I drive a Lotus Evora and I park in normal spots lol, I've found trying to park at the end of an empty parking lot away from everyone the dings seem to come worse then just parking by people lol. People are intrigued enough with the car that they take caution opening doors (may be where I live too).

Deep scratch on the lower-left of the screen on my 13" TB MBP. Fortunately (!), it's in a place that doesn't impede the display of stuff I use. For example, vids aren't affected, given their landscape orientation, it's within the same horizontal space as used by the Dock....

That's the only problem, however, and I am otherwise delighted with this machine. Still, when one pays $2884 for a 13" laptop, one should be able to depend on a product without defects of any kind, that has clearly gone through the most stringent quality control. Nada, to the latter for sure.

So Glad to find this thread and I'm not the only one who got a factory scratched MBP! I just unboxed my BTO 15" MBP touchbar 2.7 i7, and it had a scratch on the right side almost exactly the same as described here. I am really disappointed in Apple (and I'm a fanboy). Waited 4 weeks 5 days for this custom build MacBook Pro to deliver to Delaware Christiana Apple, and I drove 2 hours to save on tax for this order. I called Apple and they only offered "return for replacement" or refund which sucks because I would have to wait another couple weeks and possibly drive to Delaware again to pick it up. I might just return it and give up until next year's refresh/price drop. Sheesh and I happened to record an unboxing video because I was so excited to open it. Apple sent me an email regarding replacement MBP:

Pick up: ** Jan, 2017
We'll email you when your order is ready for pickup at the Apple Store.
If you prefer, you can cancel your order prior to the pick up date. For

WT*?!#!! Maybe their factory is addressing the graphics issues and scuffing machine.

Mine has it as well on the right speaker. It's pretty much unnoticeable on the silver, so unless I have other issues it's staying.

Ordered on October 28 / delivered on November 26
MacBook Pro (Space Gray) had chip mark mark under by the hinge and a scratch near the speaker.

Requested for a replacement on November 27
Replacement shipped out on December 13, picked up on the December 16 via FedEx

Replacement had zero scratches/chip and was already updated to OS X 10.12.2.
So far everything has been running good with no issues, gonna test out the battery tomorrow.

My first 15" had a chip mark on the top left corner (when closed).

Replaced it the next day and unboxed it in store this time: chip mark on the left air intake. But I couldn't replace it as it was the last one in stock. At home I noticed the CapsLock key was missing its pressure point and the charging cable made weird scratchy noises when inserted.

Four days ago was the first time the 15" was in stock again in the store near me. This time it's almost flawless, there's just a little indent at the bottom of my R-key. However I'm just going to live with that because I know how much worse I can be off by getting another replacement.

I cannot fathom why those of you with scratches on your screens have chosen to keep the units. They are faulty units beyond mere aesthetic imperfections as the screen scratches will interfere with your viewing experience. Imagine watching a movie with the scratch - surely it's distracting?

I'm noting a trend of people not wanting to swap their units because -

A) They are worried the replacement units would have more problems;
B) They don't want to wait for a new unit - usually BTOs;
C) The satisfaction derived from just having a new MBP supercedes any issues short of complete failure.

You're all far more forgiving than me that's for sure!

IMG_3103.JPG Same here. Also got my replacement today. Same scratch near the right speaker hole as the first one :(

Calling the after sales earlier this day, wasn't helpful. The only way is sending back this one and wait a couple of weeks again.

For the moment, i don't know what i should do.

My 2013 13" rMBP came with a small ding by one of the USB ports. It was a BTO (16GB) and so would have meant a wait for a replacement.

I called to register the fault, more to cover problems down the road in case it was caused by an impact. And they offered some money off without any prompting. Surprised no one here has been offered the same.

Perhaps they've changed policy. Or they're worried about moral hazard. In my case I had several other purchases without complaint, which may have persuaded them I wasn't a chancer. Or maybe I was just lucky (to be offered something, not to receive a blemished laptop :) ).

In any case, if it's any comfort, you soon get over it. 3 years on I'd completely forgotten about it until reading this thread.

This stuff is crazy. Still, I wonder why these scratches are only documented in MacRumors forum posts. I can't find any other people talking about that, anywhere (and my Google skills aren't that poor).

Any clue on how frequent/rare this is? My MBP was scratch-free, but I'm now waiting for a replacement. Let's hope the new one won't be scratched!

Seriously? You can barely see it... In my opinion it looks minor and superficial to me. Is this going to be a desktop queen? It's portable, no mag safe. It's going to get dinged.

I have always been fascinated with this sort of phenomena. Any imperfections found when receiving something new turns people into OCD fanatics. I have come across the same thing in the guitar world. Any blemish or imperfection and they send it back.

They get a new unblemished one and a week later scratch it with a ring or a watch while pulling it out of a bag or backpack. Right back where you started. Do you guys sell off those ones too? Let me know If a scratch is too much to bear, I'd pay you $300 less than retail for a "used" laptop.

It WILL get scratched no way around it.

If you are debating sending it back because of the time you would have to wait for a replacement, that tells me the scratch is not that big a deal. I say keep it and continue with your work.

LOL when you are paying a (premium) for something you expect premium quality which includes flawless delivering.

If you are happy with less that's your own fault but for sure not a reason to act with a somewhat holier than you attitude.

Shipping a new MBP with scratches to a customer who paid a lot of money for the "apple wellness factor" is a no go by all means. I brought mine back to the local Apple Store and was offered to keep it until the replacement has arrived.

Btw: I sell my MacBooks after a max of 2 years and only caused a tiny scratch on one edge for one time until I sold it.
My devices are definitely not getting bumped over time anyway (not just the MBP)

I got three iPad Air 2 replacements. Still, the screens sucks.
I filed a complaint to the consumer council and get my refund.

This is Apple Quality Control nowadays.

I knew the cost thing was going to be the issue.

A small scratch like that is not settling for less. It is a small scratch. You will get more with time. It's portable! If you take it with you and put it on a table, pick it up, move it around, stick it in a bag, it will get scratched. The premium price I assume is for the features, design, and hardware, not a small barely noticeable thing like that. Crazy.

I'm beginning to think the premium price we are paying for "flawless", is actually built in to cover the cost of reselling all these returned "damaged" laptops....
