This has nothing to do with OCD.

If you buy a premium product you can expect that it's not scratched out of the box. If you go and buy a brand new BMW you would expect a perfect product, too. Yes, both the BMW and the MBP probably WILL get scratched at some point and that's OK but the customer should expect a scratch-free product.

I'm getting my second replacement on the 30th. If it still has the scratch I have no problem waiting for another one. I guess the scratches have been caused by a faulty machine in the assembly process and QC didn't discover it. Maybe it has already been fixed and the ones from now will be OK like one should expect.

I have a small spec on the right side to the right of my track pad. its hard to notice. It looks more like it has to do with the finish. I was thinking about calling to try and get a gift card or replacement. everything else seems fine tho. I will see in a few days.

Probably less noticeable on silver, but I wouldn't want my new silver computer to come with a scratch either. You ought to be able to get the color you want without a scratch right out of the box.

And for those who think you ought to just keep it and live with it because it's going to get all scratched up anyway - not all laptops get scratched up or dented. None of mine ever have. And if they do get scratches and dents it is much more likely to happen on the outer surface when put down on something rough, dropped or put in a backpack. Scratches on the inside, unlike those on the outside, will be seen every time you use the computer and for some that will be bothersome.

It is less noticable on silver but is also less likely to get scratches as well.

Hey guys,

Been following this post for a couple days now. Same thing happened to me. Scratch under the right speaker grill BTO (15' 2.7 ghz/512/460). At first I was going to exchange it, but I didn't want to wait another 3 weeks.

Decided to return my BTO one and pick up the higher end model in New Hampshire since they had it in stock (Radeon 455) and save on tax. Customer service rep was nice enough to give me a $45 off $300 coupon that I plan on using for the 5k display.

And yes, the new one I picked up had a scratch in the same area lol. But at least its smaller than before...

Honestly where are you people's standards?!

You have got to be kidding me accepting this flaw?!

If you're wife told you she was a virgin but it turns out she's not would you 'get over it'?!
She still loves you the same right?! She still functions the same!

If you were buying this as a gift for someone would you tell them to accept the flaw?
Would you tell them to 'get over it, it's barely noticeable'?!

And the 'professionals' here are even more laughable.
If I was looking to hire someone and they accepted a flaw in their tool just because it would take longer to get a perfect one I wouldn't even think about hiring you. If you don't care about your stuff how can I trust you to care about mine?! What happened to the laptop you had before?
Poor excuses.

All I see here is people wanting instant (un)gratification.

It's not about cosmetics!

It's about principle and standards!
But the people in this thread don't have any...

The worst thing is? You guys are lowering the bar for Apple.
You're making it OK for them to slack. What about others?
Because if you all start to accept them but only a few people with a modicum of standards refuse.
How strong will they stand in their case?

Absolutely despicable.

As some who has owned a lot of BMWs (own 3 now) I don't think I have ever had one what did not have some sort of issue. My 2016 had what looked like wax melted on the rear bumper. But since it took 3+ months to get the vehicle I accepted the car and the dealer more or less got it off. But, I can still see it if look at the finish at the right angle in bright sunlight. And it does not effect the operation of the car, which is near perfect.

You are assuming they are like you. Most people would not even notice it.

Relax. Out of all the hundreds of thousands of MacBooks they will sell, a few will have a scratch and some will choose to ignore it. Hardly enough to give Apple the green light to lower production standards. Your reaction to these comments is overblown just like the reactions to a small scratch. What is despicable is how over the top picky some of you guys are.

I think part of the high cost comes from a small finicky crowd that will return a perfectly fine laptop and force Apple to sell it as refurbished or used at a loss. Absolutely despicable.

Would love to be in the room when you guys get your first scratch or ding. I am sure a temper tantrum will follow and stomping of the feet.

BTW, you analogy to a virgin wife is just plain silly. It has absolutely no relation to a laptop. Unless of course you value your laptop more than your wife.

Not notice it?! There's no way anyone wouldn't notice that scratch unless they're visually impaired...

And it's not about the person receiving the gift.

My question was would you tell someone you're gifting this to to accept this flaw? It's about you! Your personal standards! Because if you wouldn't want to gift it to someone else like this for the price you payed why are you holding yourself to a lower standard?!

Would you resell it for full price like this? If not, why not?

My analogy about the wife is not plain silly. It's an exaggeration for sure.

The point is:
- Did you sign up for that scratch?
- Do you want it there?
- Is it supposed to be there?
- Is this what you considered the best?

If all these answers are no then why are you keeping it?

It's a compromise. A compromise on standards.

I'm not being picky.

You're being easy.
I only require what they promised.
I didn't see any scratches on the slides or product pictures.
How dare you even call people picky for this.

So now the costumer is the problem?! Is it not Apple who is responsible for their own mess in the first place?

Do you realise how out of your mind you are for the crazy mental hoops you jump through to rationalise this?!

This is entirely fair and the standard that all companies, not just Apple, should be held to.

Based on your reply I realized we look at things differently. Your four point rebuttal demonstrates that you are only focusing on the scratch. The scratch is all you see. You open the box, see a scratch and that's it. No matter how minor, you can't get past it. If you choose to accept the scratch as you say "It's a compromise. A compromise on standards". I respect your decision, but don't agree with it.

I am not being easy. I will notice the scratch, and depending on how severe it is, I would either return the item or go about my business. Based on the photo provided here, I feel this particular scratch is minor. There was another post about a speck on a trackpad. Again so minor you could barely see it. Not enough for me to obsess over it. I buy laptops to do work not put on display or admire because it is flawless. A laptop is portable and will most likely get scratched or dinged. I have never seen a laptop that did not have some sort of wear from setting it down and picking it up.

I respect your point of view. Thank you for attempting to correct my crazy mental attempt to rationalize this.

did ur replacement arrive?

It will arrive next week on the 27th. If the replacement is not going to be OK I'll return the MBP and get buy a new one from the store because at least here in Frankfurt they have them in store now. So I can just pick one, check it up front in the store and don't have the hassle with UPS pickup, return and waiting again.

Every Apple employee I've spoken to apologized about the inconvinience and there was not a single word about the scratch being not so bad or that I should accept it. Instead they actually encouraged me to get a replacement saying that the scratch was not acceptable by Apple's standard and they were truly sorry for this.

So even Apple doesn't dispute the fact it's a flaw that shouldn't be there but some of you guys make a fuss about OCD and us being finicky? Give me a break..

I would do the same.

Mines preparing for shipment. If it arrives with even the slightest scratch, it's going straight back and I will keep doing the same until either I'm happy or I give it up as a bad job and cancel the order...

Hopefully all these scratched laptops will help encourage Apple to improve their quality control.

Similar story with my 13'' - ding right on the chamfered edge, making it visible from 2 angles :(

As I've opened it, there were some sort of crumbles under the plastic film, just so I'll know what to expect :)

Got it on Ebay (no receipt) so guess I'll have to live with it.

So Apple's poor craftsmanship convinced you to buy a higher priced model? lol. Cook is a legit BOSS.
