Has anyone tried the new beta of Android 11?

I used to install betas but have long since decided it's not worth the hassle, especially as between versions there's negligible difference.

The past couple of years I’ve installed late versions (last or second last versions before final release) of the public betas because, well, I can’t resist playing with new software but have learned early versions are usually super buggy. I won’t touch the developer versions.

If only it was easier on Android phones to back up and restore like iTunes does with an encrypted back up. It would be a nice feature to have in the Android space. Then we could try things like the beta versions of Android 11 for a day then go back to exactly the way it was before installing the beta.

This, this, and this some more.

That being said, I haven’t really settled into a long term favorite phone configuration on Android because 1) It’s generally not my daily driver and 2) I’m boring as hell, only need a handful of apps on my initial home screen and just use the app drawer to find other apps as I need them. So setting up an Android phone as new takes less time than my iOS counterpart would.

The easy restore I find a bit more necessary on iOS because of the lack of that app drawer. I have the majority of my apps squirreled away into specific folders, as you need to do on iOS, else you have a dozen home screens, so having to recreate that would irritate the hell out of me. I don‘t really navigate to most of my apps and just get to them using spotlight search, but still don’t want to have pages upon pages of apps.

Oh my....
Google lens can copy text from phone to computer

Google mostly gets software right. I only wish they could get hardware a little more on par.

Side note, I've been back on the 4 xl for the past week coming from the s20 plus. Even though the hardware is a major step down, the software and camera are so good I would happily used this phone everyday. But my God the battery is such a joke. My phone is still settling and learning usage so it'll get better, but currently in not getting much past 4 hours of SOT. That's unacceptable in 2017, much less 2020.

yep.....the battery is a major issue for the Pixel. But IMHO what you get more than makes up for it in overall user experience. Personally I would choose the Pixel 4 XL over the S20 Plus.

I think I would to, which is very confusing. Holding both in hand, it's clear which one is the better device from a hardware standpoint. And it's not like one UI is bad, the phone flies and in most cases is faster than the pixel. But there's just something about the UI for Pixel phones that just feels so smooth and succinct. And I still maintain the camera just blows everything else away. I can't take a bad picture with it.

My 2 favorite phones are 11 PM and Pixel 4XL. For me....they nail the user experience better than most phones.
It is not just about hardware or specs. I also feel that these 2 phones nail the the most important first step when it comes to using a phone. The unlock and authentication process. Its is the first thing we have to do to use our phones.
IMHO Google does it better and faster with FaceUnlock because it goes straight to the homescreen. I wish IOS/FaceID gave us the choice to go straight to home screen if so desired.

In most cases, I agree. But in current mask wearing times, having a fingerprint sensor is nice.

Yeah, but I’ve even been wearing gloves when I’m out at the grocery store so both options aren’t great. I wish they’d add the option to bypass the home screen security if the phone detects my Apple Watch is connected, similar to one of the options available in Smart Lock on Android. I realize it’s not as secure but give me the option with the qualifier that I have to accept it.

I am finding my S20 very “snappy” so I’ve got no complaints about Samsung lag at this point. I did see my Note slow down a little tiny bit here and there the last couple of months, though, and I think sometimes where Samsung feels a bit “busy” to me is in their integration of marketing.

I find it creeping up on me a lot. I’ll just find myself inundated with notifications for stuff from their merchandising partners. I run a very tight streamlined system on all my phones with very few third party apps installed on any of my phones. But Samsung itself has a lot of tie-ins to affiliates.

I just got slapped in the face with that when I went to use their browser and was faced with a new End User agreement I HAD to accept to continue to use the browser! I read the whole damned thing and the amount of data I’m signing away not just to Samsung but endless unnamed affiliates while using the browser was really pretty infuriating.

Anyway, until something creeps in to slow it down, a Samsung phone these days is fast and smooth. Keeping it that way seems a bit more involved than it does on a Pixel, though.

I wonder if what really slows down a Samsung phone, or more accurately, the experience of using one, is that they have so many business partners with hooks into the different apps that come with the phone. Like on my S8, there was a filter on the camera that was affiliated with Sephora. I’m not an app designer so I can’t know for sure, but I wonder if at times some of the slowdowns I had on that phone’s camera app came from something sending data back to Sephora. That whole phone lagged like crazy, but especially that camera.

Even if that’s not possible, there’s the human fatigue involved. I’m forever fending off ads and overtures and notifications from their affiliates. That can add to the perception of bloat and lag when you have to stop and deal with something trying to get your attention when you’re really intending to just use your app and get on with things.

