Istat is really cool - but I am l also looking for a tool similar til CPU-Z for Windows which can she current CPU core frequency - does it exist for Mac??

Nicroma,

Could you possibly do us Mac Pro users a favor? We are trying to ascertain whether the i5/i7 iMacs have a power management issue which is affecting Mac Pros. Since the processor architecture is similar, there is a chance that it could exist on the iMac as well. Having said that, it looks like the i5 can be confirmed to not have this problem.

If your willing to help out, if you could please do the following and report back.

1) Download and install iStat Menus so you can monitor CPU Temp.

http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatmenus/

2) Close all programs except iTunes.
3) Play audio in iTunes for at least 10 mins.
4) After 10 mins of ONLY playing audio in iTunes, check the CPU temp.

Your temp should be at or near it's idle temp (30C +/-)

If your temp is closer to 50C, then that would be an indication that the Mac Pro power management bug is also affecting i7 iMacs.

Thanks in advance!

Just to get a sampling of the 64bit data we have so far:

i7 w/ 4gb= 9656
i7 w/ 4gb= 9638 (http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/183671)
i7 w/ 4gb= 9508 (http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/183410)
i7 w/ 8gb= 9554 (http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/183534)

So it looks like a ~9600 average of the four sets of data we have so far. Not bad, not bad!!! :D
Another 64-bit Core i7 w/ 8GB data point here. For what it's worth, I ordered the 4GB/1TB Core i7 iMac and added another 4GB of Crucial RAM (purchased from Newegg for less than 1/2 of Apple's price) on my own.

Do you notice a real world difference with 8 over 4 gigs of ram?

I'm trying to figure out weather I should order 4 more gigs from Crucial..

Can you post the link to the newegg memory you purchased?

Sure! It's insanely easy to install aftermarket RAM -- there's no way that the additional cost of the Apple-installed memory is worth the (literally) less-than-5-minutes it takes to install the aftermarket RAM.

I don't have any frame of reference; in other words, my new iMac has always had 8GB of memory installed. That being said, the new i7 machine doesn't feel substantially faster than my 2.66 Core 2 Duo iMac did when performing mundane tasks like word processing/web-surfing/spreadsheet editing. I suspect you'll only notice the additional memory when performing intensive tasks like video editing, video encoding, and the like. I doubt it would even make much difference when gaming. But for $90 it was worth it to me.

Thanks!

Yeah, I will go ahead and order this today. I also have a 120GB SSD sitting here waiting for my i7 27" which will hopefully ship next week.

Wheres the MOST IMPORTANT benchmark? Where's the 3D Mark score? ;P

Seriously... Haven't seen those floating around... Geekbench whatever, but how much juice it has in games?

Thanks, I think I'll hold off on the extra ram for now

i am fairly certain that apple has disabled the RAM running at 1333MHz (even though it is suported via the chipset).
Disabled it on the ROM? It seems silly to impose such a limitation on an otherwise "wicked fast" Mac. But Jobs and Ive have done more foolish things before, so I wouldn't be surprised. Even so, it would be nice to see this confirmed.

Just did a quick stopwatch test i7, 8GB ram, 2TB drive.
Illustrator CS4 launch - 3 seconds
Photoshop CS4 Launch - 2.5 Seconds
Now I'm excited. Thank you for these "real world" benchmarks. These are the kind of tests we need to see, not simply Geekbench which doesn't factor in HD speed.

My guess is that those launch speeds probably would be just as fast with the 1T drive and 4GB of RAM.

they would disable it using the EFI.

im not sure why apple has done it, but im sure they have their reasons. it doesnt really matter anyway, because the RAM isnt the bottleneck of the system. having faster RAM would just be silly.

love your quote formatting btw ;)

thats a bout how fast my MBP with a 7200rpm hard drive boots with a fresh install. a new generation CPU and more RAM wont make the OS boot much faster... its mainly the speed of the heard drive limiting it. an SSD would make it boot much faster.

I'm like a crack addict in withdrawal after the slow down in posts about the benchmarks for the i7. I need my fix!!

same! hurry up and order yours so we can both get our fix!

Yeah I know! Well looks like things are lining up for an online order next weekend for me. Just have to sort out a few things first. ;)

I would say you'd sooner use 8GB RAM over 4GB than you would see the difference between C2D 3.06 and the i7, day-to-day.

hmm yea same here pretty much. im trying to decide between hackintosh i7-860, or imac i7-860. its a tough decision!

After all your posts in iMac shipment threads...I thought you ordered one the day they were announced? Duh, get the iMac. Think of that big screen. You know you've already made up your mind.
