TBH anyone buying the smaller Pixel 4 would probably realise after reviews and specs that battery life would be poor.

The 4 XL looks more variable, depending on usage and (dare I say it) luck :D

There's a difference between poor battery life reported in reviews though, and drain of 40% when not in use.

That's what is unacceptable. And reviews won't point to that because let's be honest, a lot of reviewers don't even use these devices day to day like the average Joe would.

I knew battery life would be pretty ropey, but the idle drain is unacceptable.

Idle drain could be a sign that your phone has a defective battery. The last time I had a phone with bad idle drain was my S6 Edge Plus after 2.5 years of usage.

That is my biggest complaint is the overall size. It just feels so dang small compared to last years Pixel models. I can live with the battery getting around 5-6 hours SOT. But the size for me might be the deal breaker.
That might actually be what sells me on it. I want a smaller Pixel than the 3XL but I want more battery life than the smallest 4 offers. The 4XL sounds like the best one.

However I likely won’t bite until it’s on the end of model year massive discount. Lol, for one thing I’m enjoying my Pixel 2 way too much again, funky pink display issues aside. i was not expecting that. I guess sometimes you just click with a particular device and that’s that. I’ve been really fortunate with my 11 Pro, my Note 10+ and my resurrected Pixel 2. I’m clicking so well with all of them.

I’m surprised to see Google now owns FitBit. I suppose everyone has known about that. I’ve had elder care issues that have kept me a bit scattered and not paying particularly close attention to tech rumors and news. So anyway I guess this is promising news. I hope they do something excellent with wearables and don’t let the whole thing atrophy like they do with other projects.

In other news, I ate some Halloween chocolate. I’m now hyperactive. Gonna go close some rings after I read a couple more posts.

I know it's anecdotal but my Pixel 3 XL I had last year and my Pixel 3a only drain a few % (3-5) overnight with everything on, including AOD.
Yeah standby on my Pixel 2 and 3XL are outstanding. On my Pixel 2 it needed to be cleaned up. There was something corrupted or messed up that made my batter seem bad. My husband fixed it for me. I know I should be fixing these things myself but it’s just one of those times we get by the best we can each day doing what our specialties are because we are so busy. I’m good at replacing display protectors and so I’m handling that. He’s good at fixing discombobulated tech so he’s doing that.

Just been reading about battery saver on the Pixel 4, something I haven't used yet.
I think, on Monday when I'm back in work, I'll put battery saver on when I leave my phone outside the office and see if that affects the idle drain throughout the day.

If something as simple as that can help preserve battery, then I could get by.
Will give it a go and keep my fingers crossed!

Jon Rettinger has a new video with his thoughts on iPhone 11 Pro vs Pixel 4. It's a very balanced and non-biased look at the two devices.

Apple really hit it out of the park with the 11 Pro. iOS on the other hand right now is needing a good scrub up. Even I, humble though my use case is, am experiencing RAM management issues. And jeez my iPhone camera is slow to launch from the home screen. So is the camera on the iPhone XR now and I guess that it due to something going on with iOS. There’s just a lot of annoying little things going on with the iOS side of the game right now and the fixes are trickling out.

But the iPhone hardware has never been better, in my experience of it. For the first time in a long time I feel, with the value I got in trade for my Xr, that I got my money’s worth on the more premium small model.

Apologies to keep banging on about battery... But there will likely be people interested in the smaller Pixel 4, so my experience might be beneficial to them.

Battery died at 9:20 before I could reach the charger. At 4% it just conked out. Lol.

So less than 3:45 SoT.

I'm in such a predicament now because I actually love this phone. I do prefer using it to my iPhone.
But this battery is shocking. I don't really want to overlook that poor of a battery performance.

I'm tempted to try an XL but then I'd miss out on the Chromebook which is only be selling anyway, but it reduces the overall cost of the device then.

Battery anxiety in 2019 is not excusable, Google dropped the ball big time here. I would give the xl a try if you like the phone.

Number one reason I've been getting the larger XL or plus size phones for years is number one for battery life.

I've never loved these huge phones I've been caring for years, but I do it just for the longevity of battery. Because historically these tiny little phones suck and can never last a full heavy days use. But after years of larger phones I do like it for media consumption and easier to see and fit more on the screen.

BUT, it is 2019 in these small phones are finally getting good battery life. Google should have put a 3,500mAh in the tiny Pixel 4, and have a 4,300mAh battery in the regular size Pixel 4 XL.

I consider the 3a to be small, and to have great battery life for its size. It’s not a flagship, so that doesn’t really help. And I’m sure by now everyone has considered it and would have one if it worked for them. Just sad the best battery life on any google phone is the budget 3axl from what I have read. It should be the 3xl or 4xl for the price they command. Best camera ever but no battery to support it on the small phone is a major bummer.

Some of the budget Android phones have excellent battery life, due to using lower powered but very efficient processor's, and lower res screens. They helps a ton.

And actually those phones are really good now, if running stock Android or Android One.

Yep. It’s ridiculous that the best battery life was always on cheap and underpowered phones until very recently. For $900+, you should get 2 day battery life unless you play Pokémon go all day. People have accepted less for so long. Hopefully since Apple stepped it up all the other brands will come out strong in 2020. Samsung is the only flagship that pushes the envelope in the android brand. I don’t really count huawei since most people haven’t heard of them, and they have no presence here.

Only thing I would be worried about, what if the iPhone 11 pro Max battery life and size is a one off? Meaning iPhone's are hit or miss each year on battery life. The XS Max had mediocre battery life, nothing great. And I believe it was the 6S Plus or one of or two of the Plus phones also had good but not great battery life. I know the 11 Pro Max is off the charts outstanding battery life, but I don't think that's typical for every Max and Plus phone, to be #1 battery champ phones of the year.

The iPhone 12 is supposed to be all screen, no notch, and thinner and lighter. Makes me think I could see Apple lessening the battery life a bit lower, to make the phone they want.

I'm the type of guy, saying make the phone thicker and heavy if need be to squeeze in a large battery. If I designed the Pixel 4 XL, it would have a 4,300mAh battery, 8GB RAM, and have a 512GB option, and that really shouldn't cost a ton more, but make the phone from very good, to excellent. Heck, I'm almost of the belief to shove in 5,000mAh batteries in flagships, go all out, who would complain for true 2 day battery life?

5g is going to be hell on batteries. Not only that, but it’s going to be even worse when it first launches. I think the silver lining could be buying a 5g capable phone with a huge battery, but running it in LTE instead. Apple will obviously get into the 90-120hz thing too. Can you imagine a fast refresh screen phone with first year 5g connectivity? Going to be dead ASAP without 4000mah+. I think 2020 could be a good year.
My budget android has a 5000mah battery, and it’s impossible to go back.

Apologies to keep banging on about battery...

Thanks for this, I was getting an itch to jump back to Android for my next phone, but will wait for a while longer. Bigger phones aren't for me, gave them a chance with the Moto X Style, S8+, 8 Plus and 2 XL. I think I read the 2 XL had issues with easier accidental touch inputs on the sides? But that did my head in and went to a smaller phone after.

We're only 3 weeks away from black Friday now. I'd have thought a few places would give money off to almost be on par with the Chromebook deal.
