

Right?

Right?

IPad is using state of the art components and the S4 isn't.

I guess that's good if you want to watch 16 hours of video. But I notice a difference in battery life between my Galaxy S8+ and S9. For me, the S8+ would go three days of my normal usage versus the S9 which would go four.

If I'm paying a premium price for a tablet, then I want a premium processor, not last year's processor.

I think it even more important in a tablet because the I expect to keep a tablet longer than a smartphone.

That last part is actually why I wouldn't buy this one. LCD lasts longer than OLED, so you won't have to worry about using this tablet too long.

I'm still using my Tab s 10.5, the screen looks better than any LCD tablet even now.

I've used this tablet for years for watching video and there's no issues with the screen.

Sure, if you used it with some form of static image with high contrast, you might get burn.

I finally have a new choice for a tablet that's not going to look worse.

And shock horror, the old screen still looks great.

Buy it if you want, I just don't think Android tablets are a good choice nor do I feel OLED provides enough of a benefit over LCD for tablets

Thanks, I might but the Tab s 10.5 does a great job as a videoplayer and regardless of what you think, looks heaps better than an LCD screen, especially in the dark where most of my tablet viewing is done.

It has a 16:9 format, which means full screen or smaller black bars at worse but ultimately, a larger media area, for video.

Now if I was going to use a tablet primarily for reading or using specific app, I'm sure another tablet would be more useful, but I'm not, so it wont be.

If someone else but Samsung made an omled 16:9 tablet, I'd be all over it, but they don't and for the amount of time I use my Tab as a video player, I can't see the point of regressing to an LCD/LED screen been there, done that, there's no comparison, it's a muted land of grey washness, where true black doesn't exist.

Please let us know how the Tab S 10.5 is when you get it, I always love reading first hand accounts
