Ok, for those following:

1. I've installed 2Gb RAM and the Fan Control Software running at minimum of 2200 which at around 50C is below the apple setup, so the factory setup takes over and they spin at around 2300... However, with the 2GB of RAM the computer runs much cooler and the fan is less intrusive. Iddling in the low 40s, with couple programs - low 50s. Parallels and couple Rosetta applications pushes it to 60 which is still reasonable. Still, this computer is not the most quiet that I have seen, but still reasonable...

2. I figured out why this computers are so heavy - 5.1 lbs is not a light laptop... In fact all the competition is in the low 4lbs range... This laptop has a really heavy battery... I swear, the battery size is more than half the weight... Without the battery it was really light.

Question - does anybody make a battery cover so I can just take the battery out when I don't need it. I usually try to find a plug, and have one most of the time. I need the laptop for shutling in between work and home mainly - and in both places I plug into the wall... So - anybody makes a cover?

3. Hard Drive is extraordinarily easy to replace... Once you took off the battery and removed the three tiny screws, it pulls right out... Brilliant... And perhaps very handy down the road...

You're right for #1, it is not quiet. I just tried MB with the lowest settings and throughout the gameplay, fans were noisy at high speed (around 6200RPM) and hovering around 65C but it's fine by me as long as it doesn't shut down. #2 is correct but 5.1lbs is 'acceptable'. Don't know about the battery cover, but it's a good idea for someone to invent this. For #3, don't forget the 4 Torx T8 screws on the hard drive itself, they're hard to come by at regular hardware stores (around where I live that is).

Whoa, that's fast. I'm in BC and mine hasn't even shipped yet. I ordered mine on the 8th and changed my mind about the RAM and upgraded it from 1GB to 2GB the on 9th (early morning). Mine has a shipping date of Nov. 14 - 16 and a delivery date of Nov. 27 - Dec 5.

Did you order it over the phone or online? I had some questions so I called them and the guy said it would be faster if I did it over the phone, but I wanted to get Airmiles, etc from this purchase so I had to do it over the internet...

Did you pay extra for the faster shipping?

noisy CD drive

i just got my black C2d macbook and whenever i put a disk in.. its keeps making a noise as if it is ripping the disk,... it plays it but is there a major problem:(:(

I got my stock black macbook on saturday. Spent the entire day migrating my photos and songs onto it. The computer was great for the first day... though there was notable ilife software instability, as iphoto and itunes would frequently shut themselves off (like once an hour or so, with one instance where iphoto closed itself 3 times in one hour while I was rotating photos).

But now today I can't get the computer to work for more than 5-10 minutes before it gets ****ed up. 4 times a window came up telling me I had to hold the power button and restart the machine. (I was running safari on the apple website looking for widgets all 4 times) 5th time I was on movies.com with no other programs running and the screen froze up and got these corrupted lines across the display and made this continuous pinging sound until I shut the thing down. Now when I jus tried to turn it back on I could hear what I think is the CD drive trying to work consistantly every 1.5 seconds for about 4 minutes, when it stopped.

Now I am going to try turning it on again and see what happens.

LEMON!

Edit: when I try to turn it on, before anything else happens the CD drive makes noise.

Edit: Up 10 minutes... fairly smooth so far... though Safari has closed itself twice and now is refusing to load... Oh, safari loaded... but closed iTunes... then safari closed again. BTW I am writing this problem free on my 3 year old HP P4 while my macbook is refusing to work properly in my lap. If I wasn't leaving the country tomorrow I would return this and get a sony...

Edit: Safari refuses to run... It will almost finish loading the apple default website when it closes and I get the message... Oh great now the computer froze up, got red streaks all across the screen and is making a horrible pinging sound... my ears are going to bleed soon... And I wanted a mac so bad...

Edit: now it won't turn on.

Week 45 out of China, FYI

Edit: its not heat. I let it sit for a half hour and it took me half a dozen attempts to get it to turn on...

Edit: did it again. Played music with no problems for 10 minutes then it started its red lined seizures. Turned back on again quickly this time.

