How do you control screen brightness on your Pixel 4 / 4 XL?

To help battery life, I have read that Ambient display or Adaptive Brightness and that EQ thing too, can be a bit of a battery drainer, and it's best to just set your brightness yourself.

But there's no easy quick way to do that it seems? Other than going into Settings - Display, and sliding the bar up or down to get the specific % you want.

Is there an app, or what are you guys doing?
You can access the brightness control by sliding the notification panel up the screen...

Just claimed my free Chromebook.
Will be here in 60 days, apparently. But as soon as it's here it's just being sold.
Even if I only get £100 for it, it's £100 off the cost of the Pixel 4 which takes it to a price I'm comfortable with.

Impressed as always by the camera on this thing. There is no other camera as good as this for me. Portrait mode compared to the iPhone (and any other phone) is just streets ahead.

Just got a Pixel 4XL. It was a grand prize in a raffle at a local fair. So far I like it. It’s going to be our “family phone” since we all have iPhones already. Thought about selling it but it’s free and we’ll what the heck. It’s definitely a learning curve. But in 24 hours I have figured out most things. The one thing that’s annoying is the numbers attached to the key board and I keep putting numbers in my words. Any way to remove them?

Settings - System - Language Input - Virtual Keyboard - Gboard - Preferences

There you can toggle on or off the numbers on the keyboard. I love that setting, a keyboard without numbers on top is useless IMO

And congrats on winning the best Android phone of 2019. That's awesome. The XL version has respectable battery life, but the camera especially Portrait shots are outstanding, and Face Unlock is quick, just overall a great phone.

I can see how it can be useful but my fingers shake a little bit so it keeps activating them. But I will be honest. I am really liking the phone. Makes me want one for myself. Aarrggg

Most Android YouTube sites the big tech reviewers it's popular to knock and bash the Pixel 4, but to be honest it's probably the closest iPhone, Android offers, if that makes any sense.

You buy Pixel's for the smooth stock Android UI, and monthly security updates, as well as amazing portrait photos.

They’re not just bashing it because it’s popular to do. The criticism for the Pixel 4 is legitimate. That doesn’t mean it’s still not a great phone but there’s not some conspiracy out there to discredit the Pixel. Most of the tech reviewers love Pixels and are genuinely let down by how much Google dropped the ball this year.

She's a cockapoo. Mix of spaniel and poodle.
It's my sister's dog. She's in New York with her partner at the moment so me and my other sister are sharing looking after her. And our family lab, who has featured on here before. :)

Here he is trying to sniff out the pudding tonight. :D

I love your Lab! haha. Typical Labs, where there's food...there's a Lab :)

I agree. Every youtuber review and online review I've ready (or watched) say the phones are fantastic, aside from the poor battery life on the smaller one and soli not really doing a whole lot right now. The main criticism they all seem to have is that the phone is just too expensive for what it offers. It's a great phone but probably needs the price dropped by $100-$200.

That’s pretty much what I’ve been saying as well. Google themselves have just confirmed as much by dropping it $200 for Black Friday only a month after it’s release. When you compare it with the other phones in the $1000 class it just doesn’t match up. And that doesn’t mean it’s a bad phone at all, it just means it’s no priced correctly.

Google needs to decide what they want thr Pixel to be. If they want it to be a continuation of the Nexus program then drop the price by $200-300. At that price point the Pixel line is great. Or, if they want it to be an iPhone/Note competitor, keep the $1000 price but include the chipset/battery/build/ram/features to justify it. Currently they floating somewhere in between those two strategies and it’s not working.

The delayed rollout for the security update is suspicious. Makes me thing they’re unsure of something in it to be staggering the rollout like this. Wonder if they’re afraid of how the 90hz drop to 45% will affect battery life.

Oh. I've had the November patch for well over a week now?
I am in the UK though, if that makes a difference?

Great pics, those shots look AMAZING. I assume that's London or some other English big city? ( oops, just saw it's Manchester, which is like 150+ miles from London? )

That Christmas mug looks delicious :)

It’s a good review and I suspect it’s similar to how many people will feel after owning it for a few weeks. The phone is just simply priced wrong. The big deterrent for me is the outside screen brightness. That was my biggest issue with the Pixel 3. I spend a lot of time outdoors taking pictures and there were several occasions where I simply couldn’t see the screen. That’s something Google has to fix and would actually affect my day to day with the device.

It just blows my mind that no one at Google ever though, maybe we should just price these at BF prices to start with. They are pretty much discounted year round outside of the first month or so. If they were priced at $599/$699 to start with everyone would be raving about how awesome they are and how good a deal it is.

They could then just offer something smaller around BF, like a $50 credit etc. I think everyone would be happy with this arrangement, and I imagine they'd sell more of them.

I'm still undecided if I'm going to go with the 4 XL or the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren 5G (that's a mouthful). Leaning towards the 1+ at this time.

My Pixel 4 has developed scratches on the screen and I’m furious. I think it’s come from having both my iPhone and Pixel in the same pocket for all of 20 seconds.
I normally put them back to back but didn’t on this occasion.

It’s more of a smear than a scratch but it will not buff out. Anyway I had a screen protector delivered today in the hope it would cover it, and it has.
It’s a pretty good protector as it is slightly curved but doesn’t cut out the ‘notch’ that’s hidden in the forehead like some others.

Also picked up a new clear case as the one I had originally bought when I got the phone was a bit bulkier, and the buttons were really difficult to press. This is just right.

I was gifted an iPhone XS unexpectedly, so I will not be purchasing the 4 XL, sadly. But I will definitely be keeping an eye on the Pixel line, and perhaps the Pixel 6 will be the one for me when I upgrade again in two years. :)

Or sell the brand new XS, and would probably be enough to purchase a BF Pixel 4 XL
