I bet if you looked hard enough you can find a scratch or ding on any new car. Just bend down and check the fender wells or under the front bumper.

And no one is sticking up for Apple. They are pointing out that a small cosmetic issue does not mean the computer is not a sound device that will great work for years. Likewise a cosmetically perfect device does not mean it does not have internal issues.

If it worked perfectly and did not have issues that many others are having with weird graphics, poor battery life, ... I would definitely lean toward keeping a machine with a small scratch or paint imperfection.

Okay - fine .. if you really want to pick apart my comment.

This is like buying a new car with a hole in the seat.

So much Apple shilling going on here. They messed up and have a manufacturing problem - obviously. So many people have posted photos of different laptops with the same scratch. NOT OK for a brand new product that costs thousands of dollars.

Based on your reply I realized we look at things differently. Your four point rebuttal demonstrates that you are only focusing on the scratch. The scratch is all you see. You open the box, see a scratch and that's it. No matter how minor, you can't get past it. If you choose to accept the scratch as you say "It's a compromise. A compromise on standards". I respect your decision, but don't agree with it.

I am not being easy. I will notice the scratch, and depending on how severe it is, I would either return the item or go about my business. Based on the photo provided here, I feel this particular scratch is minor. There was another post about a speck on a trackpad. Again so minor you could barely see it. Not enough for me to obsess over it. I buy laptops to do work not put on display or admire because it is flawless. A laptop is portable and will most likely get scratched or dinged. I have never seen a laptop that did not have some sort of wear from setting it down and picking it up.

I respect your point of view. Thank you for attempting to correct my crazy mental attempt to rationalize this.

You don't get it. It's not about the damn scratch.

It's about the contract. The agreement. The principle.
If it had an extra key with my name on it courtesy of Apple I would also send it back.
If it had two touchbars I would also send it back.

If my four points bother you make it two:
- Did you sign up for that scratch?
- Do you want it there?

Or make it just one: is it reasonable to expect a new laptop to come with a scratch?

Scratch that... Just answer me this: if you bought as a gift for your wife or kids or whomever you love. Would you want them to receive it that way? Just answer this question.

Maybe it's because I studied law. I'm a stickler for upholding contracts. But I find your psyche very interesting.
If I offered you two laptops. One with a scratch, one without. Which one would you take?

I'm writing this on a dinged laptop. Do you think I care that it's dinged in one corner?
The ding does not impair its function. It works fine other wise. I don't even notice it as I'm looking at the screen.
More importantly: I did not pay for that ding. It happened because of my own negligence. It did not come with it.

But hey, enjoy your laptop.

Just don't tell other people that they're obsessing or that they should get over it.

There's nothing wrong with them wanting a replacement.

(There's also nothing wrong with you wanting to keep it. I just wanted to counterbalance the main arguments here.)

I currently own the late 2014 rMBP base model. (last one b4 the force trackpad).

I bought the base 15 2016 model

I returned it for 2 reasons

1. Exact same scratch under right speaker grill ( I **would** have returned for this alone...just crap)
2. Performance. I have Large Xcode Project as a developer and it compiles and builds 30 seconds faster on my base 2014 model. Blew my mind.

I am a huge Apple fanboy but there is no denying they ignore the Macs. Iphone and iPads are the money ad margins.

I will choose to speak with my wallet.

Personal decision.

Fortunately, I didn't have any scratch issues with my 15" mbpwtb.
I did however have a dead pixel outta the box (A problem that I have had with previous Macs, iPads, iPhones). I swear Apple refuse to admit they have a quality control issue when it comes to this.

Thankfully they replaced my MBP and all is well so far - Except the pretty poor battery life. Think we'll ever see any improvements through future updates?

Might also add, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to any issues with my Apple products. If its not perfect, I raise the issue. Some call me pathetic, but should you not expect perfection when you pay a premium price?

Update: Apple shipped my BTO replacement unit, and it's getting here today which is well before the January 3, 2017 estimate. I'm really impressed with their customer service, who encouraged me to do the return for replacement in the first place.

The analogies on this thread are really entertaining. Regarding BMWs, I waited 3.5 weeks for a custom build 2016 X5 and upon delivery noticed the front quarter panel gaps with the hood were not parallel and not flush with the A-pillars- a cosmetic shock coming from a Lexus (remember the ad where they roll a metal ball along perfectly parallel panel gap lines). Anyways, my wife and I accepted delivery because it's a friggin truck/SAV, and we were happy about the performance and design features. Gave those workers in Spartanburg, SC a break. If final assembly was in Germany though, we'd expect much higher precision.

Interesting statement. On the one side I see your point and as a German it makes me proud to hear that. On the other hand a BMW should have the same quality no matter where it's manufactured but yeah in reality it can be a different story. Makes me wonder what'll happen if Apple starts producing iPhones in the US :p:D

Regarding the topic: my second replacement has arrived and it's scratch-free, yay! I hope they fixed the production problem and from now one all units are scratch-free.

If it was even a brand new Ford Fiesta I wouldn't expect a scratch on delivery, and I've had "BMW's".

When did you request your replacement & how long did it take to ship out?

My return request was around 12/5, but Apple doesn't process the replacement order until they receive your returned unit. They got my return around 12/12 and estimated replacement for Dec 21 delivery which turned into Jan 2017, then surprise early delivery today.

Fantastic! Apple and Fedex delivered my new 15" BTO MBP before Christmas. Glad to report this replacement has no scuff marks/scratches and retains a perfect finish. Now, I will test the Radeon 460 and battery life. I put an iBlason hardshell plastic case on it for protection.

Just received my MBP today. Not a scratch to be found, much to the chagrin of @Micky Do, I'm sure. Seems like most of the ones with scratches below the speaker grills have 512 GB SSD's.
Lucky you then; dunno why you think I give a hoot.

But I still fail to understand the obsessive mentality of those upset by a minor cosmetic blemish…. Why bother, I reckon; get over it, get a life, move on.

then don't understand it and be happy with lackluster QA your choice

Scratches are diminishing the resale price, make the companies look like they don't give a crap and thankfully Apple is correcting this.

Has anyone else had comsmetic problems like this with your new 2016 macbooks? what did apple do? i know they would likely just replace it but i dont want to wait another month AGAIN :(

Seriously, how does Apple expect this to be acceptable. I've had my rMBP for almost 3 years and I don't even have a scratch that bad.

I would not pay that kind of money and accept that scratch. Maybe if it was on the bottom I wouldnt care but that's like in your face.

This is a thread about a manufacturing defect. There are many people posting here who are affected. That's why they have an interest in the subject. The defect is negatively influencing their product experience, something which Steve Jobs always tried to enhance. He would never have tolerated a manufacturing process which put the same scratch in the same place on countless new computers. Heck, he wouldn't have accepted a chronic blemish like that on the packaging. Hence, this situation is an example of how Apple is gradually straying from the original core philosophy which made it different from other companies.

You claim that this is a trivial matter and that you're above thinking about such meaningless things, yet you come here and post over and over, telling us about your income, telling us about your bicycle, telling us about your log cabin in the woods; basically, telling us about things that have nothing to do with this thread.

You say the people here should "get over it, get a life, and move on". Perhaps you should take your own advice.

I switched to this wallpaper too after seeing these photos. It's an Apple wallpaper from Yosemite, but looks much more ruddy on my computer.

Yeah it didn't look good on mine tbh. I don't know why it looks so much better on his. I have a late 2013 rmbp 13"
