100% not a bad unit. That’s how all of them are. Max Weinberg, the annoying little twit from Android Police, posted on Twitter a few weeks back that his friend played with a dev unit from a Google employee and the thing that stood out the most is that it didn’t fold flat and said it felt like it would break if you did fold it flat.
Max Weinbach. Max Weinberg is the famous drummer haha.

So here is the tweet. Okay, this is totally unacceptable IMO. If true this feels like an unfinished product. That absolutely should not be happening.

I've given this a lot of thought lately and I'm going to pass on all foldables until they offer dust resistance. It sucks because I really want one but it just won't work with my lifestyle. Waterproof bag cases or a second cheap device are concessions I'm not willing to make.

Interesting! When I had a Fold 2, it was just flat out bad to use. The outside screen was completely pointless, meaning I had to open it anytime I wanted to do something. When it was open, it was great and I 'got' foldables completely.
But for a quick reply to a text whilst waiting for a coffee at work etc, it just got annoying opening the thing all the time.

And don't start me on Samsung cameras 😅. Never been for me. I think the Pixel Fold looks great, but I just don't think it's in my price range currently. Particularly with all the tech upcoming in Sept / Oct so I'll hold out.
That was my experience with the Fold 4. Great user experience once it was open. I didn't mind the crease in the middle at all. But the outside display was great for reading notification. But I found it useless to respond to anything. I always found myself open the phone to use it.

What I really want from the Pixel Fold is the great Pixel user experience and the Pixel camera! Then of course never have to worry about the battery life.
Then it really needs to fold flat......no matter if it makes it easier to pick up @Bkdodger ;)

Can't believe it actually exists! And the eye watering sticker shock 😖 don't know if I'm actually going to go for this, I'd likely end up breaking the thing at work. At 2k it'd probably stay home and if that was the case, might do the tablet and grab the 7 pro or perhaps 7a.

My XL 2 needs an upgrade bad, the google store actually crashed my browser while I was checking things.

The fold looks interesting however.

I'm already having second thoughts LOL.

Okay let me revise. I'm going to pass for this summer. Come fall I will debate it. 😆

And you were excited about it less than a week ago… anxiously to have it in your hands! Who would of thought this would have happen... Lol, what a strange turn of events and its not officially out yet..

Lack of dust resistance is a huge obstacle for me. Otherwise I would probably get it without a doubt.

ive had every iteration of the Samsung Fold and took all of them to our beach house in Destin. I have not had a single issue. Just don't bury your phone in the sand and be careful and you will be fine.

Damn autocorrect got me!

I’m sure it sounds like I’ve been overly critical of this phone but I really want it to be good. I’d love to come back to a Pixel but I basically told myself I’m staying with an iPhone until a foldable comes out that checks all the boxes. I’ve reached the point where I think slab phones have hit their peak so for me there’s no point in switching until I’m ready to switch to a foldable. I would already be there with the Galaxy Fold if their form factor didn’t suck so much.

I'm looking forward to running it though the paces ...concerns are how will the battery perform...it being split in each half of the phone and all ...I saw a video about the hinge and how the phone is sealed off each side and why they felt would be good for daily usage ...and hopefully they have plans for some multitasking additions...

I think the Pixel Fold will be just fine... it would be great to have more multitasking options, but I rarely find myself using 3 or more apps on screen when multitasking on my Galaxy Fold.

I understand, but less than a week ago... you were willing to commit to the Pixel Fold regardless of the lack of dust resistance because how anxiously you been waiting for a wider cover display and unfolding landscape form factor.

And @aggie99 mention, he's been on beaches with their Galaxy Fold... with no issues. Why not at least give it a try? Add some insurance to it and go from there.

To each their own, but it’s always baffling to me when people say to just add insurance as if that’s a good solution to a phones faults. People are already spending $1800 on the phone, if you add $15 a month over the typical 2 year cycle of the phone you’re essentially making it a $2160 phone, which is insane. Phone insurance is never a smart financial move IMO. Think about it…if the screen repair cost say $600, it makes more sense to risk paying $600 then paying $360 for nothing.

And this is definitely not an attack on you at all. I see the phone insurance thing mentioned a lot (I’ve probably even said it in the past).

Honestly I think that's not a good idea at all. I find it nearly impossible to not get some sand on my phone in some manner regardless of how much I baby it. If it works for you great but I never would chance it personally.

Maybe just wait for reviews? Not like they are likely to sell out
Has nothing to do with reviews. Lack of dust resistance is simply a fact with all foldables to date.

Yes, my desire for a foldable makes this all more complicated and conflicting. I keep waffling. I want one badly but know it won't work for me on a beach.

I mean just because it has worked for them and they are comfortable with it doesn't mean I would feel the same way. I personally would never use a foldable on a beach unless it was inside a waterproof pouch. And I really would prefer to avoid using one of those if possible.

The common sense answer is this: I don't need the GPF in Italy this summer. When I get back and beach season is over (September) I can contemplate the GPF and GF6. Then I wouldn't have to deal with the beach until next summer and by then maybe I would be okay using a second cheap Android device.

I'll figure this all out when I'm back. For now I'm not getting it is all I've concluded so far. I'll read the reviews, handle the device in person on 6.27 at AT&T, and go from there.

Ditto, never treated my Folds 1 to 4 any different to any other phone when it comes to beach etc

Abu Dhabi must be one of the sandest cities in the world and I use to have lunch on the beach every work day for 7 years and never had an issue with any phone and that's before they had IP ratings.

I always have a bunch of tissues or bog paper stuffed in my front pocket where my phone sits, never had a problem

Ah passing the tissue tests! Lol that is important to me with my allergies. I always have tissues stuffed in my pockets and purse.

It's not like I have a snotty problem or dribble a lot LOL its more for wiping sweat of my glasses being in hot climes

My wife hates me using bog roll and having to pull it out of my pockets before washing :)

I'm not sure all the fuss about dust and even water resistance to a degree, although the later seems more important for my wife who spills wine on a regular basis.

The girls that once use to drop their moto razor down the loo are probably now wearing knickers so big the phone would bounce off them and over the cubicle door :D

There were plenty of flip, slidy KB Blackberries and even tri axis screens on JasJars phones of old and we never had concerns

Think the dust is a bit overstated and there is more risk to smashing your screen or back of your phone in your pocket by walking in to a corner of a desk or table than lbs of sand in your inner screen :)

YMMV

I can definitively say I'm not getting any foldable until they are dust proof. I know I keep changing my mind but I am certain of this now. I won't be bringing it up again moving forward in this thread. Whomever makes the first dust proof foldable available in the United States will get my money one day.

Somebody on the Vergecast said something that I feel is really accurate with the GPF. "I can't wait to see the next version." I do think the GPF would be a lot more alluring with thinner inner bezels and a larger screen. (Say 8".) Something about 7.6" has never sit right with me. (Ditto the Galaxy Fold.)

Adding insurance will help relieve any doubts... some Fold owners don't have insurance, heck... I didn't have any insurance when I had my Fold 2. I didn't care for it.. and I didn't even need it either.

But when the Fold 4 came around.. I decided to get insurance, not necessarily for the Fold faults. But more so if I caused any damages by dropping it or whatever. And that's what I was trying to advise @blairh.. if their worried about any damages caused by dust. Insurance will help get a replacement and once a replacement comes around, sell it and go with a slab.

But at least, they gave it a try.