Then there’s the world of Apple.

iOS is supposed to be fast and smooth but I don’t know what’s going on with it these days.

It is so lucky my husband is now working at home. One day I went from Safari to my photos and my iphone 11Pro froze. Then crashed. Then it went into the beach ball of death screen. And stayed there. And got hotter and hotter and hotter. All the calluses I used to have from doing landscaping work are gone and I have nice genteel lady hands again, lol. Unfortunately that means they’re really sensitive to heat and the phone was burning my hands even in the case. It was really hot.

I was sick from Covid that day so I had to yell for one of the kids to take it down to the kitchen to put it on the granite in case it was going to overheat and melt down. And have them get their father if he was not in a meeting to do something with it. Fortunately he does not have such sensitive skin as I do, so he could hold the phone. He looked up how to reboot it.

Remember how rebooting was once simple on iOS and we all knew how to do it? Now it is like a Mortal Kombat move and you need to have another device open to look up how to reboot. At least for those of us over 50 with memory leaks of our own. 😆

Fortunately the reboot fixed it. I was sick so I wasn’t thinking on my feet. I was just panicked this thing was going to have a battery burst through its seams in a parody of the scene from Alien.

Overall though, my 11Pro is a really good phone. The camera gets the shots I want 97% of the time. That’s just amazing to me. I have every intention of keeping it and skipping the 2020 models. That’s why it overheating the way it did, almost curling iron levels of hot, gave me a real oh 💩 moment. If anything happens to this phone it’s getting replaced with an iPhone SE until next year.

On the Android side of things, I’d like to say the future holds a mid range Pixel in it for me. But I know I can not possibly give up the gorgeous perfect display on my S20. I like to watch movies on my phones. I haven’t seen a Pixel display yet that can touch this S20 display. Wow.

Sorry for the long and winding post. I don’t find my way onto the forum to post much lately. I haven’t had much to say nor much energy to say what little I could think of. But I did miss participating. Take care, all. Happy Mother’s Day to the Mums and Moms on board.

I've seen a white 64gb 4XL on eBay for £425. The seller says it's a replacement he got from Google yesterday, but has Android 11 on it. Why would you bother putting that on the day before you list it? Sounds suspicious and maybe he's been using it for a while.

I know full well my Note 10+ is (to me) the overall better phone. But can't stop looking at damn Pixels...

I never had a pixel so I can't comment much but I wouldn't get a pixel over a Samsung mainly due to SPAY, the convenience when I leave my wallet in the car I can pay from my phone at most locations. I will say One UI is kinda meh, so many features but I don't use many of them.

I also noticed how dim the pixel screen was according to flossy carter review and I wasn't impressed. Even if the pixel has better software the cutbacks are a little too much for me. I'll deal with the worst software but better hardware anyday.

Can't go wrong with the S20 Plus lineup! Enjoy :)

Dropped my Pixel 4 XL last week when I was out with my son trying to get him to learn to ride his bike. Shallow shorts pockets meant it slipped out as I was running after him. Top left of the front is where it impacted the ground. There is a small crack that reaches down to the top of the screen (around the clock area).

Tis the first phone I've ever damaged/dropped in all my years. Cost for replacement/repairs is around the £200 mark which is unfortunate but I'll have to get it fixed.

Had my Pixel 4 XL for 10 weeks. Ugh, love it so much. It's great. Could be a bit snappier, frankly, but otherwise there is very little missing from my needs.

And the camera... Just wow. It's so good that my wife has FINALLY succumbed and last week I picked her up a Pixel 4!

She was happy on Samsung with the S8 but it was starting to die - and the S20 didn't seem like enough of a camera bump so she finally to the jump to Pixel.

She likes the phone (doesn't love it yet) but absolutely ADORES the camera. The only thing I'm nervous about is we are both under lockdown - once she gets out and about properly, the battery life on the Pixel 4 will probably get her annoyed. My XL was fine before lockdown tbh.

If camera is a priority, then the s20 would disappoint her after using the Pixel. In well lit, still photos the cameras are comparable. In all other cases, the Pixel wins easily.

Well now this isn't good

Well we will see what happens. It will have no effect in the Pixel 5 since that is already in production for the most part.
But the Pixel 6 might be a different story. Maybe this will lead to change for the good? The pixel lineup needs to have a bigger battery. The camera has fallen behind Huawei recently
