Screen Issues

Well, I just received my 2.33Ghz C2D Matte Screen today from Mac Mall that I had overnighted. I previously owned a 17" CD MacBook Pro, but I sold as soon as I heard that the C2D processors were coming out.

As I waited for the C2D to "mature" a little, I researched and found all of the threads about the various problems. The one that scared me the most was the grainy screen as I do lots of Photoshop work.

I have seen first hand the bad end of the "grainy" spectrum on a 2.33Ghz C2D laptop on display in a Comp USA here in Long Island, NY. Sitting right next to it was a 2.16Ghz C2D that looked great however. So, I made up my mind that it would be "pot luck" as to which screen I got.

So the good news is my new MBP C2D 2.33ghz screen looks great. There is a VERY minute amount of grain, but I'm confident that if I never came to these forums, I would have never noticed it. I showed the screen to my brother who is also an avid Mac user and had no knowledge of the grain issue, and he said the screen looks great. "Very bright and crisp" were his exact words.

My machine is a week 44 baby and has the infamous 00009C60 Model screen.

I must also say that the dark shadowing is very minimal on it as well.

I think it's just going to be a case of good or bad luck. I agree though that this should NOT be the case on a $2500 piece of gear.

Good luck to all in their MBP C2D acquisition endeavors.

oh well...

Alas, my scenario #2 played out. Both Fedex home delivery (the printer and other small stuff) and FedEx Express (the computer) delivered while I was still at work. The heartbreaker is that the computer was only brought by a mere hour before my arrival home. Interestingly enough, scenario #3 is no longer an issue since my patient went into labor this morning and I delivered her son at noon. Damn didactics! Oh well, I can pick it up tonight after 6 pm...the same time as our recruitment dinner (let's see...yep I can do it!). Hmmm...free yummy food or looking and admiring my new computer. Tough choice!

If only our program had mailboxes for us...then i would be typing this on a new computer since someone is always available for deliveries at our hospital!

A "good" 9C60 screen?

Not to get involved in personal flame wars but I finally got a hold of a digital camera and took a few (very quick) shots of what I consider to be a good 9C60 screen. If you see a flaw I don't, fine...but I still look at it every day and am very pleased, so here you go:

What I see everyday (ie, not just a gray screen):

Light gray screen:

Darker gray screen:

Hope that helps....

having some fun

well, I picked it up and after having fun at our recruitment dinner, I've been playing with it for a few minutes. I have th 9C60 screen and I guess if I look really close it has the grain/shimmer thing people complain of but at normal usage distance for me, I don't see much that would give me a migraine. So I put on my glasses, just to be sure. It seems to be evenly lit, and depending on my viewing angle, I can make any portion look darker. I guess I should be blessed that either my screen doesn't have major graininess or that I don't have razor sharp vision that would make a little grain intolerable.
I had fun with the backlit keyboard thing...I didn't have that on this old powerbook.
I think I'll just work on tweaking the dock items and preferences then do the major installations and transitions over the weekend. I'm still waiting on the keyboard protector but hopefully that comes tomorrow. Oh the fun to be had!

Now to find out what my password is for this site...that's the problem with using the "stay logged in" function of websites...i forget the passwords.

Yup definitely not as bad as mine was, the bottom even looks pretty evenly lit, mind you its hard to tell just from a photo. Grain? I cant see from the photo.

Thanks for the pictures Daverinfl.

It even beats my G5 in the Sculpture Test for logic pro 7.2.... Now if I could only get enough money to buy a Mac Pro.

..and my MBP 15-inch is on it's way back because if the poor screen quality. I could get a replacement but I would most likely get the same screen model and rather get my money refunded and wait for a screen update.

MBP 17" C2Duo First Impressions

My first impressions after two hrs of use...

Glossy Screen: really like it. No uneven backlighting.

160gb Hitachi Drive: whisper quiet

Heat: runs cooler than my PB G4. Never heard fans come on even when downloading 40mb file and streaming video.

Build quality: no issues. Everything appears tight

well i'm ready to switch banks after this purchase finally goes through. They completely disrupted the shipment of my macbook pro. My bank said that it has a limit of $1500 a day, and i finally recieved an email stating that my bank didn't authorize my payment 4 days after making that purchase. I'm so pissed, and i was looking forward to using my macbook pro over the thanksgiving holidays, well that's not looking so good anymore. Before it should have shipped by yesterday and would get here no later than 23Nov, now the Estimated shipping time is 27-29 November and estimated arrival of 29-dec. 6. they said it will be shipped by tomorrow because they manually charged me $1500 today and the rest tomorrow.

Just needed to vent, at least i'm not yet complaining of a grainy unevenly backlit display, (which could make things worse)

My 4200 Feels excellent. I'm primarily judging by opening applications for the first time in a while, or after a restart, assuring they're not in RAM. Photoshop and Word are particularly a huge improvement over the 4200 in my old PowerBook G4 1.25. On reopens, which I assume are primarily from RAM, my photoshop goes from click on dock to fully open and ready in 10.5 seconds.

The formatted capacity is 186.3gb. I've also decided give 16gb to Boot Camp, so the total capacity of my OS X Partition is 170gb.

Anything particular you want tested/timed?

-Matt

Hi MAcNIAC,

Did you order the 15 or the 17? I am leaning towards the 17, but would still consider the 15, especially because of the extra portability. I did see one 15 (2.33), but it had a terrible screen (looked like dust or maybe mould under the screen, just left of centre, plus quite uneven) so was a bit put off by that.

Interestingly, the display model was a 2.16 which had an amazing screen, total even, really bright and crisp. They were both matte, so it wasn't a matte/glossy issue.

I've got the 15" 2.33 with glossy screen, it's an upgrade from a 12" ibook for me so the screen (and resolution) seems enormous!

my first MBP (also glossy) was grainy - i think it's pot luck, a bit dissapointing given the price of these things.

OK... I have had my MacBook Pro for over 3 weeks now and I love it.

-My battery lasts for about 3 hours (I use my MBP mainly for photoediting)

-The SuperDrive is wisper quiet

-The Core 2 Duo processor is very fast, but when working with high end programs (such as Photoshop, Aperture and Final Cut Pro) the fan gets a little noisy

-The Glossy screen looks AMAZING

-AND-

-The 200GB Toshiba PMR feels just as fast as the 5400 RPM HD in my old iBook G4 and the net size is 186.3GB
