WAO! Very impressive!

Did you do the benchmark on a fresh machine? Coz I did the benchmark on my i7 after restoring from time machine backup...its highest mark was just 91xx

Yeah that was on a fresh system. It's going to take a while for me to migrate everything over but I'll do it again after that is done.

Modern Warfare 2 looks ridiculous on this new iMac. I just started playing. The highest res at 2560x1440 has problems, and the bottom of the screen is missing and then it comes down from the top. I'm running it at 1080p though and it runs like butter.

are you sure about MBP score?

my macbook with similar specs scores 2610 (only difference i have WD 500 GB HDD), i might want need to run that with out any app running.

Well, unfortunately I am sure about that score. I have seen many other similar MBP users get higher scores than mine. I had the full version of 32 bit geekbench running with no other apps open on a fresh install of Snow Leopard. The HD is a brand new 320 7200rpm drive. I have had a really negative experience with my MBP. After only about 3 1/2 years the battery doesn't work at all, gone through 2 HD's, overheats constantly, dead pixels, uneven backlighting, and won't burn CD's. Maybe it's cause I actually use my computer, or so I like to think, but it has been very frustrating.

how odd.. my original CD MBP gets 2640 after 21days uptime haha!

your computer does sound pretty battered. :(

Haha ya, it is. But I guess I have to be honest. Most of it probably is my fault. I am a photographer and when I do shoots this computer comes with me. I've had this thing on Frozen lakes in Newfoundland, Maine and New Brunswick doing night shots, i've taken it with me in the mountains hiking, Florida beaches etc. I guess I have a hard time keeping my work at a desk.

i dont see the cold as being a bad thing! our macs get pretty darn hot! i know mine would be loving the freezer lol.

i dont see how getting bumped around can effect RAM/CPU/GPU etc. maybe the hdd.... i guess there is something slightly damaged, i dont know wat though it seems wierd generally components are either working or not working. it could be your OS i guess.

So after gaming for an hour or so, the back left of my iMac is cooler in Windows to the touch than when it sits idle in Snow Leopard. I think it's because the fans are keeping it a lot cooler when the GPU gets a kick in the pants when gaming.

Here's my comparative benchmarks:

hackintosh E8400 C2D overclocked to 3.72GHz. Geekbench ~4950 (32bit)
Handbrake, rip "Meet The Parents", 1h43m, PAL DVD AppleTV preset
1h34m, 1.43GB output file, 27.73fps

iMac i7 2.8GHz, Geekbench ~8200 (32bit)
0h41m, 1.54GB output file, 63fps (dunno why file size is different?)

So in handbrake this thing is MORE than twice as fast as my overclocked C2D 3.72GHz Hackintosh. BTW all "8" cores in use (according to Activity Monitor), although not maxed out- and yes it is hot but still very very quiet, no jet fans.

My thoughts exactly. And you definitely could be right about the OS but i have always done a fresh install and never transferred old info from the old drive or user accounts. Maybe its the apps I use, I dunno. But you know, even with all those problems I still love mac and OSX.

what an odd occurence. maybe your RAM isnt enough. 2GB is the max though, which really sucks :( any chance you can find out your swap file, page ins and page outs in activity monitor and post them? that could be it i guess..

That is the kind of tests I've looking for - thanks. More than twice as fast as E8400 is really impressing...

wow cant believe i missed that test! what a great result.

Yep, the i7 is absolutely killer. I just finished a session of COD4, all settings completely maxed at native resolution. Smooth as buttah. Sure, it's not a "proper" gaming computer but good enough for my casual gaming.

I find the screen is just about the right size. I think the 16:9 aspect might actually be preferable for larger monitors, as it is more hassle to look further vertically than horizontally. It seems. Or maybe that's just my fanboy showing...

Lightroom is lightening fast on my 21MP DSLR pix. The reason i justified buying it :) Sweet.

how long had your computer been turned on? if it had been turned on for >2 days then its most def not the RAM. if it was like 1hr then the data is inconclusive :(

Well because I go to school and I have to shutdown my puter after every class due to not having a battery I can't leave it on for more than 2 days. I guess I will never know. But its all good, that iMac will be here soon and I am really liking the reviews coming out.

ahh i see i see. that would explain it then.

after 22days of uptime, i have:
page ins: 2.48GB
page outs: 1.63GB
swap used: 3.69GB

if you find you are around those numbers or probably even half of them - you need more RAM!