This is why when I get my MacBook (Which shipped today!!) I'm going to format and reinstall os x.

Er, would that help me in my current situation at all? I am currently planning on going back to the store I bought it from in the morning and demanding I get a replacement because mine does not function properly. Furthermore, I am going to demand that they port all of my music and photos from the old one to the new one. :)

Departed!!!

Nope.

That sound like a very good idea. Seems like you have a defective one so it should be either repaired or replaced.

Furthermore, I am going to demand that they port all of my music and photos from the old one to the new one. :)

They won't do that. So back it up before taking it to the store.

Fortunately, I have all my music on another computer as well. Its more of a time issue, as I am supposed to be AT the airport by 3 tomorrow... My photos are scattered all over hell on 3 different computers and number of cds. All in all I did about 40 gigs of porting to the laptop... damnit. I am trying to get the photos off of it, but it is so hard to run... the thing just shut down on me again a minute ago and I couldnt get it to turn on again...

Maybe I SHOULD get a Sony :)

Hi,

I got my MacBook C2D this past Saturday, from an Apple store. It's a standard Black one, 2Ghz, 120GB hard drive. Anyways, someone earlier mentioned loud fans.... YES mine has the same issue. It idles at a temp of 60 C and has a small amount of fan noise, but, if I do anything that puts moderate load on the cpu, the fan gets pretty noisy (and temperatures hit about 80 C). In fact, I'd say that it is so noisy that it would attract attention in a quiet library, and is noticeable even 15-20 feet away. I also don't know if this is normal or not for MacBooks, and would like to hear other peoples' experiences, as it is loud enough to really bother me.... I have 12 more days to decide whether to return it or not!

Situations so far that kick in the fans loudly are:
* playing a video podcast (1.5mbits/sec encoding rate, pushed cpu to 66%)
* installing XCode
* importing about 50 pictures into iPhoto from my camera
* running CineBench or super_pi
To put load on your CPU, you can open up the command terminal (bash shell) and run these commands (2 of the same command because the C2D has 2 cpus):
yes > /dev/null&
yes > /dev/null&

I can say definitively that this is by far the loudest laptop computer I have ever used. I ran some heavy benchmarks on my Thinkpad T42 sitting right next to my Macbook and the fan was very quiet by comparison, even though the Thinkpad CPU was totally maxxed out. I also have used many other laptops in the past and fan noise has never been this loud.

By the way, I'm blogging about my experiences, you can read my review of the MacBook C2D at topicpoint.com

I've really put my MB C2D through it's paces - and I've none of that...perhaps you should take it back? Mine is super cool and quiet....

You should call apple and ask for a refund on the faster shipping charge. I didn't choose it and I'm on the same plane as you.

This sounds like something major, such as bad RAM. Definitely bring it in.

So all the extra parts that I've ordered (Printer within the promo deal, Apple keyboard, Monterstudio adapter cable for my guitar, Incase sleeve), have been shipped via Flextronic Logistics while it just says "merge in transit" for the Macbook? What does that mean? Probably just that the parts are coming from different places in the world, but I'm pretty much in doubt as to whether the computer has even left China yet? I'd wish I could've selected fast shipping, but apparently that isn't an option when shipping to Denmark...

arrived!

Nov. 8th - ordered black macbook w/ 200gb HD and 2 gb RAM

estimated delivery was between the 15th-20th

Arrived today, November 14th. Not too bad. :D

It's charging now so will see if there are any problems later tonite.

I got my C2D MacBook last Wednesday. It has been wonderful since I received it. No whine, no moo, heat isn't bad, fans are kinda loud under load but I don't mind, screen is great (YAY!). I took it on a trip to New York this weekend and the battery lasted the entire 2 hour flight with over 40% charge left (had the screen on maximum brightness). I was watching downloaded episodes of Diggnation for the entire flight haha.

I took a picture right after I unpacked it and was reloading the OS.

Darn you MB owners and your screens that have even brightness.
