I can see how a non-obsessive person can view the iPhone as "enhancing" life but since I'm obsessed with the iPhone, I have to put it down before it puts me down.... my point is... I can't put it down because I pay so much for it. The iPhone is a luxury... it's not a necessity. It's not like a car, where you *have* to use it to get to work every day. My life could still be fully functional without an iPhone and I wouldn't have to worry about updates... I wouldn't be waiting for new features... I would just go find something else to be obsessed with for a little while.

When I get home from work, there's almost nothing to do on my computer because I've seen it all with my iPhone while I was away from my computer.

I hate that I'm even thinking about getting rid of it.

Perhaps someone can design an App which will shut your iphone off for an hour at a time and then allow it to be on for 5 minutes and then turn itself off again. iSelfControl? :)

I hate that you're seriously wasting your day over this. I think you need help kiddo.

We know you have OCD. Are you even getting help? Getting rid of the iPhone does no good if you find something else to become obsessed with.

I have the answer to your problems.

Send me your iPhone, I'll send you a razor with an apple sticker on the back, And every so often I'll send you an MMS pic of your old iPhone that way you'll know it's being taken care of. :D

Sounds like just life is to complicated for you. A tall building might help..

I used to be fine before I got an iPhone. I used to enjoy my iPod touch all the time and now the iPhone feels like a burden.

Then maybe you need to take a break from having one.

I specifically like my iPhone because it's the first smartphone I've owned where I'm not constantly thinking about it. As in, I'm not consistently fighting with it, or grumbling because it crashed, or fretting that maybe the e-mail I'm waiting for didn't arrive because of some glitch. It's just there, and it does its job.

As for the monthly pricing, it's no more than any other smartphone. That's just what you have to pay to get that functionality, and it's not just Apple. Take it or leave it.

If you have to fret over any piece of technology, then it's not worth fretting over. No offense intended here, but you seem to be having a very dysfunctional relationship with an inanimate object. Maybe a trial separation is in order?

Snap out of it TheSpaz. Your threads amuse me. Keep the phone.

I'm not wasting my day over it. I'm at work.

Haha, that's one of the few times I've ever literally laughed at a post online. I'm not sure if you're serious, but it's pretty good even if this is trolling!

Try this instead:

1. Intentionally scratch up the back of your iPhone and scratch the front a few times, but nothing noticeable on the glass over the display.
2. Slide it across the floor for 10 minutes, drop it from about 12-18 inches or so for good measure.
3. Stop reading the iPhone main forum and the accessory forum
4. Visit the apps forum, find at least 50 apps that sound cool and download them all.
5. Don't visit MacRumors for a week and try to use your PC as little as possible, relying solely on the iPhone as much as you can.
6. Having completed the first 5 steps, enjoy your new freedom from the obsession of a perfect device and use it as the tool that it truly is.
7. Pay a friend to punch you in the face as hard as they can if you ever stare at your iPhone again trying to scrutinize some particular aspect of it in just the right kind of light.

Geez, Spaz, throw the sucker away and STOP COMPLAINING. It's your own freaking fault if you're letting an ELECTRONIC rule your life. We honestly couldn't care less about your lack of self-control or your whiny complaints about your monthly bill. Get some will power and do something about it rather than complaining about it online in a forum where people honestly don't care.

Worrying about the cost is like spending a lot of money to go on vacation and then obsession about how much it costs. You'll never enjoy the vacation and the cost will never be justified because you're not enjoying the moment

As others have said and as you must really know deep in your soul - you're obsessed and you have an addiction. Whether it's the iPhone or something else doesn't matter. GO SEEK HELP. Sincerely. No one here is qualified to be your counselor or offer the advice you truly need which is one-on-one with a therapist.

You need to find something relaxing to take your mind off the stupid iphone...like fishing...well you get my point. Not another device that is going to consume your attention.

There's an app for that!

I can sorta relate. Maybe not the same OCD as the OP, as I do use my iPhone every day and enjoy doing so. However, I'm become slightly obsessed with keeping it mint. Sure, I got a case and a screen protector like many others, but sometimes I feel like that's not enough.

I take it out of my pocket like it's a baby kitten, I'm always aware of its presence it seems and if If someone is going to bump into me. I'm contantly paranoid I'll get stuck somewhere in the rain and trip the water sensor, ect. As a matter of fact I've purchsed a second inCase neoprene sleeve used for GPSs to keep in my car in case I get caught in a downpour on the way inside the house. That's retarded.

I kept my other phones in good condition and treated them well, but I would think nothing of walking down the hallway at work texting my wife with a cup of coffee in my hand. Now I think, "OMG WHAT IF I TRIP MY WATER SENSOR?!?!"

Honestly, I blame all of you for turning me into a paranoid a**hole! ;)

edit: kadman may have a point. I bet that would solve my issue.

I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

And then toss the iphone out the window as well. (make sure you take the sim out first)

It's not just a phone to me. I think just a phone would be something like a normal cell phone that just makes calls and does the basics... This iPhone is clearly not just a phone and it's consuming me like a drug. The only logical reason that I could come up with for acting this way is that I pay so much for these "phones". I could be paying almost NOTHING for an iPod touch and still be happy. If I had an iPod touch, I wouldn't have the internet everywhere, therefore when I'm out, I could enjoy life like a normal person instead of being so involved with a gadget. Anyone understand where I'm coming from?

Sounds like you've given this a lot of thought already and are really just using us as a sounding board or a way to vocialize your feelings/final decision. That's cool I don't mind, but I'm not sure this site is the best place to do so. Most of those that visit here do so because they like their Apple products enough to follow the latest news, etc.

Anyway getting back on topic. Every one of us is wired up a little differently. What bothers one person, might have little to now affect (effect?) on another. At the end of the day YOU are the best person to know what will make you happy. Clearly you're not happy with the monthly cost to own an iphone and it's bleeding into other aspects of your life, affecting (effecting?) your happiness there too.

Based on the information you've given, I would recommend getting a regular joe phone and an itouch (refresh soon?). However most of us are locked into 3 year contracts so will that even be an option for you? If it is, then do it. Sure you might miss some aspects of having internet everywhere, but as you've already stated you don't use it much. In the long run I think you'll be happier and that in the end is what's most important.
