As tbayrgs said, they did a long time ago before Samsung hardware was top tier like it is today. And they didn't sell well at all because they were only available online at full retail price at a time when everyone was still buying phones subsidized on 2 year contracts.

Back on the Pixel 4 XL for a while. I have such a weird love/hate relationship with this phone. The software experience is the best on any phone IMO. But the hardware feels substantially worse than my S20 Plus. The Pixel feels heavier, bulkier, and less refined. It honestly feels like a phone from 2018. And then you get into the software and despite the specs it is buttery smooth, everything feels polished, animations are great, camera opens fast and shutter speed is instant.

I hate to keep repeating myself, but if they would just improve hardware a little it would be great. And to an even further degree, if they were to release Pixel Software on S20 hardware, I would give them all the money.
I agree. I prefer the hardware of Samsung and the software of Google. Samsung flagships devices feel really premium in hand.

Using both side by side its pretty clear how much better the s20 is to be honest. I have a soft spot for Pixel software but One UI has come a long way. The total software and hardware experience on the Samsung is just much better. Google can only do so much with software.

As a complete package, the S20 is solid. I still can’t get into One UI, though. But, I’d admit, it’s drastically better than TouchWiz. My favorite Android skin is OxygenOS — it’s Google software with minor tweaks that I’d love to see in their stock software. I haven’t tried the OnePlus 8, yet. OnePlus cameras always disappointed me but I heard it’s much better nowadays.

Yeah the brief time I spent with a OnePlus the cameras were just so bad I couldn't get over it. I did really enjoy oxygenOS. From the reviews, it sounds like they made leaps forward with the camera but are still behind iPhones, Pixels, and even the latest Samsung devices.

They did...nearly 7 years ago in the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. So, it’s been a little while. ;)
Yeah, I had the HTC One Google Play version, loved it, later got the M8 and then hacked it with the Google Play ROM. I miss HTC, although I guess they're the ones responsible for my Pixel 4.

HTC made the first premium feeling Android phones IMO. They were the first to use mostly metal rather than cheap feeling plastic. But once Samsung decided to overhaul their cheap plastic design with a more premium feel they blew HTC out of the water.

HTC One M7 was the first Android handset I genuinely lusted over after brief dalliances with a Galaxy Nexus and Note 2. I picked up the Developer Edition directly from HTC and used it for the better part of a year. HTC was also quickest with software updates (only Google was faster) among OEMs at the time. Had a nice display and terrific aluminum chassis with a curved back that felt great in the hand. It was so long ago that it had a partnership with Beats for the audio on the device with the Beats logo on the back.

Great heft and feel in the hand. Awesome build quality.

Htc had one of the better Android skins as well at that time. Back then every Android skin was super heavy handed and full of bloat, but theirs was the cleanest that I remember. LG wasn't too bad either.

It was ahead of its time in some ways too. HTC introduced Blinkfeed Over on the left of the home screen, and which was very similar to what the Google feed later offered. The dual speakers were a trademark HTC feature and sounded great compared to the competition at the time. They also had their Ultrapixel camera—really big pixels to allow in more light and Zoes (sp?)—precursor to Apple’s Live Photo’s. Sadly it was only 4 megapixels and picture quality was lackluster at best. And of course the quirks of only having 2 capacitive navigation buttons with the home button being on the right.

To this day, it’s probably my favorite Android phone that I’ve owned.

Yup, the One M8 is up there with the Note 4, iPhone 4, and S10e for me. So wierd their fall from grace, they just couldn't compete with the new bezeless designs. Even now that Google bought them, they are still having problems with bezels on the Pixel line.

Loved the M8. Never had the M7 but the M8 was one of the most fluid android experiences I ever had in that day, and even for a few years after it was released. I just wish the camera was better.

Bought a grade A Pixel 4 with 12 month warranty for £430. It's now in a Spigen liquid crystal case.

Curious for those that have (or have owned both) the Pixel 4 and one of the S20 devices, which one do you prefer and why?

I have both, and I prefer my Pixel 4, which is funny as I only got it because it was discounted so much that I'm actually getting more in monthly credits for getting it than I'm getting billed for, so Verizon is basically paying me $10 a month to have this phone.

I was actually suppose to send it to Samsung as trade in for my S20, but thanks to the extended deadline because of covid, it gave me a month and half to use both devices, and I instead opted to keep it and sent in another phone and payed the difference.

Hardware wise, it's no contest, the S20 is a beast. But the Pixel is just so polished it makes the S20 feel almost like a beta product. And it's not just stock Android, but also how well 3rd party apps run and feel. It makes me even more disappointed that it looks like the Pixel 5 won't be another flagship.

I just wish I had gotten the 128gb model, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do.

Sorry, just had to chuckle a little bit as it seems like in some cases pixels are just being used as currency...
"How much for an s20 ultra?"
"Um, 2 pixel XL 4s or 3 regular sized 4s
😆😜

Haven't really messed with mine too much. It's pretty much set up, just haven't gone through the sim swap. Guess I don't like change 🙁

I'll always love the design of the phone. I don't care what anyone says. Sure, the front looks dated, but everything else is sexy. If I wait until the end of the year, I should be able to pick it up for $300 or less unlocked.

Interested in hearing your comments after you get used to it.

The software experience is excellence. I don't have huge asks from my phone. I wanted it to be smaller than the current crop of flagships which this does well, it's comfortable in the hand/pocket. The battery life is a little weak but I can only see this being a problem if you're using it a lot for videos and games.

I'm really happy with how it looks, I mean I don't even seen the bezel at the top when I'm looking at the screen.

Good to hear. This phone in Finland brand new is 799 Euros. I have not checked the price of used ones.
