Well I got the 4 XL last night. Feels like a clear upgrade from the 3.

The only issue so far was that even after turning off iMessage and even deregistering it, iPhone users weren't able to text me. My girlfriend had to delete the thread and turn iMessage on and off to get it to work. But I put that more on Apple than anything.

When I switch phones I always turn off iMessage then turn my iPhone off. That has worked for me so far :)

It's one of those things that, as an Apple user, makes me hate them. I like their products a lot but it just seems shady. And they know it.
It’s not that big of a deal imo. I’ve had to deal with it a bunch of times too. Sometimes the transition is totally smooth, sometimes not, even though one follows the instructions to the T. In which case you just fiddle a few switches and done. It’s like back in the day having to kick your old CRT TV once a year when it flakes out. Annoying but honestly not more than that. And definitely not enough for me to hate a company and think they’re shady. But hey, that’s me.

I absolutely without a doubt think they do it on purpose. I'm sure they can put some R&D into it and make it a whole lot more seamless. But they don't. Because they know it's something that locks people in. Text messages are more important with every passing day. People communicate by that for work. If you miss something because Apple hijacked your messages, that can be a big problem.

Yeah the worst part is that I have anxiety over the fact that I might still be missing texts, which sucks. Not the Pixel's fault though.

I agree, and not looking to start a debate ... just a thought to ponder. Every year, Google pays Apple over $10 billion in order to be the default search engine on Apple devices. Google collects the data, Apple readily accepts the money. Does anyone really believe that Google doesn't do exactly the same thing with the data from the Apple devices?
Fair point but we can agree that scale is different... android phone /google photos/ chrome / google search give google much better and valuable profile than only search from iphone... just saying, I am not here to start flame, actually I am strongly considering new samsung galaxies this year as ios 13 is total disaster on my iphone 7 and new iphones aint my cup of coffee (regular ip11 is a heavy brick, pros are irrationally expensive)... for the first time in my life, i do strongly consider android phone as viable option! (Still many questions to be answered:))

Unfortunately, while your assumption makes sense, it isn't necessarily true and we should assume Google makes more money on a android user than iOS. Google services exist on iOS and the data is collected there as well. An iPhone user could easily opt for all Google services and "make Google more money" than a android user on a galaxy phone that opts for all Microsoft services.

As a side note, it is funny everyone here frets about security and argues over it as a central issue within the Google vs iOS debate....yet many if not most of you will then turn around and continue to use Facebook....which will track your every move through the web. The biggest offending company we should be concerned in regards to privacy is the one not argued for or against on these forums.

Not to interject in this discussion, but I will say there’s a reason why all of Googles apps are available for iOS whereas Apples apps aren’t available on Android. It’s because Google is a data mining company first and foremost. Their greatest interest is gathering data. Making their hardware or software division more profitable than Apples is far down the list of their priorities.

Picked up a 128gb black XL today. It's not a bad phone, but man the screen really is dim compared to my 11 Pro Max. Funny thing about iMessage tho. I had turned it off well before I had taken my sim out and yet for some people (not all), their iPhones were still trying to send as iMessage. Strange that some phones take longer to switch over than others. It must have something to do with server propagation.

Those of you turning off iMessage, did you also go to the Apple website and see-register with iMessage? I found that helps even though you shouldn’t need to do both.

I turned it off on the phone, and to double check, I went to the site. Once I got the code the 2nd time, it told me the phone number wasn't registered with iMessage .

I've been dealing with the iMessage issue for years. I've found ALL the solutions to be inconsistent. Now, I just turn off iMessage a few hours before I plan to remove the sim from my iPhone. De-registering and all that seemed to have zero impact. Sometimes it works flawlessly, other times I have to tell my iPhone contacts to delete prior conversations and hit "send as text" if it's still sending as blue/iMessage. Once they do this a few times, it seems to stick. It's really annoying to have to tell my contacts to do this nonsense. Apple could easily fix this but that wouldn't be in their best interest. I'm sure some people get frustrated with not being sure they are getting all messages so they panic and go back to their iPhone. It's an evil genius tactic by Apple.

I've been switching back and forth from my iPhone regularly over the last month and haven't had any iMessage issue yet. I'm mad at Apple at the moment due to iCloud issues. Despite following instructions to a T it still deleted photos both locally and in iCloud...all is well, got them back. Apple makes it into such a pain. Back on my Pixel full time. You know, where we can just drag and drop like a normal person.

The weirdest thing about the iMessage issue is how it's different for each person. My girlfriend had to delete the thread, turn iMessage on and back off to get it to work. My mom had no issue texting me.

Anywho, really enjoying the Pixel 4 XL. The battery issues were overblown. On my second run, I pulled 7.5 hours SOT. That'll do. It's no 11 Pro Max but I also spent $500 less so I guess I'll deal with like 2 hours less SOT.

Camera is amazing as well. No matter how much is talked about the iPhone closing the gap, which is accurate, Pixel photos still just "look better". Having night mode on selfies is huge too.

Does it mount like a drive when you plug it into Windows? I haven't tried that.

Exact same thing. I was able to get messages from my mom while the Pixel was still setting up...my girlfriend, on the other hand had to wait nearly an hour or two before they would send as sms by default.?‍♂️

Yes it does. You need to enable USB file transfers in the phone settings and then the phone will appear in Windows as a drive / folder. You can then go into folders and copy / delete files as you wish.

not for me. when I went from XS max to s10 plus I just switched off iMessage and was fine...this seems an odd thing to happen as it shouldn't.
Once in awhile it does happen for some reason.

A couple passing observations in regards to how this phone matches up against the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

- Compared to the Pro Max, this phone is a joy to hold. It feels over 50% lighter. Also, the frosted glass on the back of the 4XL has a little better grip to it than the Pro Max, where I always feel like it's going to slip right out of my hands.

- The battery life isn't nearly as bad as the YouTube tech reviewers would make you believe, but it's nowhere near the iPhone 11 Pro Max. But at almost $500 less than the Pro Max, I can deal with it.

- I bummed around this weekend with the phone but took a lot of pictures, and not once did I think "Oh man, I wish I had the ultra wide", but I did zoom in on things and they turned out amazing. Would it be nice if it had the Ultrawide? Of course, but I think Google did kind of have a point about zooming being more important. Great example is when I go to my daughter's basketball games. I don't need an ultrawide, but I have a major need to zoom in and get some good looking pics.

Are you looking to replace your iphone with this or running both at the same time?

I’m surprised I haven’t seen people talk about or post pics of the astro mode. Do people not bother with it?

I'm going away for a few days soon and will be mostly using my Note 10+ for pics. If they don't impress me like Pixels have previously done, I might well pick up a 4XL for my summer trip now they're coming down a lot.

There's nothing like a picture taken from a Pixel phone. Amazing what they can do.

I'm going to only run with one.
That’s the same choice I had to make when I had both. I liked a lot about the Pixel and the potential cost savings (at the time I got the Pixel 4 xl for $700) but in the end the battery life trade off and poor LastPass integration was just too much to get past. But this was early in the Pixel 4 lifecycle and I’m sure they’ve improved battery somewhat with updates in that time.

If for whatever reason the s20 doesn’t impress I may try to pickup the 4 XL again since the price has fallen so far. I have no complaints with the Pro Max but it’s just boring.
