It sounds like the reviews on this phone are mixed and everyone should just spend some time with it and decide if it’s for them. I plan on doing that when the price drops. However, it needs to be pretty good to pull me away from the Pro Max. I still think iOS is boring but this phone is just so smooth and is a beast in just about every way.

I disagree. Battery life isn’t something I personally prioritize.
It's not about priorities. Needing to charge twice to make it last a single day is an absolutely terrible battery. And no manufacturer should be putting products out like that. Anyone accepting of that is in a minority.

Well if I was to keep this Pixel 4 then I’d likely be in the camp of having to charge twice a day. Or at least, plug it in to top it up for twenty mins of an evening when I’m home from work.

Accepting it is what I’d have to do because I don’t really want to fork out for an XL, nor do I particularly want to handle a phone that big day to day when I find size and usability to be higher on my agenda than an unwieldy phone that houses a beastly battery.

I do agree though, that it’s unacceptable in 2019 to have a phone with such a small battery that does require two x charges, but if I want the latest and greatest Pixel experience I wouldn’t really have any other choice.

Thankfully, I see both iOS and Android as fairly equal, so I have a choice, but those people who get chest pains thinking about using an iPhone or Samsung ? don’t have much else to settle on.

I’ve said before that Google made a mistake with putting in a small battery. And again, it doesn’t bother me. My priorities are different. I prefer lighter phones—iPhones feel like behemoths because of their large batteries. They’re so uncomfortable to hold, unlike the Pixel. Hell, my iPhone 8 Plus is too damn heavy for me. Also, I buy what I can afford. I can afford a Pixel when it’s heavily discounted. I’ll be happy just to have a nicer phone.

Maybe the small 4 has poor battery life, but the Pixel 4 XL has outstanding battery life, absolutely zero worries. I dare say it's almost a 2 day phone. Best battery on a phone I've had in quite awhile.

And people on XDA and [H]ard Forums reporting the same excellent battery life.

Good news to hear the XL might have good battery life for a change. I was spoiled by the 3a battery life so any less than that would have been a disappointment. I'll be picking up the XL once the deals start hitting, probably next month.

Kind of explains why iPhone didn’t have it this year then. They’d want to make sure the rollout is done across the board.

iPad Pro ProMotion isn't across the board either, it doesn't even work in Safari where it matters and there's no option to force it on. Still not clear if ProMotion is actually motion processing marketing like on TVs and not true 120Hz panel. At this point Pixel 4 90Hz > ProMotion.

The current Face Unlock on the Pixel is less secure than Face Unlock in other devices I can buy right now because it lacks this awareness feature. And that’s objectively why the Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 is less secure to other Face Unlock on competing devices.

Awareness test (eyes open) is not a true liveness test compared to brain scan > fingerprint+heart rate > iris, etc. People have passed away with eyes open and Face ID would have no issue unlocking for a stranger if phone is pointed at deceased owner. More importantly is how Pixel 4 face unlock handles false positives that plague Face ID. That's a far greater security issue than eyes open/closed.

Got a case delivered today. Was only £4.99 but is pretty decent for the price!

What I like about the Pixel is even with a case it feels decent in hand and not too heavy.

Been trying hard to get used to the gesture navigation the past week I've had my Pixel 4 XL, but so used to a dedicated Back button, it's one of the things I've always liked about Android going back a decade, of always having a back button, and one of the reasons I hate iPhone, because they never had one.

Swiping to go back is the dumbest ****ing idea ever. So stupid. Like when in Messages, I'll swipe to go back, but then erase a text by accident. Or having to swipe more than once to have it actually work.

I liked the Android 9, two button navigation, wish we could go back to that. Right now I went old school to the 3 button nav, it's ok, and it sure as hell is quicker and works every time, compared to the lame gesture based navigation. But of the three, I prefer the Android 9 version best.

Looks like the Pixel 4 is still the camera champ, certainly in low light anyway!
In those limited scenarios, yes. And by some way. But I’ve seen plenty of night time landscape comparison shots where the iPhone clearly has more detail.

I’d like to know if Samsung are ever going to make an effort and get rid of that awful skin smoothing. Rumours of a 108mp camera will only excite clueless people who think megapixels mean everything.

At about the midpoint of my first day on a full charge. Like I do with any new phone, I've been messing with the phone a lot more than I normally would throughout the day. I also do believe battery life improves after a couple days of use. I have all the new features turned on, and I never use any of those supposed battery saving apps. Once I'm home I probably won't be on it very much so it'll more than comfortably get me through the rest of the day and evening without worrying about a top off.

I'm also in a position where I'm never far from a charger if I ever needed one for any phone/device, so I don't have the battery anxiety that some people have around here. Regardless, I'd be on pace to easily get well over 7 hours, probably hitting 8 hours SoT if I were to keep hammering at the phone and again this is on the first day from a full charge. That's better or on par with any device I've had in the last year (I've had a lot), except the Pro Max which probably gets me an extra 75 minutes or so of usage under the exact same personal usage patterns.

So today I put my sim in my Pixel 4 and gave it a thorough test.
I was off work today, so have used it as normal throughout the day, taking photos, uploading stories to Instagram, listening to music, checking emails and web surfing.

Nothing heavy at all. No games, no YouTube vid watching, no streaming content (music aside) and these are the results.

So it got me through the day (I'm in bed now) with the battery on 14%, but by and large this is quite low usage compared to a weekend day where I wouldn't be going to bed for at least another hour and would likely have been up earlier. I also didn't do any YT browsing today which is something of a norm for me most days.

All in all, quite disappointing.

That's a quite steady decline ?

I was going to post my XL 2 stats but figured they'd be irrelevant for this thread.

The 4s battery seems like it could be better then what it is. I remember past Nexus devices being a bit of battery drain also often requiring, I forget the name of the app, to put things to sleep and only check things at a defined time. Greenify?

All in all, quite disappointing.

That is actually terrible. Imagine what the battery life will be like in 12-18 months? ?

You would need to charge the phone at least twice a day.

Although I had a fantastic experience owning a Pixel 2 XL, the battery life of the Pro Max is sickening for the size of screen and features it packs. I finish most days with 40-50% battery life left after usage from 6am to 10pm.

Which is fantastic, but all phones have different battery life and the Pro Max is not comparable to the smaller Pixel 4 so pointless referring to it's battery.

Honestly, my Pixel 2 XL battery life has been fine. Not great, not bad - but fine.

I have chargers by my bed, at the office, in my car, in the kitchen - so I top up when necessary and have activated Battery Saver twice in the last 2 years.

If the Pixel 4 XL is basically similar, that's good enough for me personally and the way I use my device. Great to see all your feedback thus far, thanks all!!

The Pixel 4 XL battery life isn't similar to the 2 XL, it's SIGNIFICANTLY better.

My wife has the 2 XL, she's a light user, comes home in evening with like 30% battery left. My Pixel 4 XL in evening I have like 55% battery left.

I'll unplug with full charge at 7:00am, and put on the charger at 11:00pm, and the past week I been having like 50%+ battery left. I'm averaging like 7h+ SoT. This 4 XL is almost a 2 day phone between charges.

The difference might just be that one phone is 2 years older.
