Just got my 15" BTO 1TB 2.9 460 same scratch as others have reported. I called and asked to speak with a manager, sent him this picture and a link to this thread. He is going to put in a request to send me a replacement before having me send this one back.

It may be the numerous replies you've made in this thread that might give one such an impression. If you really do not give a hoot, perhaps it may behoove you to take your own advice.

Dunno why you continue to quote / name me, given that you don't seem to like what I have to say.

Seriously, how does Apple expect this to be acceptable. I've had my rMBP for almost 3 years and I don't even have a scratch that bad.

I would not pay that kind of money and accept that scratch. Maybe if it was on the bottom I wouldnt care but that's like in your face.

Well, I do understand you need for unblemished possessions. For quite a few around here, being born rich results in an over inflated sense of ones importance. Ya'll have no real need for a MacPro or a Mercedes Benz SUV, but it sure must impress Wall Street lackeys and hot bits of stuff on trips to Tiffany's

This is a thread about a manufacturing defect. There are many people posting here who are affected. That's why they have an interest in the subject. The defect is negatively influencing their product experience, something which Steve Jobs always tried to enhance. He would never have tolerated a manufacturing process which put the same scratch in the same place on countless new computers. Heck, he wouldn't have accepted a chronic blemish like that on the packaging. Hence, this situation is an example of how Apple is gradually straying from the original core philosophy which made it different from other companies.

You claim that this is a trivial matter and that you're above thinking about such meaningless things, yet you come here and post over and over, telling us about your income, telling us about your bicycle, telling us about your log cabin in the woods; basically, telling us about things that have nothing to do with this thread.

You say the people here should "get over it, get a life, and move on". Perhaps you should take your own advice.

If a scratch negatively affects product experience, so be it, though I can't help but feel some here are taking Marketing 101 way too seriously. Folks who do have a real use for what a MacPro can do probably don't give a hoot.

Oh, and here's my daily ride in use, touring Koh Yao Noi. Probably less than pristine when I bought it 13 years ago, I was not bothered; I needed transport. It has picked up plenty of scratches since…… likewise the Mac Mini I bought 7 years ago, and is occasionally transported by bicycle or motorcycle.

Was it really necessary for you to make unfounded attacks on the economic classing of people just because they don't want a damaged item straight out of the box?

For most people, a product being worn through personal use is one thing, but arriving scratched through a faulty manufacturing tool is quite another.

He can't help himself, really. He's salty and apparently believes that anyone with more money than he has (judging by his posts, he really wants everyone to know that this is not a high bar) is completely and utterly entitled. For some reason he also equates owning a Mac Pro (perhaps he meant MBP since this is the MBP forum) to the same level of wealth that it takes to own a Mercedes SUV and jewelry from Tiffany (bought my first MBP when I was driving a nearly 10 year old Honda Civic). It's odd, I've never seen somebody brag and denigrate others so much about how much money they don't have in comparison. The lack of money is actually a virtue for him and also a cudgel to be used against others.

Ran into some trackpad issues (dead zones). Going to mention the speaker grille scratch as well and try and get it replaced.

Got my SG 256/2.6/460 today, and of course I draw the lotto and have the scratch. It's very apparent in decent lighting, but I'm going to play with the Mac a bit to see if there are any other issues-- if not, I may just let it go. I intended to put a decal over the area anyway.

Anyone have experience getting the scratch warrantied from Apple, when NOT purchased from them directly? (My SG is from Adorama, and they don't accept returns if the machine is working fine).

Just got my replacement #2 today. Finally! No scratches or chip mark! Let's hope I don't run into any software issues.

Mine (BTO, 2.9/2TB/460), was marked as shipped within the last hour or two! 10 January estimated delivery via UPS 2-3 Day shipping, but holding a tiny crumb of hope for Friday.

Adorama and B&H have strict return policies for laptops (must be defective, or unopened). They had amazing deals for the MBP-- $100-300 off plus no tax out of NY. I've attached a pic of my scratch.

I heard users complaining that not only the scratch was an issue but also the touchpad with dead spots on it. I have no idea how those scratches were caused but I wouldn't wanna take the risk of a dying touchpad or any other parts in the near future. especially given the fact that many parts cannot be replaced easily.

Of course there's Apple care and also a chance that there is no connection between the scratch and dead spots on some users touchpads...it's just my personal opinion.

I asked for a replacement of my SG 2.9/455/1TB on Dec 12th and received the new one on Dec 28th. 16 days turn-around isn't bad for a BTO, I must say.

The previous one had a defective fan and no scratch. The new one is flawless (knock on wood!) and doesn't have any scratches either.

Has anyone else had comsmetic problems like this with your new 2016 macbooks? what did apple do? i know they would likely just replace it but i dont want to wait another month AGAIN :(

I have the same problem, just got my new MacBook Pro 15" opened the box and noticed this immediately, box was all intact with no damage and sealed in plastic. I purchased this from Adorma, so I contacted Apple due to adorama's return policy. I told Apple about this discussion so they can look into possible manufacturing errors. Looks like we have the same scratches in the same locations. I have one under the right speaker that is a little larger and more obvious than the one on the left side.

Did you purchase from Apple or an authorized reseller, who did you contact to get a replacement. I have been buying mac computers my whole life, and never had a problem, ever. Wonder what is happening here and why so many problems. You could buy a used car for what they cost.

Got my third MBP today. First one went back for blown speaker Boot Camp issue (it had the under speaker scratch), second one went back because the N key would only register if pressed firmly from the top two corners (also had the scratch), and now the third model, which surprised the tech again when I bet that the scratch would appear yet again on the sealed model they brought out, and to nobody's surprise this new one's got it too, albeit a little bit smaller. I told them I'm letting it fly in lieu of getting an otherwise perfect machine, but that people on here are 200+ posts deep talking about receiving their third and fourth replacements for this scratch, and they took notes and asked where the thread was located.

Tons of returned models for just the scratch must really be a thorn in their side now and I'd imagine they have to be trying to fix it - but who knows. They were reluctant to allow me to return my defective keyboard model because it would be "yet another unsellable machine" and instead wanted me to send it off for repair. No way, not for $3500 and three days left on my return period. I said if that were the case, to process the return immediately. Ended up finding an in-stock model with my specs in Boston so I drove the hour to get it. Hopefully the last time I'll have to do this.

These have all been SG 2.9/1TB/Pro 460 models.

same scratch here, below the left speaker. It's only noticeable in a certain angle with a proper light. Thinking about keeping it... I'm not in USA.

Hopefully, there will be a product to repair this kind of scratches :D

Specs : SG 15'' 2.9/1TB/460

Had this 13 inch base model for a couple of days now. The first one I got had a scuff on the bottom case. I thought this second one was perfect until I noticed this. It only looks bad when I shine a light on it but now I know its there it will be going back, in normal lighting it looks nowhere near as bad as that though.
